Seriously, for those of Gerritsen Beach still at work or who don’t have children to pick up your lucky. We’ve covered the arrival/dissmall mess before here and here and honestly we have been letting everyone off easy.
In the past posts, it was the 61st precinct bowing to pressure to enforce the double parking. Recently every now and then a traffic agent, who looks lost, comes in and writes tickets. They mostly come in before dismissal and write tickets on Gerritsen Avenue for people parked in bus stops and if they see an expired registration/inspection. I have no problem with that, that is their job. However, they still have to obey all traffic laws just like anyone else, they can’t make U-turns, double park, etc.
As I was driving out yesterday I had the pleasure privilege of driving behind a traffic agent through dismissal. The parents cars were literality double parked on both sides of Gerritsen Avenue from Channel to Brenmans, it was a particularity bad day, maybe it was the snow coupled with a friday – who knows. The above agent would stop and go, not for the safety of children, but just to be scary. This agent was TRIPLE PARKING completely blocking north and south traffic. I guess they are allergic to getting out of their cars and walking to warn or issue tickets.
The parents cars were bad, this do-nothing agent, made matters worse. Forcing people into a panic driving through RED FLASHING stop lights on school buses and pulling out without looking.
GerritsenBeach.net will be getting back out there to highlight the problem again and maybe offer a solution. What ever happened to the parking lot? (ZING)

If the parents weren’t parking illegally the traffic enforcement wouldn’t be there.

I have no love what so ever for the traffice agents BUT how is this their fault ? Put the blame where it belongs, on the inconsiderate parents who were double parked and blocking the traffic. Or is this one of those, this is GB we can do as we want and don’t need to follow the laws of the land. In case no one noticed, there is PLENTY of parking on Ave X side of the park, park your car, legally, and walk up to the school

Mike, how could you say it’s a problem with no solution at this point, there are several solutions its just a matter of people being respectful of others, obeying the laws and doing the right thing. Ave X is a two lane one way street, PLUS parking, unlike Gerritsen Ave which is a two way with only one lane in each direction, hence when the selfish double park that one lane is blocked. There is plenty of parking on Ave X for all to park and not impede the flow of traffic. My guess is it is just a matter of laziness and maybe a few drivers not being able to drive across Gerritsen Ave coming of Ave X
Plow Driver is right about some poor kid getting hit, then everyone in that school will be crying blaming the driver and demanding where is the enforcement and oh why was it allowed to happen.
I for one appauld when I see the Traffic Agents and on the rare ocassion the police there. Don’t blame the Traffic people for not wearing their hat and sneaking up on cars I’m sure MANY of the parents whose kids go to the school have tricks in their business to get their mission accomplished. Bottom line get off Gerritsen Ave with your ILLEGALLY parked car, walk to the school, kids need their exercise and God knows so do many of their parents

Well I have 4 kids and usually pick up more and have an infant who I do not want to get sick. So for the brief period that it takes to double park and pick my children up or off at school, where is the problem. Besides what about the school busses, well they drop off kids right to the door because their parents live to far or are to lazy. So only those kids should be privaleged? Let me ask so this makes it OK for Traffic to triple park instead of parking on Ave x and walking up. How does this make it any better?

Hey Frank if you’re picking up your 4 kids plus other kids and also have an infant with you there is a HUGE big deal when you double or triple park, you’re not only endangering your 4 kids but the other kids you are picking up never mind you are showing them ole I’m above the law and screw everyone else attitude. Here’s a suggestion, if you’re transporting that many kids to and from school get a school bus or a livery and legally park frnt row in front of the school

Not these lazy people. They have to get there more than 1/2 hour early to get the spot closest to the gate. And don’t forget the inconsiderate clods who block the driveways across the street. There is plenty of parking on Ave X and the streets behind Gerritsen. All it requires is walking a few extra steps. Get off your lazy butts and do the right thing. Show your kids a good example. Don’t follow, be a leader and do the right thing. Until that happens, I hope they are there daily to give out tickets. I personally am tired of having my driveway blocked on a daily basis!

Now a light a Channell makes a ltille more sense of course lights don’t make drivers better drivers. I’ve seen the occasional MORON speeding down the ave in the morning before school right up the middle because the 2 cars in front of him were doing the speed limit, this person would blow right throught the light anyway

I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t the front of the school a NO PARKING Zone and for School Buses, Every morning there are cars PARKED not stopped unloading in front of the school and a the school buses are unloading kids onto the street to walk between cars, shouldn’t they be unloaded onto the sidewalk.
I know many people are against any type of traffic restrictions and barriers but I for one wouldn’t mind seeing a barrier or those hard plastic cones running down the middle of the avenue in front of the school, for one it will stop all the U turns and second people won’t be able to double park because traffic won’t be able to pass
Keep it moving people, a little exercise of walking a few feet won’t hurt

