[Ambulance Pulling Away with Suspect]

This could be bad news for Gerritsen Beach as the suspect does live in the area.

George “Pedro” D’Amato of Ebony Ct. a Gerritsen Beach resident was shot and killed by officers in front of PS 194.

NYPD Details:

On Monday March 8, 2010 at approximately 1510 hours, in the rear of 3117 Avenue W (P.S. 194), in the confines of the 61 Precinct, police received a 911 call of a man with a gun. Upon arrival, a uniformed police officer encountered a M/W/22 who pointed what appeared to be a silver handgun at the officer. The officer discharged three (3) rounds, striking the suspect. EMS transported the suspect to Coney Island Hospital where he is pronounced dead at 1611 hours. The Investigation is ongoing.

61 Precinct - 03-08-10

172134NEWBU
The gun used was a pellet gun painted silver and black.

The Zebra Super Shot pellet gun is an automatic “pistol” that shoots 50 shots in one loading. The “ammo” is soft, small plastic balls. Great fun for target practice. Not recommended for children under 8 years of age, as the balls could pose a choking hazard

Maybe they will write it up as disorderly conduct so the pct. can keep the crime stats down. I hope the PO involved get the counseling he needs… My prayers are with the officer and his family…Thank you to the NYPD for doing a job few would do…

I live in the coop building near the shooting. I was not home at the time of the shooting. Two detectives knocked on my door about a half hour ago and asked if I saw or heard anything. I asked them if it was a projects guy and they said no, they did not think so. I asked them if it a Gerritsen beach guy and they said possibly.

There isn’t gonna be “many many days of court” for this case. Sure, they’ll be an investigation, but this incident is as justifiable a case of Police using deadly force as there is. That toy gun was altered and painted to look real. Many witnesses saw the guy refuse to stop pointing the gun at Police Officers. It will also come out soon that the deceased was high as a kite on PCP. I’m not trying to badmouth the guy, but mark my words, he was fucked up on dust.

There is one person to blame for this tragedy and he already paided the ultimate price. I hope someone learns from his mistakes

But lets be honest, again at his age he is not a kid why would you do something so stupid? Or for that matter why not just drop the gun when told to do so. As far as his family, of course they should not be burying their son that is any parents worse nightmare. Just remember one thing both this policeman will live with this for the rest of his life and so will his family. Prayers should be for both.

Or unless you are committing suicide. You don’t wave that fake gun around if your gonna rob someone. You rob them. He waved it around until cops were called and then pointed it at them. They, of course, had no choice. How sad. Someone said that by age 22 you should be all straightened out, but I don’t think thats true. I know plenty of people who didn’t get their shit together until after that and still were able to become good citizens. It is still very young and harder if you have a criminal record and/or a drug habit. I know alot of his friends are very upset now and I hope it can at least serve as a wake up call to them. This is your one life, don’t waste it. If ever there was a case to get some help and support to our young people, this is it.

Absolutley! My heart goes out to the cop too. He will also have to live with this, and in that split second when he had to make that decision, he had no choice. But I’m sure that ending a young life is something that will weigh on him. But he isn’t at fault. This has happened before, how are the cops to know if it’s real or fake from a distance? My point is that this was a troubled kid, made bad choices and did alot of drugs. There has been a big rise in the mind-twisting drugs like PCP and LSD. And people/parents need to start paying attention to that. Xanex is nothing compared to some of the crap on the rise now. He was so young and I can’t help but feel that a wasted life is a shame. It’s too bad that he couldn’t see that there were other ways out of the way he was living, that he could still have turned it around. To feel at 22 that it is over for you and you have nothing to live for is an awful shame.

this is disgraceful no matter what kind of person anyone is no one deserves to lose thier life and how could anybody say the cops did a good job no one really knows all the circumstances around what happened all we know is someone lost their life over a toy that is very tragic what if it was you or your family member and there was a different situation and an officer made that decison to shoot and took you or one of your family member’s lives would u want people to say they deserved it. You should never wish death upon anybody.

I wouldn’t wish death on anybody either but this drug addicted lowlife could have gotten innocent children killed, walking around near a SCHOOL, threatening people with a fake gun painted to look real. What “different situation” would put any normal people’s family members walking around high on dust carrying and pointing a fake gun at people, scaring them enough to cal 911, and then turn it on a Police Officer????
The only reason someone high on drugs carries around a fake gun is because he was up to no good. BETTER HIM THAN AN INNOCENT PERSON. HIS ACTIONS CAUSED THIS; NO ONE ELSE’S.

