Graffiti Arrests – Marine Park 20 year olds were arrested and charged for graffiting areas in Gerritsen Beach
Just curious, as to when if ever, has the Commanding Officer of the 61 Precinct been to a meeting.

Are you kidding me..So a stabbing by two unknown people goes un noticed by the police dept. and the speaker barely has any of the details, reading from a clip board.. I demand as a tax payer to have the CO here to explain why we mean nothing to him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Frank and anyone else who cares to has the absolute right to ask and demand for the Commanding Officer of the 61 Pct to show up at a Community Meeting Maybe Frank and few others who would like to vent or hear what is going on in this community can’t attend due to work or other reasons, but you see the Commanding Officer is PAID to attend communtiy meetings. What’s more insulting and the people who organize these meetings should be upset about is that the meetings are held on the same day every month so its not hard for this well paid City Executive to plan on attending a meeting, hell I think some of us would be even happy if he sent his Executive Officer. Do you think other communties would go so long without answers directly from the person in charge.

I’ve gone to most meetings over the past several years and you get the same info each time you ask a question – I don’t know about that. I’ll have to check into that. I think they print out a piece of paper just before they show up. The neighborhood asks questions on incidents and they don’t have a clue – just refer back to the question of the helicopter chase after the dirt bikers. They had no clue.

Lew Fidler is really letting his re election go to his head. Listen to what Mr. Broadhead says about him saying that any arrest will do because they will try and get info out of that kid. And thanks to the cops for standing up for the INTEGRITY of the people of the beach. We have never ratted people out to 5-0. They tried this crap on kids in the 60’s and 70’s and parents stood up for their kids and said YOU WILL NOT MAKE A RAT OUT OF MY KID. The COPS get paid to find out who commits crimes and if they can catch someone – GREAT! Then they have done their job. How dare Lew Fidler think that he can use the police to pressure kids caught for minor things and try scaring them into spilling their guts. I don’t know where all these tattletale rats came from that spend their days on 311, but now we have Lew Fidler planning to “make” the kids talk, How? by threatening them?, Lying to them about how much trouble they are ACTUALLY in for whatever their big, huge crime is. OOOOOOOO loitering!!!!! Don’t be fooled kids! If you are arrested Keep your mouth shut and IMMEDIATELY ask for a lawyer. Do not believe a word out of their mouths! They are allowed to lie to you. If you are given a summons, just say “thank you officer” and take it. ALWAYS CO OPERATE COMPLETELY with the officers and treat them with respect. But you do not have to tell them ANYTHING. And what ever you do, no matter what they say, don’t RAT your friends/peers. And Lew, I don’t know what kind of whining, sniveling kids you grew up with or WERE when you were a kid, but this neighborhood is not full of tattletales and rats and hopefully never will be although we seem to have more than our share of whiners now. As far as I’m concerned, if this is the trade off, you can shove your park, and all your other wonderful “improvements”.
Hot debate. What do you think?

“Ratting people out to 5-0″ ??? We are talking about Gerritsen Beach right?? When did our community adopt the metality and terminology of Inner-City “Urban” neighborhoods. In case you hadn’t noticed, the policy of not cooperating with the NYPD in those neighborhoods is exactly what contributes to the rampant lawlessness that goes on there, and caused the spiraling decline of those neighborhoods. Teaching generations of children not to cooperate with the police and protect those who choose to break the law is nothing more than a recipe for disaster. I think I speak for most neighborhood parents when I say I’d rather have my child do the right thing and report those who break the law to the NYPD rather than protect them. Only by punishing the lawbreaking element among us can we keep our neighborhood stable and thriving. And perhaps this bit of advice will better keep the “Man” from hassling our kids: DON’T BREAK THE LAW. Enough said.

It was always…that..when you found out your kid messed up.. you kicked their ass and took care of business..but these days the parents don’t believe it was their kid. These parents need to wake up. Ask any of the parents that over the last years had their kid arrested because another kid said it was their kid and the DA went and had each kid picked up. There was chaos in the beach with the precincts searching every car with road blocks etc.
We don’t need that again. Let the PD pick up Fidlers kids and see how he likes to pay for a criminal lawyer and try to prove your kid innocent. Enough is enough!

