[This car had its GPS stolen from the glove box]
We’ve been getting emails and message about numerous car break-ins on Aster court.
They have been stealing anything they can see.
It’s been every weekend for the last three weekends. The thieves are going into cars via open windows, unlocked doors, etc. Apparently one of the first weekends of this spree, a 12 year old was caught red handed in someones vehicle and was given “a good talking to”.

They have also been breaking into cars in the old section!

Oh the humanities!!!! If you post the 12 year old’s name you will upset his fine upstanding family. You know they don’t deserve to be dragged through the mud for something that their child did in a momentary lack of good judgment. And besides it is all the faults of the people who did not lock their car doors. It became a overwhelming temptation for the child. How could he possibly resist. After all he is only 12.

Yeah like someone’s going to post the name of a 12 yr old hell people went crazy when an adult’s name was posted when they arrested for drugs on the avenue saying how misguided and understood he was and what a great family he came from and how his family tried and shouldn’t be dragged down. News flash, their family raised them and obsviously didn’t teach them the rights and wrongs whether it was because they didn’t know how to or because they themselves were pos growing up.
Time to wake up, the children don’t run the community nor do the prisoners run the jails or the patients the hospitals. If these lovely’s need help then mommy and or daddy need to get them to those hospitals and if they don’t then maybe they need to share a dorm with a few inmates on the Island.

How can you actually blame the victim? I only moved here 2 years ago and it feels like such a safe place to live. It is upsetting to think I will be blamed when something is taken out of my car just because I may have forgotten to lock my door.

It doesn’t surprise me that a young local was caught in one car break-in incident -he’s probably already a bing drinker. There were a group of no less than 25 under-aged teens and pre-teens drinking beers and smoking pot out in the open last night in Gerritsen. I swear none of them looked any older than 16 or 17. The cops were called and they started scattering, leaving garbage behind and running away tossing beers into private property.
In an earlier article someone posted that the car thief was probably one of the young pot heads inconsiderate enough to smoke and drink in front of other’s property and even leave their emptied blunts and beers in the street. A reply said that it probably was not ‘dopey potheads’. Well, here’s a young 12 year old already breaking into cars. From what I witnessed last night it, sadly would not surprise me if he’s already a dopey pothead.
Given the number of kids involved I’d say the way to curb public drinking and smoking, as well as other of our neigborhood crimes, is for GB neighbors to care about the quality of their own community and get involved. Don’t tolerate young groups gathered in front of your property breaking the law with their drinking and smoking – call the cops; let these punk teens and pre-teens see you come out and complain and care, take pictures and video for posting for police to take action and parents to be ashamed about when they see their own up on sites like this (I regret not having the presence of mind to do so last night), talk to the parents you know.
My point is that tolerance of this underage drinking, especially out in the open, is only going to lead to more problems like the robberies and vandalism we’re seeing now.

The lazy parents do not care. As long as their little darlings are out of their faces and not bothering them, they don’t care where they are or what they are doing. The parents are probably home drinking themselves! I think photos should be taken and posted so the parents are help accountable for their childrens actions.

Maybe one of the problems with teen drinking is who is selling to them. I really doubt that the are purchasing beer in another neighborhood and bringing it back here to drink. We were all teenagers at one time and most of us did our share of beer drinking on the weekends, but it just seems that these kids have no problem obtaining beer. By the way, I have a teenage son and do not allow him to drink at home and do not condone his getting drunk, but honestly it has happened more than once.

Appreciate the honesty about having a teen that does this on occasion, I know it’s not easy to handle.
I think Police can send people to test that stores require IDs or revoke licenses. Maybe we can have them step up those efforts here in the neighborhood. When adults realize that teens are taking away the convenience of walking to the corner store for beer, they might pay a little more attention to the matter. It’s a small step but I think we need many incremental steps.
We’d also need for older bothers and sister who’ve done the same to step up and not purchase this alcohol for their younger brothers or sisters. They can at least advise them on some old school respect for community by not blatantly drinking in the streets. I don’t condone under aged drinking at all but there are more discreet ways of drink than going down any of the courts and disturbing neighbors. Drinking and smoking in the Courts or Avenues (I don’t care how secluded they think it is) is just lack of common sense and courtesy.

If your 15 year old was out last night (Saturday) after 9pm then the chances are he/she was getting drunk. ASK where your kids are going and who with, then place a call while they’re out. The next day ASK about where they were and who they were with and what they were doing. Get close enough to your kid when they get home to notice alcohol on the breath or marijuana smoke on their clothes just in case. PUNISH them by a good old fashion ass kicking then take away the things they care about. With no TV, phone, texting, internet, iPod – and sitting in a room with nothing to do for a week or two, they’ll think twice about doing it again. Mabye they’ll stick with a soda next time. It may save your child’s life in the end. Even if your child wasn’t actually drinking, he/she may end up with a criminal record for getting caught with the bunch. Get involved folks. This is a good neighborhood despite the young punks, as parents and neighbors let’s do our small part to make a difference.

