Courier Life has posted such a depressing blotter about Gerritsen Beach that I need a Xanax.
Drug bust
Quantities of Xanax and marijuana were allegedly recovered after a car was stopped in Gerritsen Beach Saturday.
Police said that they pulled a 1995 BMW over near the corner of Avenue X and Gerritsen Avenue at 12:30 a.m. on February 13 after cops noticed that the man behind the wheel wasn’t wearing his seat belt.
Cops inspected the car after the driver couldn’t produce ID, allegedly finding marijuana “scattered around the center console,†officials said. They also found a bag of 41 Xanax pills in the driver’s jacket pocket.
The motorist, who was ultimately identified as 19-year-old Michael McGrath, was taken into custody, charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

- Use can lead to profound psychological and physical dependence, including severe symptoms of withdrawal.
All drugs should decriminalized and available to anyone over 18-21 from behind the counter of a drug store. This takes the profit out of drug dealing, takes the government out of our lives, takes the criminality out of non-violently/safely enjoying a substance and frees up billions of tax dollars for better things like keeping child molesters and gun runners in jail or universal college and universal health care.
If you wanna mess up your life being addicted to drugs, by all means it's your life, and that's tragic enough, but this war on drugs is a complete failure and it's about time we all grow up and realize it.

Fact: The war on drugs is unconstitutional. My body is my own and I don't need big brother telling me what I can and can not put into it. If the government wants to fund studies, educate the public on the dangers of drugs, put an age limit on consumption of drugs, and provide rehab, that's fine. But when you illegally deny me the right to consume which substances I choose, you violate the United States Constitution. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
Fact: De-criminalization and regulation of drugs into the hands of government licensed distributors will make obtaining drugs by underage users just as hard as it is to get alcohol. When I was younger it was easier for my friends at 15 to buy pills and marijuana then it was to get beer.
Fact: De-criminalization of drugs puts the profit of drugs into the hands of the government and the licensed distributor. Not in the hands of gang members, cartels and kids who are trying to get rich quick. This fact alone would eliminate all of the killing accounted for drug deals gone wrong.
Fact: With non violent, safe users and dealers no longer being prosecuted and jailed, the local, state and federal government would have billions of dollars to spend on real problems like unemployment, poverty and education.
Fact: De-criminalization would not mean a free for all to go around driving 'zonked' on drugs, The same laws for drinking and driving would go for drugs as well. Harder if they were serious. It also wouldn't even mean drug use would go up. In countries with more lenient drug policy, those governments have succeed in making drugs sterile and uncool. Their children do not see doing drugs as something illegal and sneaky and cool. They see it as a waste of time and boring.
Fact: I can go to a doctor and lie about having anxiety and get Xanax in one day. So you can you, but we dont see people driving 'zoked' any more then anything else now do you?
Grow up already. People can get drugs in prison for god sakes! What makes you think this war is winnable? It's time we de-criminalize and come to our senses.

Mrs. Smartass has taken an IQ test on 3 separate ocassions. All 3 times she scored in the genius range. In regards to Jim Donovan, he was'nt defending what Mike is accused of. He was saying cut the family some slack. Printing of his address was out of line,as some of the comments that are being attributted to Mike Magrath. I doubt very much it is Mike that is writing those comments Mike is going to have to answer for what he is charged with. He should not have to answer for what people are fabricating on this site & his family should be left out of it. As for Jim Donovan being called a loser,what does that make you ?

Reading some of the posted comments sounds like a bad episode of "Twilight Zone" The real problem is your Churches are closeing, your community groups talk nonesense, and most of you are apathetic about the neighborhood…..It was a better place when we had dirt roads and we did'nt ask others to solve problems. I can agree on most things you said. People are apathetic, groups do talk nonsense, I'm not sure which of our churches are closing, but I think I can safely say active membership is down.
As for the website degenerating into "whatever bad name ", I will disagree with you. I post a few times a week sometimes more, sometimes less, I can never know what story is going to explode into a comment war. The community 100% drives what a story will turn into and a good amount of the time, actual conversation happens on issues that would never take place otherwise.
Honestly, this was a non-story, until the community turned it into one. The story itself was a few weeks old by the time the paper picked it up, then I picked it up a full week later. It was a copy and paste story, nothing to it.
The blotter is something I normally copy and paste. This drug issue is discussed extensively at local meetings, extensivly around the community, and I've been warning folks for months now about arrests – therefore this story is pertinent to the readers of GB.net
Again honestly, I am proud to have anonymous driven comments, the team at GB.net love our commenters, they are smart clever and funny. We do have a comment policy, any threats are removed and anything serious is reported to commenters ISP and police. Which thankfully hasn't happened yet.
I don't think anyone I or anyone I work with here at the website has ever claimed I am an investigative reporter. If anything I am just your average resident with a little technical knowledge that wants to spread information to the community.

You know Danny your above statement is not 100% true. In it you state that "any threats are removed." Well there are plenty of statements on here that appear to be a hairs breath away from a full on threat and I have noticed quite a few comments that were removed that had no hint of a threat whatsoever. They also did not have a speck of foul language. Your comment policy seems to be whoever calls you up and bitches the most about a particular comment gets you to remove it for them.

Ricky it may seem to you that all the kids down here are taking 'druges' because those are the kids you see and do drugs with and go to raves with, but most of them are not. Yes, there are kids with drug problems, and some parents, and thats a shame.