It’s really up to the principal of the school to get it under control. Marine Park JHS on Stuart used to be a mess after school. Yellow and city buses picked up on Stuart and Fillmore. Parents parked at the curb and weaved in and out to pick up kids, all while the regular thru traffic ignored the schoolbuses and kept going. And alot of parents were parked in the driveways across the street. It was a miracle that no kids or anyone else was ever killed there. The principal worked with MTA, the Yellow bus companies, and School Safety/Police, to close the street to traffic while the buses all pickup on Stuart, expedited and monitored by all the teachers and staff. She didn’t care who was pissed off, she was only concerned with the safety of the kids and being as considerate as possible to the neighbors. As it should be. It’s only closed for a short time and everyone is alot safer. I know you can’t close Gerritsen Ave., but there has got to be a solution. These inconsiderate parents are virtually closing the Ave every afternoon anyway. It’s really up to the PS277 principal to find the solution and implement it. I’m sure she doesn’t want the mommies mad at her, but in the interest of safety, it needs to be done.

In all fairness I have to tell you that MP is a JHS and students come from all over Brooklyn.
They are not only neighborhood kids that are within walking distance. PS277 has mostly local school kids that can walk to school if the lazy parents would walk them instead of driving them.

Come on do you really expect anyone in that building to come outside past the doors. (Wait I take that partially back, the custodians there do a GREAT job keeping the front cler of snow and clean) There is a School SAFETY Officer there who is an employee of the NYPD and all she does is sit at the door making sure people sign in. She has never been on that sidewalk expect when going to or from work. Maybe she needs to be reminded her job is about the safety of the children not pleasing the PTA and principal. Every day I go past dozens of schools and always see the Safety Officer outside at dismissal keeping things moving.
I gues its time for the 311 number to start geting calls again, last time the calls started some people’s wallet’s go a little lighter

Hey Howard, slow down before you go looking to get someone fired! The principal of a school nowadays is in charge of everything. Everything. They won that right in a conract years ago. Including the School Safety Officers. His/Her job, along with everyone elses is to basically make the principal (and the PTA) happy. If the principal wanted her out on the sidewalk, she would be there, but someone else would have to watch the door or anyone could just walk in. I believe there is only 1 safety officer at PS277. If you pass dozens of schools and see safety officers outside I’m sure it’s because there are several assigned to that school. And because that is where the principal wants them to be. I don’t think 1 person would make a difference to what goes on up there anyway. The principal has the power to make every teacher etc. be outside at dismissal, and also to have the police enforce the traffic laws. I’m sure alot of parents would be upset with her but ultimately it’s about the safety of not only the kids but of everyone else who drives past. If Mrs. Fish decided to lay down the law and there was backlash against her, all the people who are complaining about this should make sure they come back in support of her.

First, the school safety officer is an employee of the NYPD and is assigned for the safety of the entire school. If you have any doubt make a call about the safety officer and you’ll see how fast the NYPD will investigate them and discpline them not the principal not the dept of education. If you’re right that the principal can have all her staff out on the sidewalk at dismissal then they ought to be there but I’m starting to wonder if she is just another fixture that has been in place for years and not see change. Lastly fyi, if as stated the principal can control the police and have enforcement done, do you know who she is calling, the school Safety Unit and after they evaluate it, they then pass the info to the local precincts

Yes, the school safety officer is NYPD. School Safety is a very organized, well run unit. They have higher ranking officers that they answer to, that come to check on them or respond when they are needed. And they all work together with regular NYPD. There are also regular NYPD liasons in the precincts that respond to specific problems or complaints in the schools. But the principal is the Supreme Being in a school. Whatever the protocol or hierarchy, he/she can request just about anything and do whatever needs to be done to make it happen. IT”S THEIR SCHOOL. IT’S THEIR RESPONSILBILITY. Please don’t anyone take this wrong. Mrs. Fish is a wonderful person and I am in no way knocking the job she is doing in 277, I am just stating that if she became more involved in the problems of drop off, pick up and parking, that things would change. I think all she does now is send a letter home warning parents a couple times a year and asking them not to double park. Either at her request thru NYPD/Scool Safety they would have more enforcement OR at her request up the line of – Custodian to SCA for construction of a rear driveway/parking lot/pickup dropoff area. She could also request the involvement of our esteemed local polititians to expedite the process or funding. She is the one to make this happen. Principals have the authority over everyone who works in the school, no matter who they technically work for, and getting the kids into school and out of it safely is their job.