I respect what your saying , but I don’t think it would work in the real word . most parents if not all know what they have to do . Some just don’t do it . some do and you can see it in the way their children behave . some can’t because they a two income family and sorry to say there just isn’t any time and yes I know that’s not fair to anyone . some don’t care . This is what they did as kids and as long as it doesn’t interfere with dads drinking or mom’s pill popping its alright with them . some are just in denial .They come from a good family and would do it . case in point I asked a friend what would you do if someone said your kid was selling drugs . her answer was they would have to tell me to my face in front of my son , They would have to admit to their parents that they do drugs . and then I still would listen to them because they admitted to being a drug addict .

Two income families have been a fact of ‘real’ life for a long time now in this country. I work, my wife works – my daughter is subject to the things suggested above. That there’s ‘no time’ is a sorry excuse. I hear what you’re saying – parents just don’t care or CLAIM they don’t have time. Well, in that case, then it’s a matter of law enforcement.
When those same parents have to MAKE the time to go to the precient, some might begin to CARE and then start the very little time consuming measures suggested above.
One other thing… Although I know the publisher of this site is not a fan of police stop and frisk policy [frankly neither am I] , the reality is that it was a fact of life for half a million New Yorkers last year already. While it should be done with caution and under the right circumstances, the teens and pre-teens in this neighborhood with care-less and time deprived (i.e irresponsible) parents might think twice with a little extra policing and vigilant neigbhors.

OMG, Ass Kicking Anonymous is at it again.
Were you in your 50s when you were born? The only thing you, or any parent, would accomplish by physically abusing a child in that fashion would be to increase the anger they feel towards you and further push that child into a depressive state that many teenagers find themselves in today. Given the problems they have with school, peer pressure, drugs and everything else going on in their life, they must be made to understand at a very young age that YOU, the parent, are their first phone call when they find themselves in situations that they can’t handle. They need to know and trust that you will be
non-judgmental when you come to pick them up and get them out of harm’s way regardless of what the circumstances are. The next day, when the situation is diffused, is the time for a calm and deliberate discussion. If that doesn’t work, you can always take them down to Atlantic Ave. Holding Center and show them where all the cool teenagers go to spend their summer vacations.

Maybe you’re right trainman, maybe you’re right about the ass kicking. However, speaking from my own experience, I know I always feared my father’s open hand slap. Rarely ever administered, the threat of it alone (from his big working hands) put my butt in check before I did anything as stupid as smoke marijuana and drink alcohol out in the open in front of someone else’s home like a delinquent. You’re one of those that feels all physical punishment is ‘abuse’, I respect that. I also respect your suggestion about the trip to the holding center. Lastly, again, I must say that I also respect the open hand slap.

Ass kicking is miles apart from an open hand slap and I certainly respect your decision also. And yes my wisdom came about from many years of experience and decisions, some of which I wish I could’ve taken back.
I often remark that you can go to an appliance store and buy a toaster and it comes with 20 pages of instructions; yet when you pick up your newborn at the hospital, it comes with an extra bottle of formula, a smile and a WISH for good luck!

Lately there’s been a lot of concern over what’s going on with the teenagers in Gerritsen beach . not just on this blog but others , some parents have come up with different idea on what to do on a individual bases but what can be done on a larger scale to reach some of these kids who parents have maybe tried but failed . since it seams to be a community problem , I’d like to know what George and the G.B.P.O think about it and if they could come up with some ideas

Here’s an idea for those parents who say they can’t control or lost control of their little darlings, it’s called a PINS Petition, Person In Need of Supervision. They are issued in Family Court and believe it or nor there are cases where you can petition for a 17 year old. Basically, the kid don’t follow the rules they get dragged down to Family Court the first and maybe second time they get conselling with the parents, keep doing it and stressing mommy they get a new temporary residence.
The wealthy are known for getting these petitions when their darlings on going down the wrong track to cover their own ass against civil liability should the darling do something.
Just a last thought or question, who the hell is running your house if you can’t control YOUR OWN

Let me tell you something. This is not a new problem. Two years ago I forgot to lock my car door one night and someone rifled though my car. There was nothing in my car worth stealing. However, they took a pair of prescription eyeglasses. Useless to anyone but me.
One year ago my husband forgot to lock his car. They took the faceplate for his radio. Possibly useful to someone else.
Also one year ago my daughter forgot to lock her car. They rifled though her car and found nothing of use.
We live in the general vicinity of this Aster Court break-in. This problem has been going on for a lot longer than everyone thinks.

I agree there should be a forum to discuss the teens of the neighborhood as a community. For example, and I know it’s been said before, there’s a ton of wasted space in the woods that can be put to use for our kids (night time mini golf, batting cages, etc.). However, NOTHING should excuse open beers and marijuana use in our streets, especially by under-aged teens and pre-teens. I think I’d like to see more police patrols on Friday and Saturday nights.
Hot debate. What do you think?
7
2
That is so true, never thought of that, instead of swings and skate park how about batting cages, mini golf … night time ….great idea but wonder if the city would go along with it since it is their land, beside it would be well lit and those night time drinking parties may just have to move to new spot.s but I DO like the idea! … ..

have you been to a mini golf course or batting cage lately, a little on the costly side I’m sure if either was ever built the cost will be the excuse from everyone. Besides do you really think giving these loving caring children bats, golf clubs and balls is a good idea, no longer will the brick be the weapon of choice to break the bus shelters

Cost is not a problem, these teens in their hip clothes (not inexpensive), and their video game systems that cost a lot of money per game can afford mini golf, indoor paintball or whatever. The question is – is it even possible to technically or legally feasible to build anything kid friendly there? I don’t care if it’s for profit, an indoor community center, or whatever – as long as it’s an alternative thing to do/place to go at night for teens of the neighborhood.

