Dog Barking in the Beach

funny pictures of dogs with captions

We have a lot of dogs in Gerritsen Beach, sometimes dozens per block. On a decent day you will see lots of dogs in their respective yards.

Which brings me to an issue I am hearing about more and more each day: Excessive dog barking.

It’s no problem for you when it’s your dog barking. If your dog’s barking interferes with your plans, you can bring him in the house or take other steps to quiet him.

When it’s your neighbor’s dog, it’s an altogether different story. When your neighbor’s dog fills your house with noise, it is you and not the dog that must make the accommodation. As odd as it sounds, it’s true; while you control your dog’s life inside your house, it is your neighbor’s dog that controls your life inside your house.

You can’t call over the fence and make arrangements with the dog when you want to take a nap. You can lay down and close your eyes, but you can’t sleep unless the neighbor’s dog is in the mood to let you sleep. You may be upset and need a quiet place to pull yourself together, but the dog will determine whether you deserve a quiet space.

You may decide you want to work out of your house instead of the office. But you can’t make an important business call with a dog barking in the background and you can’t get your work done when every room in your house sounds like ground zero of a kennel.

You can’t have friends over for a quiet dinner. Dinner perhaps, but a loud, chaotic dinner is not quite the same thing. You certainly can’t invite guests for an overnight visit and then situate them in a room where the neighbor’s dog makes sleep impossible. And God help you if you must endure an illness in a sick bed dominated by the endless tyranny of a barking dog.

What’s it worth to be able to sleep, nap, work, relax, concentrate, entertain and recuperate in your own home whenever you wish? What have you lost when an irresponsible neighbor takes that away from you?

Whew… I think you’re getting the point.

But here’s what you can do!

  • When the barking is unreasonable and plainly audible from within nearby residential properties and
    • after 7am and before 10pm for a continuous period of 10 minute; or
    • after 10pm and before 7am for a continuous period of 5 minutes or more.

You can either call 311 or Report noise from a barking dog online via 311 online.

Funny, I just saw a report on channel 2 news…in one town in NJ they are fining people whose dogs bark excessively. I know it makes me crazy when my own dog barks early in morning or late a night……we need Caesar Milan!!!!!

It's not appropriate for a person to let their dog pee on someone else's property no matter the size of the dog. Yank the leash when the dog tries it and get to a tree or a hydrant. Common sense and common courtsey folks.

I know this is about dog barking but a problem in this neighborhood is that many do not pick up after their dogs. Come on folks it doesn't take much. I hope its that parents have kids walk the dog as a chore and don't realize they're leaving dog crap in the middle of the sidewalk because any adult doing that should be fined.

I think its gross too! I clean up after my dog; but do you know what else is gross…..parents (or caregivers) letting children pee in the park!!! come on ….that's pretty gross too!

This actually bothers me less. When a little kid's gotta go, they gotta go. You can do your best to get somewhere but I'd rather save the kid the embarassement of peeing on himself. I can live with that more than some lazy SOB that doesn't pick up after their dog deposits smelly shit on the ground.

You know what takes the cake? The dog owners who pick up the poop in a plastic bag and then instead of walking it to a trash receptacle they just fling it in the road, on the grass in front of the fields or on the grass in the park. These morons think that they will avoid a ticket for not picking up the dog waste. Hey Moron, they will just give you a ticket for littering instead!!!!

I hope they catch the person(s) not picking up after their dogs on Cyrus between Canton and Abbey. Judging by the size of the poop they must be huge dogs. If I were the property owners there I'd have my camera at the ready.

I personally don't own a dog. And I know it can sometimes be annoying, but lets hear the song you sing when the dog is alerting you that someone is breaking into your house, or your car. Or perhaps beating the crap outta one of your kids. You have to take the good with the bad. This is the least of the problems in the neighborhood. Kids drinking and doing drugs. Stealing things out of peoples yards, just to mention a few. If the dog barking is annoying so many people…get together, hire a trainer, and learn how to control your animals!!

Theres a hell of a lot of people that DONT SHUT UP late at night. Id prefer a dog barking for 5 minutes at 3am than,"HEY! Fuck you, fuck this fuck that" etc etc. Not to mention what usually wakes me up, a car flying down my block at 70 miles per hour blasting the wonderful clicks and whistles of the jungle rhythm.

the dogs are usually barking at the people who are not supposed to be there hanging out in front of your house.

hang out in front of your own house or your parents. dont be a rat and call 311 on your neighbors.

I agree with gb chickie, can someone address the dog droppings situation?? What can we do when someone doesn't curb their dog? It's disgusting! I was up at Seba PArk and someone let their dog poop inside the park!!!!!!!!

I love the people who live in the house on the corner of Celeste and Channel. Instead of picking up the crap in their yard, they push the crap under the fence and out of their yard by using their hose. They have a few big dogs, so its not just one or two turds on the sidewalk. I think this summer I am going to clean up after them by hurling it back into their yard. I hope some of it lands in their ground level pool.

That's gross and extremely inconsiderate (not on your part, on theirs). If you can't properly care for your pets then you shouldn't have them in the first place.

Weii, I for one can't wait to call 311. I had it with these inconsiderate people who let their dogs bark all day long. I'm not talking about once in awhile, its everyday and at the same exact time I want to take a nap.

You should hear the dogs on Stuart Street between Ave V and Ave U. I live on Burnett and we hear them all day and night.

Call 311, why are u putting up with that all day and all night? Maybe someone is neglecting the dog/s by leaving them chained outside alone all day. CALL.