Please she has enough problems! If it is such an issue for you maybe you should help out and be up there instructing parents on where they should or should not park. Maybe even on how to raise them I am sure you could be a great help to the community. Maybe you could even solve the problem of why kids are still getting bussed in from other neighborhgoods when we cannot send ours to any other schools due to zoning. Seems like if you could complain maybe look further then help we are always looking for help. Dig deep! besides overlooking how traffic agents triplepark causing worse condition

Hey Frank, what the hell does bussing have to do with the illegal parking or obstructing traffic. Its not the school buses who are the problem and I’ll bet that 99.% of the car promblem is from GB residents. The topic has NOTHING to do with bussing or people from outside the area

Had a woman drive through the crosswalk @ Channel & Gerritsen while kids were crossing & with the crossing guard standing in the middle of Gerritsen with her hands up. She stopped to drop off her kids @ 277. She said to me ” there’s no light there”. I replied ” the crossing guard is the light “. THe very next morning , same thing/different driver. Some are inconsiderate, some are just stupid & should not be allowed to drive.

I dropped and picked up my kids from PS277 every day for years (just stopped this year,) and I have always found a spot. Yes , I had to walk up to the school because I parked on Gerritsen (by the fields,) but I ALWAYS found a legal spot. It is sad but true, things will not change until someone gets hurt.

Nope, not special … 2 kids in the school. All the while taking care of a baby (yes that baby never got sick from the short walk to the school.) I also used to pick up 2 other children who belonged to other people. Was it inconvenient to have to get the baby out of his car seat, open the stroller and get over to the school? Yes it was. But I could never deal with the craziness outside the school. I stayed far away. So, I was in the same boat you are. I did not double park outside the school, and I picked up my kids in weather most foul. You may not agree with me, but there is no reason to say, “your (you’re) special” because you disagree.
Granted, the traffic agent was completely wrong by triple parking. That just makes the matter worse. There has to be a better solution to the madness outside the school.

Besides double parking, why is nothing done about cars that run the lights on Gerritsen Avenue at Bijou (at PS 277), or at Ave W? Why is nothing done about cars making illegal left turns from Allen Ave into Gerritsen or illegal right turns from Gerritsen into Ave X right at the side of Dr.Johns’ park? Children who are walking alone never seem to look in both directions before crossing the street. They look only in one direction, the direction traffic has supposed to be moving.

Out of control now I was taught to ALWAYS look!!! this is why people get hit cause they put all of the responsibility on the driver who has blind spots and probably just getting home from work, rather than putting on the incopetance og people who cannot cross a street

The 277 pick up/drop off has been an issue for over 20 years, Its been addressed countless times even up to date there seems to be no remedy to the situation. Its clearly evident that the new layout on the avenue is not at all helping any matters, especially this one. The amount of money spent on tickets received, the stress and aggrevation along with the confusion for a solution seems to be relentless. Not sure if it has been considered if so then disregard. An option to alleviate this everlasting madness could be to weigh the value of a portion of the weeds at Bijou/Gerritsen to the everlasting stress the congested streets bring daily. Im sure a fairly sized portion can be paved and turned into a parking lot. One 1/2 for Staff, along with a no more than 30 minute area and a basic driveway for dropping off and picking up only. Its done in almost every school outside the city and works fine. The space is available its all about presenting it the right way. It’ll keeps the Staff from having to take parking from the homeowners, keeps bus stops clear, the kids are alot safer going to and from there parents vehicle and traffic shouldnt be any where near as bad. Thats my take on a solution, then again Im a distant observer. Good Luck!!

That’s what I’m talking about! The school and the way it was built many years ago is now obsolete. Mothers years ago did not drive their kids to school everyone either walked or took the bus. Now just about everyone drives their kids to school which cannot accommodate the cars, along with the new pattern on the avenue. Maybe creating different times for certain grades to arrive at school could relieve some of the congestion out front, but parents have to realize that its drop and go no time to sit and bs with other people or teachers. Or as Kdunne said which could really be a good idea is to create somekind of driveway by channel avenue any solution would probably better than what goes on now. I think all ideas should be welcome.

your right o course obey the law but be realistic the school is oboslete in this day with everyone that drives we do need to find a better solution to the problem and personally the grid on the avenue did not
help any either. It may have slowed down traffice but created a bigger monster up by the school and that is what needs to be addressed. find a way to do a stop and drop!

A street should be created behind the school to come out on Avenue X. Only Cars that are picking up children or dropping them off should drive there. All children should enter and leave through the rear.

so cut a street for cars and what do away with the park ? put a street running thru the middle of the park for the inconsiderate to drive? That would be real safe for the kids in the park. These inconsiderate one way not my child I can do what I want people, won’t park now along Ave X what makes you think they’ll drive behind the school onto Ave X.
Sorry but this isn’t a promblem that’s been around forever, parents espically mothers did not drive their kids to school when I was younger, as said before most probably 90% walked or took the bus.
Time to get legal, time for the calls to start up again and some enforcement to be done, enough tickets and even towing will get the promblem corrected

Just for the record…..tea (agents) are supposed to obey all the laws, just like
everone else (incl. police officers) to wit: they are supposed to legally park and then issue the summons, but be aware this cond. only exists because of the witless people that double (and sometimes) triple park on gerritsen…