If we had the mere police presence then they would not have to illegally interogate 15 year old kids! Doing your job does not mean issuing summonses and making arrests to show force! How about simply having a CPOP officer down her that could bond with the community and the kids? So much more would happen if Officer O’rielly was assigned to the beat with out summons and arrests quotas

Ok I’ll remember that when I see your car or your house being broken into or when your Mother or sister is getting robbed. I’ll just put my head down and ignore whats going on BECAUSE I don’t want to be a RAT. This is the most ignorant approach to problems. If the cops (5-0) aren’t made aware of the problems in “DA HOOD” they cannot address the problem. If the kids or who every is stopped by the cops would just be respectful and if you weren’t doing anything wrong you have nothing to worry about. I think a RAT is used more by lowlife criminals to describe other lowlife criminals who talk to the cops. The cops need help to catch criminals and I have no problem telling them what I know or what I saw happen. We don’t have enough cops as it is and they need our help just as much as we need theirs.

putting a line of ? after a word doesn’t impress people , it just show’s you have nothing to say in response . I’m not so worried about the 61 grabbing kids for info as I am about South Brooklyn technical force showing up and just grabbing anyone . 61 has a feel for the beach and even thru the 61 is being pressured for results I think they could be more impartial them strangers who don’t know us and after they get what they want will disappear with a pat on the back from Lew . A lot more people know now that the idea for the skate park was implanted down here in order to relieve the problem in Marine park . Just like the ball fields from 277 to channel were cleand and fixed to relieve the day camp problem in Marine park . We lost white Island , we lost the weeds , we ask for a traffic light they give us lines . Now they want us to rat on each other . This is all being done for a reason , someone outside the beach is deciding what’s good for us . They have their own agenda and you and I aren’t part of it . please forgive the poor grammar but I’ve always felt it was better to speak from the heart rather the Polish a speech .

BSTF=Brooklyn South Task Force….and alot of those cops are from the area so they do know the beach..Your misunderstanding what I’m saying..I don’t want people to start RATTING on each other over BS example Calling DOB on your neighbor for putting a extension on his house…or calling sanitation on someone who dosen’t seperate paper and plastic..I don’t want the city to make money off the hard working people of Gerritsen Beach. But i don’t want he the hard working people of Gerritsen Beach to ignore crimes or feel scared to walk around. Alot of these kid are not kids 15,16,17 is old enough to know better. Not all the kids are bad they are bored and have no place to go but it dosen’t give them the right to do whatever they want. So if the cops stop them for drinking or being in the park after dark and can get info off the kids about other crimes I have no problem with that. BEEN THERE i wrote WHAT?????????? Because I have no idea WHAT your comment ment it sounds like your writing about something personal.

I know a few of the police officers that live inside Gerritsen beach , I asked two of them if they knew anyone in BSTF that lived inside the beach . They said no . but since know one could know everyone , then sure maybe there’s some that live in the beach . But a good Captain wouldn’t assign them down here in fear of putting their family in a uncomfortable position or that someone might say that the officer had a grudge against him which could cause embarrassment for the police and maybe having a good bust thrown out . so I guess we’re back to strangers coming down . I don’t know its just my option .
We do agree that boredom is not a get out of jail free card and that as far as I know there is no reason to be in the park after dusk . finished basements and extinctions , as long as its safe and doesn’t somehow become a problem to the community , I really don’t care . But that was not what the subject is here . could you define area . I had a guy once told me he lived in my area only to find out he lived on Utica and Flatlands . I guess it all how you look at it

Just so you know BSTF is a task force that responds to all the pct’s in Brooklyn south 60,61,62,63,66,67,68,69,70,71,72,76,and the 78 pct. so the chances of a cop living in Brooklyn south and working in the BSTF are very good I know 2 who work there and live in Marine Park. Task force responds to all Level 1 mobilizations(shootings, stabbings, riots, robberies) and are assigned to target chronic problems in pcts so the chances of them stopping kids in the park are very good. I understand that kids have nothing to do and your right it doesn’t give them a get out of jail free card. But these kids have to understaand if they hide in the weeds or parks and didn’t destroy anything it would not be a issue but they are destroying public property like benches, bus shelters starting fires in the weed and skate park they are lowering the quality of life and it’s there own fault the cops are “HARASSING” them. Cops respond to problems and emergencies they have better things to do than chase kids around the weeds and MAKE THEM RAT on each other. So if they stop destroying things and just hang out the cops will go away and no one will have to RAT on anyone and the cops can respond to real emergencies. AND I live in the area called the new section I moved here about 4years ago and I love it

Whoa, wait a minute, we are not talking about houses getting broken into or peoples Mothers or sisters being attacked. Read the piece of this blog titled LEW FIDLER WANTS TO ARREST YOUR KIDS. This is over the vandalism in the park etc., which I agree is a problem, but they are talking about arresting kids and bringing them in to be interrogated until someone gives up whoever lit the fire, moved the benches. I think that is BS. You have an arson squad, police who are paid to investigate, gather evidence etc. Arresting minors and bringing them in to be interrogated, lied to, scared out of their wits? So they will rat-yes RAT- their friends? Most of these kids aren’t bad. We are not talking about violent crimes against people. We’re talking about groups of kids hanging out and getting alittle out of hand sometimes. Probably only a couple of kids, (theres one in every crowd!) It’s part of growing up. And I would bet that the bottom line of this is that Lew Fidler has promised the people of Marine Park that he will do something about the overcrowding in the park in the summer with the camps. Thats what this whole big investment is really about. So he wants all the benches there when the buses start pulling up. I love Gerritsen Beach. I love our kids. I don’t want to see them manhandled and manipulated to make Lew Fidler look good.

