The Great Wall of Gerritsen

DSC_4576

What ever happened to the days of picket fences, iron fencing, or even stucco “fencing”? Now we have 6 foot cinder block walls acting as fences.

Although this home is not alone, there are others properties that have similar “features”, this is one that stands out.

I totally get the need for privacy and security these days but I'd be more afraid that it would become canvas for graffiti. It's only a matter of time I am sure.

But I do understand the need for people to build walls to keep the monsters out.

Maybe the residents should get together and have a mural painted before it's loaded with grafitti.

      Murals are for ghettos

Hot debate. What do you think? Thumb up 4 Thumb down 2

Rap and R&B Themed murals are for Ghettos. Not all Murals are like that.

How about the 9/11 Memorial Murals on Ave V and Nostrand Ave? Those are awesomely done and professional murals.

It's a pretty small wall but maybe a painting of waterscape and bridge visible from the end of Gerritsen Ave would be appropriate. Pretty soon it's going to be a new landscape with a new bridge and commemorating the old bridge from the 30's would be kind of cool.

How about simple logic. When a person, or group of people are confronted with a petty obstacle to their continued pattern of behavior they are not likely to stop that pattern of behavior. Especially if there are other motives for that behavior. They are lightly to laugh off the attempt and continue to behave however they wish to the dismay of the property owner. That wall is not tall enough to prevent anyone from tossing garbage into the homeowners yard. If that's really the reason they built the wall it was a poor one.

Perhaps there are other reasons that the owner installed this type of wall but since the owner hasn't publicly announced those reasons the community can only be left speculating. It could be for something as simple as privacy. Though that too is a poorly served function for that wall, as anyone over 5 feet tall can poke their head over it.

In any case, there is either a logical reason for the home owner building a wall that's out of character with the rest of the the community, or there is no logical reason. If there is no logical reason, then…"It makes no sense…"

And now they can throw the garbage over the wall and no one will have to see it. Thanks so much for building the wall, and keeping Gerritsen Beach Beautiful.

At least buy a couple of gallons and paint the wall – it looks like a construction site.

How about making it look nice at least maybe some paint or stucco. Maybe that is what they will do eventually I don't know how long the wall has been up but lets give them the benefit of the doubt and maybe once it starts getting warmer they will make it look better.

Obviously they have very valuable stuff in there and need to protect it. At least do what they do in mill basin and get the more decoative block and top it with limestone cap.

Fear not ,if the concrete footing under the wall isn't right it'll fall down anyway.

Never mind the fences remember the lots we all had bike paths in to get from one block to the other? Nobody had a fence back then! That was the real "Beach". We never had to ride our bikes on the courts or avenue we just had our short cuts thru the lots. We had so much fun! Sometimes I still wish the beach was like that.