Whats the difference if the cop had 2 years or 20?? Any cop would have acted the same way in this situation. And what do you mean “what hapened to shooting in the arm or leg” ?? The NYPD or any other Police Dept. is NOT trained to shoot in the “arm or leg”. If they use deadly force, it is because someone is using it against them, or in this case, pointing a fake gun PAINTED to look real at a Police Officer. What is wrong with you people pointing fingers at the cop?? There is only ONE PERSON responsible for this man’s death, and that is himself and no one else.

    2. Sickened by Ignorance says:

As an Army vet, and seeing that NYPD is a para-military organization with much the same training as we get, I can tell you this officer did exactly what we are trained to do. 3 times is training in the military. Not once and wait to see if he shoots us back. You’re life is on the line in this situation and we are taught that if someone is coming at us with “deadly force” ( in this case, what this officer thought was a weapon being pointed at him), we are to respond with deadly force. Stop blaming this officer if you have no idea what situation he was in or what you would do in a similar situation. I have had a weapon pointed at me, and let me tell you, if this officer had stopped to ask questions and that weapon had been real, we would be looking at a dead cop. I think it is unfortunate that this happened, but honestly…….the kid was an idiot for pointing ANYTHING at a police officer!
If a civilian held up an object with the intent to throw it in Iraq, and if it looked like a grenade to the point that we were convinced…..would you expect us to wait until it goes off to shoot him? Answer me that? Moron

Instead of getting pissy at each other, how about just saying this: the whole thing is a tragedy, really sad.

It’s too bad the kid was so messed up (and/or on drugs) that he did what he did– it’s stupid, yeah, but people in their early 20s OFTEN do really stupid things– including stupidly criminal things– and then live to outgrow it. This kid won’t get the chance to outgrow it– same as some kids don’t live to outgrow their “stupid fast driving” days or their “stupid promiscuous sex” days.
You know what I mean? So it’s sad for him and his family that he doesn’t have any second or third chances to get it right.

However, the lady on the video is right. You play with fire, you get burnt. He just got burnt worse then most of us would wish for all the young dumb people we know (or we WERE!). He brought it on himself, yeah, but it’s still sad.

I think it’s sad for the cop, too! The cop did what he was trained to do. When it looks like someone is menacing the public with a gun– at a school, too!– and when someone is so unafraid that it looks like they are pointing a gun at a cop and refusing to put it down– well, it’s textbook. The cop is supposed to shoot to kill because this is someone who seems to be highly dangerous.

I guarantee you, this cop is probably going to have some hard times, too– despite what a lot of people think, cops aren’t all so hard that killing someone doesn’t touch them– they feel it, too. And when it turns out that the person killed wasn’t holding a gun– well, the cop can feel that he was justified in shooting– but still feel crappy about it. I feel bad for HIM and his family, too. It’s a burden I wouldn’t wish on anyone.

This is indeed a sad event. Someones life was taken, but the cop did what he was trained to do. What if the gun was real? No one knew it was fake, and the cop couldn’t take a chance on something like that. Were all going to have our own opinions and feelings about this…Thats what makes us human and all unique. If we weren’t unique the same comment would have been posted 50 times by now. If the kid was black, some of us might have been on the other side of the fence with this, or could have had much different feelings. But white or black, he did what he did and this is what happens when you endanger other peoples lives with a gun, even if its fake. It’s like yelling fire when there is no fire. But I must say, I too feel a tad bit safer knowing the police are out there. But at the same time I have been pretty horrified with the stuff that goes around in our community. The bus shelters being destroyed, drugs being found and so on. We do indeed live in a good community, and no matter where you go, there will always be ups and downs. I just want our area to be safer and to try and stop some of the things that happen. No, Im not saying were gonna become Hippie Beach, but theres too much bs going on. Lets all live long lives and have shelters to wait under for the damn bus.

Here it is in a nutshell, everybody loses. Parents lost their son, a police officer now has to live with the fact that he took a life, (not easy folks to do), a troubled person lost his life, children are scared, the community gets a lot of attention that it probably doesn’t really need. It wouldn’t have mattered if the cop had 20 months or 20 years, it wouldn’t have mattered if the guy was 15 or 22. He made a very bad choice and paid dearly for it. We must pray for all involved. End of story.

