Shortly after the illegal dumping story GerritsenBeach.net posed the question of the security of the gates. After all it was most likely how someone would be able to drive a vehicle with a dumpster back there. We were able to find out that the locks have not been changed for a good number of years and that there was no documentation of who had the keys at any given time.
GBCares changed the locks and then gave Parks the copies. Don’t worry this isn’t one of those story that knocks an organization. Parks is completely fine with this.

Well I am not fine with this. GB Cares let them dump wood chips all over the place. For all we know they let whoever dumped all that garbage in too. The only people who should have the keys to the gates is the Parks Department. Period. End of Story.

In an ideal world maybe I'd agree with you as to who Should have keys. During this fiscal crisis, realistically is the Parks Department going to be vigilant enough to know when those locks are cut off? Most City agencies are going to be increasingly dependant on community organizations to chip in (no pun intended) and help. This help is almost always going to be verbal for fear of lawsuits and such. As a taxpayer, and community member I’m all for it.

okay do today help the parks department, tomorrow when sanitation comes asking do you let them dump some trash or DEP some waste. We should not be bandaide for a city agency

Ok – let's not be a "bandaide" let's see how well the parks department cleans the place. Granted that the woodchip dump was a mistake, can someone please report how conditions were here Before GBcares did their cleaning? I'm too new to have witnessed the difference.

That ridiculous. It has been a construction dumping ground back there for at least 50 years. GB cares almost put an end to it with the gates being locked and with their presence back there. They need the keys to accomplish their goals as well as the Vollies to put out fires. Suggesting that they had anything to do with dumping construction debris back there is beyond stupid. You don't see the difference between woodchips and shingles?

Woodchips are trash? Funny how many bags of them are sold at home centers and garden supplies. Shingles and other construction debris are far, far more damaging environmentally than woodchips. I find it hard to believe that you see this as the same problem. Though the woodchips may have been misguided, it was done by a group that has done great things for the community. How do you compare that to unscrupulous contractors that charge money to homeowners for removal of debris and then dump it back there?

Ok, Bitchita. If you have a real problem with this, why don't you stop playing armchair quarterback and get involved with your community or are you too busy watching Ghost Hunters?

Dumping is dumping, whether it be shingles, household trash, construction materials or wood chips and guess what its all illegal. Home centers also sell shingles and household appliances what the hell does that have to do with anything
BTW – did the parks depart ever issue any summons for the illegal dumping

GB Cares has preformed Herculean labors to make the fields, and the neighborhood, look better than ever before. That organization does more for this community and the fields than the Parks Dept ever will. Not no knock Parks but this is our neighborhood and noone will give the fields the TLC it needs better than our community. While other neighborhoods sit back and wait for the city to resuce their neglected landscapes GB Cares has taken ambitous steps to transform the fields into something to be proud of not embarrassed of. If keys are all they require to do so then so be it.
PD is right, dumping has been a blight of backweeds for decades. To make GB Cares a scape goat for all dumping is ignorant. If you have lived here long enough and spent any time back in the weeds you'd know that.
Lastly there is a HUGE difference between a natural biodegradable rescource like woodchips and factory produced asphalt shingles. If there wasn't you'd see bags of broken up shingles in the garden department at a home improvement store.

for who the people who come down here and leave their crap , dirty our Ave , rome throught our courts . The kids in Gerritsen beach can't use the fields but they send the garbage that they don't want in Marine park down here . and for your info there are so many wood chips there that the park dept couldn't plant any trees there . in this case there is very little difference between a natural biodegradable rescource like woodchips and factory produced asphalt shingles. the result is the same , nothing will grow there .

In a few years, when they break down, not only will trees grow there, but they will be healthier because there will be something more than sand to grow in. The reason that trees ( or anything else) can't grow in that now is because they generate tremendous heat as they break down. But aside from that, the woodchips as they decompose are releasing nothing harmful to the environment, whereas the shingles and vinyl siding, cement, etc. etc. are releasing all kinds of carcinogenic chemicals into the air, earth and water as they s-l-o-w-l-y break down. That you don't see a difference is amazing to me.

Thanks Tom, I was starting to think it was me….I think a big part of the problem here is that alot of people with alot to say on this subject are either new to GB or have short memories. If any one or any organization has 'before' photos of what the Ave looked like before Gerrittsen Cares, they should be posted. It's also important to remember that GB Cares did not stop at the Ave. How many cars were removed from back there? People need to remember that before there were gates there, we were the dumping ground for every joy- riding, insurance- jobbing car thief in Brooklyn. And then they were lit on fire. Think back to how bad it was. No matter what anyone thinks of anyone, egos and personnal feelings and ethical opinions aside, there is no denying that they have transformed the Ave. There is also no denying that groups from this neighborhood like the guys from the Cort Club, to the ones involved with the Little League, K of C, Kiddy Beach, many of whom are the same, overlapping group of people, work very hard and are owed a tremendous amount of gratitude from the residents of the Beach. Not to forget, Olga Marshall, G-d rest her soul, who quietly and without any ulterior motive made the Ave more beautiful for everyone. Thanks Olga, the bulbs and perrenials are growing and blooming and are a constant reminder of your goodness and humility.

Pd stick to the one subject . bring up the court club , Olga and other's in Gerritsen beach is an attempt to deter from the fact that It is illegal for GB cares or anyone to operate gas powered machinery in the fields to pull out theses cars you keep talking about , without written permission from the park dept . so unless there going to pull them out by hand there is no need for them to have keys .
