Lost Dog Found: Maddoc and Seba

0313002124

I wonder if you post a picture of this lost dog, I did post on your site but probably would be better if you posted this picture. Found in the storm last night , elderly female dog, found on madoc ave . The dog is having problems walking and seems to be blind in one eye. . The dog is at a neighbors house right now but I think they may have to bring it to the ASPCA just to make sure the dog is cared for because we don’t know if it is ill from being out in that weather last night or how long is was out. She is very gentle , and we believe she must belong to someone and probably could not have walked very far……. my email if you want to contact me is Janenower@yahoo.com… Thank you for your help

I agree with that, the ASPCA wouldn’t have done anything for that dog, it would have been a death sentence. The Brooklyn shelter is like a concentration camp for dogs and cats. It is the saddest place I have ever been to. The city should be ashamed of the way animals are treated. There are other non profit rescues and no kill shelters that can be called instead when your in that situation.

I have volunteered at Animal Care and Control. They are trying to become euthanasia-free. They don’t have much money, only what the city gives them. I worked with a program where they were training people to train the dogs so they will have a better chance of finding a home. The people who work there do care about the animals, but money is tight, and they are trying to think outside the box to find solutions. They work to try and get the pets homes, but if they can’t, they spend hours networking with other rescue organizations outside the city to take in the animals. For example, there was a shepherd mix who could not be placed, but the director of the shelter made calls and got him placed with a shepherd rescue organization. It is sad that they still don’t have the space and the resources that they need, and some animals do get put down, but not because the city is cold and cruel.

If you really want to make a difference, especially since spring is right around the corner and the shelters will be overwhelmed with puppies and kittens, you can volunteer, and donate…they are desperate for food, blankets, and toys for the animals, or donate money, or foster animals until they find a good home.

Sorry Shana, the city IS cold and cruel. I work with several rescue organizations, several in the mayors allience, and know too well. I know the people who work in the ACC shelter are for the most part very compassionate and there are space issues.I have a lovely black and white female kitten that I am fostering right now. The organizations I work with go in and get the ones that are slated for death and try and give them another chance. I think the city should be ashamed of the pitiful budget of ACC. And they have just taken a huge budget cut by June, and another couple hundred thousand for next year. WTF, the animals can’t vote. They have no money for canned dog/cat food and have to wet it for the older dogs and puppies that can’t chew, you can’t defend that Shana. It’s a shame. I don’t think that the people in this city realize how bad it is, that the blankets you ask be donated (or old towels or sheets) are because so many animals are standing on the bars of the cages, with no comfort. Some of these animals have already been abused. They’ve been abandoned. Like I say, I don’t think most people are aware of the problem, they assume that the city takes care of them, it doesn’t.

I don’t know if this is the case, but I have seen this many times since I have had many dogs. I know you found the owner though but I have to say it. From what you describe, the dog is old. Many older dogs when they are sick will try to run away to die somewhere else. You can check me on this. Of course, she may have just gotten out by mistake. One last note:I know this sounds like a plug, but the animal shelters are in trouble due to budget cuts. They are asking for donations to feed the animals.

The dog got out because the owners fence blew down in the storm, the owner let the dog out not realizing that part of the fence was gone, poor dog wandered out. The owners were very upset to say the least.

There really should be some type of 24 hour emergency number where the public can call if they see an injured animal and it can be picked up and treated ( not be put to sleep). This happened on a weekend evening and the animal rescue was closed… It is only humane to have a rescue for injured animals that will come and take the animal in for medical treatment, many times if you see an injured dog you are afraid to approach it for fear that it may be in pain or bite so many people just walk away. Anyone know of such a place that can be called in Brooklyn ???

Many of us would be very willing to donate items to the shelters if we knew where to bring items. It is sad that they are in such great need especially for items like food, blankets and towels. Too bad there is not a central place nearby that local people (especially people who don’t drive ) can bring these items so they can be collected and brought to shelters that need them, any ideas anyone :-)

BARC (Brooklyn Animal Rescue Coalition) used to have collections in the parking lot of Petco in Sheepshead Bay. I don’t know if they still do it, but then they distributed to other shelters. The ACC (the city shelter) is at 2336 Linden Blvd. 718-788-4000 Call for hours. They also have no kitty litter. There are many small non profits around as weel, like Sean Casey Animal Rescue, and ECC. We would be happy to load up our van and bring it in for anyone who doesn’t drive. We need a drop off place for it though. Any ideas?

It would be nice if one of the area businesses or one of the organizations on the avenue that maybe had a little extra room, would be able to have some type of drop off set up so we could bring in items, I would not mind at all while shopping picking up a few extra cans of food or kitty litter or even donating some clean, slightly worn towels or small blankets that would make a comfortable, warm bed for a homeless dog or cat. Pickups could be made when the items start to build up and be delivered to shelters that could really use the items… I’d be happy to donate some time.

I’m going to speak to someone at the Cort Club today. Maybe they would agree to be a drop off point, and if they will maybe Danny could put something up here and we could make a collection. I know that most people are appalled by the situation, once they are aware of it and would donate food, toys, and old clean towels, blankets etc. You can also, if you have the time go to the shelters and take dogs for walks. They are so happy to get out of the cage for a while. If anyone has the time or inclination, you can also write to City Council or other elected officials about the pitiful situation for abandoned animals. Their budgets are cut by hundreds of thousands, it’s not millions, it’s not unsurmounable for the city to restore their budget, which was already not that great. Anonymous, if you (or anyone else)would like to get together on this, please email me at patricedolan@yahoo.com

The dog’s name is Taffy. She’s over 17 years old. I’m the owner. I guess you could say we belong to each other. I am SO SO appreciative of the people who took her in and the young lady I spoke to that connected us. She hadn’t been out long when she was found. When my neighbor told me the fence blew down & Taffy got out, I was distraught. She never leaves the yard alone. I know she was scared. Again, thank you to all who had a hand in her safe return. My son and his friend found the dog walking on Madoc Avenue soaked and confused, at first they thought it had been hit by a car but when they went over to her they realized that she was old and very wet and tired Luckily his friends father walked over to see if he could help they ended up taking the dog and putting her into my sons car and drove the dog over to his friends house . I am so happy that they were able to get “Taffy” off the street before something happened to her.. A Happy ending for a cute dog

I have 3 pets that were dumped by people that did’nt want them up at the fields . they have bought joy to my life. My son recently had a cat follow him home from Dr. Johns park. I took it to the vet & after 1,ooo $ in bills I had to put him down becuase he was to sick. People dump there pets at the fields because they can’t afford the vet bills or they relocate and so on. The cat my son came home with was declawed & newtered, so hee was dumped. A pet is a commitment.

Ughhh, I can’t begin to tell you how many times similar things have happened to me. If your in that situation again, try going thru a non profit. They often have vets that work with them to keep costs down. If they know that you are going to provide a home, they will do everything they can to help.

the owner of the dog was driving around on sunday looking for the dog. she had informed me that her dog was sick and was suffering from diarrhea, so she proceeded to let the dog out into the yard. Due to the storm her gate had broke, and her dog ran out. she was a nervous wreck looking for the dog. I was so greatful that someone had taken the dog in and she was able to be reunited with her dog.