People really should watch, what they write on here, cause family members might be reading this and do they really need to read this about their brother, cousin, son , nephew…its’ the family that is suffering now, have alittle respect for them and the hard time their going through right now, we all know that the cop is not at fault and didn’t actually what he was supposed to do in that situation, and everyone know that even though the gun was fake cops had no way of knowing that, and it’s the kids fault what happen, and i’m sure there is more to this story, whether he had mental issues or on drug, but i really think ripping this kid apart on here after the fact and for the family to read is just not good! let the family mourn and feel they have some support!

Good points, but this is not the forum where his parents/family should be looking at for memories of their loved one. It is a News website, and that shooting was big news around here. I suggest everyone who wants to leave nice things to say about him go to the page that his friends set up on Facebook, called RIP George.

  30. Former GB Kid says:

This was a tragedy…plain and simple. Instead of saying hateful things or using this forum to start fights with each other on who’s to blame why don’t we all just come to the agreement that this was a tragedy. No one was there, no one knows all the details of what happened and the bottom line is that NOTHING is going to change what happened to him, his family, his friends or the officer. We could point fingers all day, we could blame the cop for using what some think was “excessive force” (not my personal opinon), we could blame George for waving the gun around, we could blame the drug dealer who sold him his drugs, we could blame the schools for not paying enough attention to him as a kid, who cares???? He is DEAD and nothing and no one is going to change that and for you people who wanna say he got what he deserved…how dare you? You didn’t know him, you didn’t know anything about who he was as a person. He was a good kid who went down a bad road and wasn’t able to find his way back before it was too late. He didn’t deserve this and had he been sober, he wouldn’t have been so careless or so stupid in his actions. Stop arguing and bickering between each other about who’s to blame and who’s right or wrong, don’t turn his tragedy into an outlet for you to release your pent up aggressions. In spite of what some of you may think, his family and friends do go on these sites, you would too to see what the news is saying about the incident and seeing as how the comments are right below the articles, it makes them hard to miss. Have any of you known an addict? Or been one? Do any of you know what its like to feel lost and scared and lonely? Some of us are fortunate enough to pull ourselves out of it, some of us aren’t. He acted under the influence. Drugs are called MIND ALTERING SUBSTANCES for a reason. That wasn’t who he was. We have all gotten high or drunk at some point in our lives and acted differently, some worse then others. What he did had nothing to do with who he was, who he REALLY was underneath all the shit in his system. I dont begrudge anyone on here to speak their minds and express their feelings but please, if you’re going to say anything make sure you’re doing so with an open mind to ALL involved in this tragedy and with a little consideration for the fact that at the end of the day all it boils down to is someone died way too young as a result of disease that is affecting our children more and more every year. It could’ve been your son or your nephew or grandson or cousin. It could’ve been anybody…so keep that in mind when you call him a thug and say that he got what he deserved.

Uhhhh, ftw you said about GB rats “…. what the fuck is wrong with you kids get juiced up and then go out and look for problems”. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn’t George get himself all juiced up, then go out and look for problems with a pellet gun painted to look like a real gun? He tried to rob cough syrup from the drugstore on Nostrand and Ave V right before this unfortunate accident. Oh yeah, and he was waving his “gun” around and standing in a shooters stance with it while pointing it at some terrified innocent people. This is a terrible, unfortunate tragedy, with no happy outcome. But you need to stop blaming everybody but George himself. If he jumped in front of a bus, would you be pissed at the bus?

well ,he knew better then the cop. if he had dropped the gun this would not have happened.
there were witness who reported what happend.
Why not blame the people who called 911 when they saw some one waving a gun near a school?

Why was he playing with a toy gun that was painted to look real? An adult is not going to play with a toy gun and and an adult is not going to paint a toy so it looks real.