The stores down here are to small for miniature golf or paintball . there was a small indoor field for children 12 and under but that’s now a paintball target range . The park dept said no to paintball but I don’t think anyone asked them about miniature golf .The only place big enough and still control by Gerritsen beach is kiddie beach but to be fair if I lived next to the beach I wouldn’t like hearing the markers going off all day .paintball fields are legal , I just don’t see the parks dept saying yes . batting cages would be nice

your right there is no excuse for it . more police presents or better response time maybe part of the answer . I just worry because that is a double edgared sword . more then likely the innocent will suffer with the guilty . But I guess we must try something . Community meeting is also a good idea but once something like this is started we can’t stop or the ones making the trouble will know they can win . I’m not say you must join a group , plant a tree or volunteer to clean marine park , but it must be organized . The weeds aren’t the only wasted space down here Kiddie beach is only used a small part of the year and then mostly during the day . . maybe they will be willing to hold a nonprofit event or dance for the teens .. Like I said before I don’t know the answer , I just know a lot of good people in the beach are getting very mad about this .

From what I remember from the last time we were going to do it, apparently pairs of volunteers ride around the neighborhood mostly at night and just watch, I believe that they maybe given a radio by P.D to report any thing suspicious, The volunteers do not handle any problems they just report them.

In the beach now, parking is so cut throat that no one wants to “ride around” once they have a spot Also, FYI the cops do issue summons for underage drinking, but they tell the kids that as long as the fine is paid, their parents will not be informed. This did not happen in GB in my situation but, if the “child” is underage wouldn’t you think that that cops would “escort” them home?
Like or Dislike:

I don’t have problems with parking here, so I would not mind picking up a partner to ride around with if it came down to that.
Cops issuing summonses for underage drinking should at the very least NOTIFY parents. Can this confirmed and discussed with the 61st? It could be discussed (maybe at the GBPOA meetings) along with all the other suggestions mentioned like undercover verification of ID checks at local stores, a neighborhood watch, stop and frisk, and increased patrols, etc.

You know that “a good talking to” never did sit well with me either. I could agree if that incident was an isolated crime but If GB.net wasn’t exaggerating and it truly is a “Crime Spree” then this child is part of it or he knows the people involved in the auto break-ins and is imitating them. The person that caught this child should’ve called the authorities and had the matter dealt with properly.

Hey Gerritsenbeach.net, is there a ‘sticky’ area, tab, or page you can create to stick community resources? Where are the menus you used to have? Maybe in a similar you can drop some stuff that parents, or kids themselves can read. Here are a couple of things found via a quick internet search:
http://www.surgeongeneral.gov/topics/underagedrinking/FamilyGuide.pdf
http://books.nap.edu/html/underage_drinking/reportbrief.pdf
http://www.stopalcoholabuse.gov/
You don’t have to post these in particular but you get the idea. Small steps.
I was also thinking of other resources like the names, addresses and phone of representatives, our evacuation zones in case of disaster, stuff like that. Just a thought.

I like the idea a lot actually.
The links you have are good just to post that in a sticky area would not be good.
A resource zone would be good. If I can find the time to put it all together. Unless you would be so kind?
I loved the menus section. Honestly I still use all of my menus that I scanned!
Sure, I can put some things together. What format do you need stuff in? JPEG, PDF, etc. What sizes and stuff like that. I can email you things and you post whatever you deem appropriate, and have time and space for.

Text would be good as text. I can work with any format.
Personally I think one or two good nights of the police or Consumer Affairs doing sting operations for underage sale of beer and smoke products will deflate the wonderful youths activities as they will have no place local to get their party supplies. I’m sure a few court appearances with a few hundred dollars in summons will help the merchants get the message not to be selling to youths

If its the stores in the beach selling the beer then yes that might work. but all you need is one kid with a car or one older brother willing to make a few bucks and we’re back where we started . if we know where and when then they drink and smoke then maybe we can get the police to act on it .

I live on Aster and it has gotten crazy. My car was broken into and I do see tons of kids walking down the block with black bags after walking toward the school. I am sure that they are buying the beer from Dericks and taking to one of the dead ends.
These kids are to young for this crap and if they are drinking beer now then by the time they are 16 that will be old and onto Meth etc to get their attention.
We need the cops to be down here more often to keep an eye out.

What would you like to do to make your life more interesting?
What projects would you like to create or mission you would like to accomplish?
Do you have a plan?
If you do, perhaps you could share it with us seniors in your community.
I have the time so if you have the plan and ambition to carry it out I will certainly donate my time and energy to help you.