Sorry but the cops are not here to solve the problem the will just produce numbers to make it look like they are doing their job, unfortunatelly many young kids will get caught up in minor things that we have all done when we were kids and will give their parents legal fees and records. Doing their job goes beyond that, all they need to do is have a permanant beat cop assigned here! Lets see they have numerous problems at Seba park but yet have we seen foot patrol there!!! What we have seen is an increase in parking summonses by the DOT! and during major events w have had Auxillary assigned. To me this just all means that we are not that important to the city.

No one cares about GB because you people don’t care about yourselves. The 61 tried very hard to help GB with the watch tower and on Halloween. All you did was criticize the need for the tower (which any other neighborhood would have loved to have) and when the GB kids were out in full force throwing eggs and potatoes at the cops NO ONE came to the cops defense. The parents and neighbors all stuck up for the kids and bad mouthed the cops. NOW YOU WANT THEM TO HELP YOU? I don’t think so, they moved on.

and yes i grew up here, but when i was a kid if you broke up the neighborhood and your parents found out about it they would like cry about there kids being arrested. They were to busy beating the common sense back into you.

Sorry anon, I was born and raised here. My family is here 70 years and I don’t want to see some jerk off polititian ruin this place. I don’t think “these little brats are ruining it”. You even say it yourself, ‘If you broke up the neighborhood and your parents found out….’. I agree with that. I don’t agree with them being stopped for no reason, lied to, have their words twisted, threaten them and /or arrest them and ruin their futures over nonsense. These kids are no different than we were once. A couple of bad apples? Probably. Bad parents? Definitly. Let’s help them out instead of looking to wreck their entire lives at 14.

Don’t want to get anyone mad but this all looks a little funny to me . We know most of the negative comments about Gerritsen beach come from people who live outside the beach . But what’s funny is that we never forced anyone to move down here . They came to live in Gerritsen Beach because it was and is a better place to live then were they were . I’m not saying go back to where you came but if someone who has a family going back 70 years here ,nicely says we should do something for our kids . I would think because of his long history with the beach and its problems we should do so . George go’s back at least that far and he also wants to do something for the kids . maybe the old timers know something ? .

I don’t care what the naysayers write from behind the shield of anonymity. When there is a problem, you do the best you can to solve it. How many of you can remember how bad graffiti was at one time, with every subway car scribbled from top to bottom and throughout. There were people who believed it could be changed. Was it eliminated? No, but it is a trickle today, by comparison. Of course it requires legal enforcement, as does the vandalism anywhere and everywhere. Our Councilman responded to the requests of people from this community when the section that is now Seba Avenue Park had become a dump. He has expended a lot of time and energy into acquiring money to build the park, and he is right, that those who are responsible for illegal acts should be dealt with “legally”. The other day, a young man was stopped by the NYPD and asked where he was coming from on Gerritsen Avenue. He wisely answered every question that was asked of him, and was sent on his way. Some of the wags have already said “they can’t do that”. “They” can do that, so I’m going to cite the instructions from–of all organizations, the ACLU–”What to do if you’re stopped by the police”–in a separate slot. In the meantime, we are proceeding with plans to develop programs to “enlighten” our youth.

“What to Do If Your’re Stopped By The Police”? The following is related to being stopped on the street. It is usually different e.g. in a car, at home, etc. The basic common sense rule is, “if you have nothing to hide” then you shouldn’t have a problem, “If you are stopped for Questioning”.
1. It’s not a crime to refuse to answer questions, but refusing to answer might make the police suspicious about you. If you are asked to identify yourself; you should give your name and address and identifying characteristics, if that is what is asked for (e.g. height, weight). They may be looking for someone who matches your description. Don’t get in an argument with the police. Remember, anything you cay can be used against you. Keep your hands where police can see them. Don’t run, don’t touch any police officer. Don’t resist, even if you are innocent. Don’t complain on the scene or tell police they’re wrong or that you are going to file a complaint. There is more, but the fact remains, if you have nothing to hide, why create a problem for yourself. If you want a copy in full, go to http://www.aclu-co.org

I love you George & wish there was more folks like you. But, I have to respectfully disagree about stopping kids without cause. Stop people that are observed commiting illegal acts & leave it at that. stopping kids for no reason is meant to intimidate, it serves no purpose in regards to the park.