  34. Just a Girl says:

I live in the beach and I have lived here all my life. I have a love/ hate relationship with this neighborhood as I am sure most residents might. I knew George. I haven’t hung out with him in years…but I always liked him. He never seemed to want to cause harm to anyone but I do recall many people picking on him and trying to cause harm on him. I was one of the few in my “group” that stuck up for him. Now I do not believe everything the papers say because anybody who has ever had anything written about them or somebody they know in the paper knows that the paper does lie and exaggerate. As a mature 24 year old young mother I do not feel it is appropriate for people to come on this website and completely bash this poor kid. (Yes I say kid because although he was 22 that does not mean he was as mature as a 22 year old, just the same as some 40 year olds in this neighborhood and elsewere I presume, are not as mature as they are expected to be). His family could be reading this and whether u think he got what he deserved or not his family does not deserve to see all these mean and hateful things about their lost baby. (I say baby because as a parent myself I kno that no matter how old your child is they will ALWAYS be your baby). There is a certain way to go about expressing your feelings whether they are good or bad and as adults which I assume we all are we should take a second look at how we are expressing ourselves. I personally do not have an opinion on this story itself because I was not there…I did not see what happened..and I won’t just believe something because people tell me to. Everybody has an opinion on everybody. Some people love me and others hate me…but I would like to think when I die even those that hate me wouldn’t be so harsh as you people are being on here. None the less we should also think about his friends. (Some of you…the close-minded, ignorant ones) will probably say his friends don’t matter, they are just like him…but that is not true these young individuals are definetly going through alot because of the fact that they lost a close friend. A friend u may not have known well enough to see that he might have actually been a good person. A friend that was maybe a great friend to them and always there for them. You should realize that losing a friend in a way such as this is going to change their lives forever as well. I am not saying nobody should feel the way the feel about this situation because as I said before everyone is entitled to their opinions…but please try to imagine how you would feel if it was your friend, your brother, your son, your cousin. Some of you may say this will never happen to any of my friends, cousins, children blah blah blah but lets face it, it very well can. NOBODY IS PERFECT MYSELF INCLUDED! So I personally feel if you are going to write your opinion down about this subject #1 it would be very respectable if you actually saw what happened. #2 Do it with class. Regardless of whatever the real story may be. A life was lost, a child was taken, a friend was taken…and the only person that actually got hurt in this whole situation is George…Everybody else directly involved is alive and breathing and with their families and friends. George is not and he never will be again. As I said before I have hung out with him…it has been a few years since I have but at one time or another I did, and I liked him. That is my opinion and I am sticking to it. P.S. if you have anything hurtful or ignorant to say about my post please do not waste your time because I will not be retaliating or checking back to see if anyone does or does not reply to this. I am not writing to start drama I am writing for my own personal reasons. Thanks

And one other thing I would love to post my actual name because I am not ashamed of anything I have written, however, I am well aware that some people on here like to throw up peoples own issues…and i am not about to have that happen to me. Everyone has issues and problems lets all keep that in mind, and lets think back to when we were 22..if you are gonna say you didn’t do dumb shit at 22 than you are in serious denial.

Ok I am really done now.

I cannot believe the person who said ” One less thug off the street” . If I found out who you were, you’d be strapped to a gurney begging for your own life kiddo..trust that. You should fucking off yourself for even saying that.
There are many disputes over this tragedy. It seems like everyone is talking crap about George..however you didn’t even know him. Society sickens me. You all are quick to judge others but you’re not innocent. There are tons of kids in this neighborhood who pop xanex like it’s going out of style and cause problems….your own kids. So don’t single out one individual . George was one of the sweetest kids I’ve ever known and anytime I was around him, he had me laughing up a storm. This whole thing doesn’t make sense but the fact that people are bad mouthing him is absurd to me. I hate how people are making him look like a monster.
All you siding with cops need a REALITY CHECK. Just because you call 911 doesn’t guarantee you justice. Many of them are corrupt and get away with crap that nobody else would. If I were a cop and shot someone 10 times, I bet I would walk away and get in no trouble. Everything is covered up and paid off.

George I will fight for your honor no matter what these low lives say.
Keep talking crap. I bet NONE OF YOU TALKING SHIT would say this in public. You all hide behind your facades and your little anonymous comments.
I bet if this were someone close to you ..you wouldn’t be bad mouthing them. And don’t even try to say you wouldn’t. It only affects you when it hits home.

So think of it as being someone close to you.

You can all go fuck yourselves- those the one talking smack.

George, may you rest peacefully. Its a shame what happened to you. I have to stick up for you. I do. I won’t let these people get away with saying horrible stuff about you. My condolences go out to your family and friends.

Today is your wake and honestly I don’t even know how I’m gonna deal with it or how anyone is.
You’re in a better place. This world is corrupt and people are horrible.
Save a seat for me…I will see you again one day.
