Hooray for Parks on this one folks.
With the Illegal Dumping story from a week back we have been trying to get any agency to answer a few questions and to get a response and cleanup.
After speaking with Mr. Lawrence Majors our “newish” Parks Manager, he is new to our park but came from Sheepshead/Brighton/Coney Parks area. He stated that GerritsenBeach.net’s pictures and coverage made them aware of the situation and they plan to remove the debris.
Although as of this time, they have not physically gone back-weeds to look, they are aware of what and how much debris is back there from the pictures. They are planning to “investigate” and remove the debris after the area drys out. They will go back there with a few front end loaders and containers to remove the debris.
The investigation goes like this: When they get back there, if they can find a consistent address in the debris, they may be able to issue a summons. However, if they investigate and the person moved they are out of luck. In terms of finding these disgusting people I think our chances are low.
As for the keys…There are approximately 5 Gates that lead back weeds(not including Burnett): Channel, Soccer Field, Gotham, Cryus, Seba. Park’s Manager Lawrence Major’s plans on changing the locks and keys ASAP and to change them every so often, they have not been changed in approximately 5 years. When asked about who is in possession of the keys, so this wont happen again, only the FDNY and Park he said are in possession. It must be noted that the Vollies and the members of the GBCares board also have keys to open these gates and they should be included when the locks/keys are changed out.
As soon as the Parks Press office returns our phone calls we will be putting up more information.
I believe the Airplane people have keys as well.

All the card carrying airplane members have keys, as also I believe the Little League.
What legitimate reason do members of GB Cares Board need keys for obsviously any clean up involves Parks.
Keys can be borrowed (wink) copied and returned. The fields and back weeds are City property and keys should be handled totally by them and not given to any civilian or private organization.

To Anonymous "and the Board of GB Cares also have Keys"…. I've been on the Board for years and never had a key. Who do you think bought the locks and replaces them when they are cut off, replaces the whole lot of them when security has been breached? "Obsviously(sic) any clean up involves Parks"…….where have you been? do you live here? The avenue never looked so good as when GB Cares clean up program was in full swing, ask your neighbors if you live here. You can thank this website and anonymites like yourself for the end of that pogram.

Actually blame the wood chip dump behind the school for the end of that program. You can be a staunch defender of an organization of a program that does a ton of good, but keeping the public trust is a tuff job, it means being consistent and not trying to dismiss or excuse a potentially dangerous mistake. I live here too, I know the good work done by GB Cares, but I very much appreciate being informed by this website of a potentially dangerous dump in the midst of school kids. I will not look the other way, especially when I’m being told to “move along, nothing to see here” by the persons involved instead of an “I’m sorry, won’t happen again”.

Ray first you say that you don't have keys then you imply that it was G. B. cares that changed the locks its obvious that if G. B. cares did change the locks then at one time they did have the keys . If someone wants to clean the ave all they need is a rake , shovel and garbage bags . not keys to locks that open up roads to the back weeds .

Parks did not lock down the Park. GB Cares sponsored that program and continues it. Parks, FDNY, Vollies, and other authorized people are given keys as necessary. Ray is correct. When locks are cut, destroyed or missing GB Cares is notified and takes care of it.

I don't know what your experience with Parks has been previously, but I can tell you that it's sure going to improve with Larry Majors around. We know him from his work in Brighton & Coney Island. He's top notch – a hard worker & a pro in every sense of the word.

Let's give Larry the benefit of the doubt. He has a tough row to hoe ahead of him. This is his chance to shine…succeed where all others have come up short, make GB proud of the parks dept.

It would be nice if parks/gb cares/anyone took care of the weeds past the skate park to the point. Whenever they do clean ups they just end there.
