The Future of Seba Avenue Park

At the January meeting of the Gerritsen Beach Property Owners, at the request of the 4 million dollar man Councilman Lew Fidler, Brooklyn Parks Chief of Staff Martin Maher along with the Seba Avenue Park  design team, came to present their plans for the expansion of Seba Avenue Park.

The expansions main underlying theme/focus is on nature and water.

In total, 5 additional areas are being added to the left of existing Seba Avenue Park. Two spray shower areas,  two new playground areas and the comfort station.

The water areas are designed with 20 bent-pipe like objects, 6 of which will spray water. The spray water will be on a day/night timer and also be push button activated.

According to the architect We are getting all higher-end materials for this project including: the piping, blue stone pavement, colored and textured concrete pavement, benches, etc.

The expanded area will still be surrounded by a three foot fence exactly like the existing fencing.

The Comfort Station of Seba Avenue Park will begin in the spring and construction will last from nine months to a year.

Here is the rundown.

It’s the swings stupid! The community has been asking for swings for a long time now. A really long time. All parents really want are swings for their slightly older kids not the TWO baby swings that are there. However, by design tot playgrounds are just meant for tots and NYC Parks cannot think design outside of those guidelines.

As for adding swings themselves parks did explained: that swings in require space -  a lot of space – as per their safety requirements. Although they said they were UNAWARE of the community wanting swings, they said they are putting in as much climbing and playground equipment as they can with the real estate available.

GerritsenBeach.net is gravely concerned for what this will do to the Gerritsen Beach Little League and what this projects long term effects are for the neighborhood. I’m not talking about inconvenience during construction. I’m talking about Larry Veiling field being used for other means by a significant amount of people.

Mike Lavery Deputy Director of Capital Projects Of Brooklyn
David Martin Chiefs of Design and Construction in Brooklyn
Paul Kinnaskas (guessed spelling) Architecht

At the Property Owner's meeting last night, I specifically heard it stated that the Larry Veiling Ballfield would not be effected in any way by the second phase of Seba Park. It was also stated that for safety reasons they may close the ballfield area for a day or so during construction. The Park's Department and Councilman Fidler stayed at the meeting last night ready to answer questions and hear the Community's concerns. When given the opportunity to comment on the parks design very few said anything yet later there was lots to say. Councilman Fidler left with the Park's Dept. after he explained he had further things to discuss with the design team about Seba and other parks in the area.

I phoned the Councilman first thing this morning to tell him how important it is to the residents of Gerritsen to have more swings at Seba Park. The Councilman informed me that he was shocked when he realized the Park's Dept. missed the fact that swings were to be an integral part of phase two of Seba. Today, the Councilman reassured me that as many as 16 swings would be added to the Seba Park design. Fidler directed Park's to amend their plans and include the swings right after he left with them last night. Bravo Councilman for your commitment to Parks and the residents you represent

Bus shelters, park benches, skate board ramps, defaced or destroyed. It boggles the mind that the city would go to such a great expense to install "higher end material"? It's a joke. They'd have to have a 24 hour guard on a quad to patrol the area.

well here they come~ the big yellow school buses all summer long with camp etc. This will no longer be a small park for area kids….its going to become a "destination" park. Pretty soon Larry Veling field will become what Marine Park fields have become and Gerritsen BB will have to stand in line with the others to get field time!!! You wanted it…You'll get it…….

Any explanartion why GB couldn't use the fenced-in area behind Veling field to put in a removable pitching machine/batting cage? Know it really burned the GB coaches that the Parks Dept. wouldn't allow that, even thouguh they would've maintained it and taken the Juggs gun in and out themselves. It was a very simple thing the community would've benefited from and maintained themselves and instead we get a high end expensive plan. Suspect no pol could claim credit.

Will you stop with the parks already , how about some other improvements in our neighborhood, and look at all this money they are spending on us for a new park but still not traffic light! I think that's because the park will not only be for us but all of Brooklyn that is why they can spend the money, the traffic light at the school is for our children NOT all of Brooklyn.. So now who are they doing all of this for looks like it is not us

Many years ago, under the watch of an entirely different board of directors of the property owners association, the door was opened to the politicians downtown. The intentions may have been to get back a piece of the pie, but there is no such thing as a free lunch, even when it is only pie. During that time, as is every politician's ideal, they were given one photo-op after another, and with each visit, they saw something you had that they or their other constituents did not . Before long, winterized bungalows and cottages took on new meaning, and outrageous assessed values: Somebody has to pay for those free lunches. Then the young Turks rebelled and started another organization. It has, and continues to do many good things for the community. At one point, their leaders sought a solution to get rid of the illegal, unsightly, unhealthy, dumping near Seba Avenue. One solution considered was a park for the children of the neighborhood. They turned to their elected representatives and they soon found they were getting their wish. Now, it has become obvious that the park is available to everyone, not just the local neighborhood. Now you know how the native Americans must have felt when their local source of crabs and clams and fish was no longer theirs alone. Not to mention, what they considered their exclusive territorial bounds. If you want action, participate in the process before someone else makes a decision with which you don't agree. Without dialogue, your representatives are left to make the decisions for you. Most elected officials are trying to do what is best, but that doesn't mean they are right 100% of the time. You have to participate.

You make some good points but how can a community participate when the plans are drawn up and cast in stone and only then presented to the community. And just to play devil's advocate, why do GB residents think they are different from any other community in the city. I live in MP and when my kids were younger I wanted to take them to the park on a weekday and see my neighbors, instead, I was greeted by those stupid yellow camp buses. The weekend? You can't even get into the playground. GB is being primed to accept the MP overflow. It would be naive to think that all that money is being spent tp provide an oasis that only GB residents are entitled to enjoy.

Seba Park- a place for parents and grandparents to take little kids…"let's go to the park!" For this purpose we now have one small slide, a merry-go-round and two, count them, two swings. This for1.5 million. Now an incredibly expensive expansion which encroahes upon our Little League field, which has been a genuine asset to GB for almost 60 years. A few more swings, maybe a jungle gym would be nice. Comfort station, sprinklers – 4 million tax dollars???
Instead of a " build it and they will come" attitude, let's consider the wishes of the residents. Many find it difficult or impossible to attend the meetings. Can a voting forum be set up on this site?

I agree Ray. As someone who works nights I am frustrated by the fact that I can not have any imput. It's enough. They should put the money into refurbishing 277 park that already has a large area already paved with nothing in it and is overcrowded on nice days. Fix the sprinklers up there. Even if Seba park is guarded and protected from vandalism for a while, eventually it will be destroyed. And then everyone will say we ALL shit where we eat. And to tell you the truth, if it turns into a destination for camps etc., I'll vandalize and destroy it myself, or applaud those who do. It is just the nature of some young teens who are frustrated with boredom. There are so many ways to better spend 4 million dollars. It would be better spent on our streets and courts desperately in need of paving or granting even a portion of that to a group like the Cort Club, The O'Connel-Newel youth center to actually do something for these kids that are 12-16 years old and are floundering. Hell, if we have to we could look to Bed Sty and East Flatbush for idas for youth programs, that catch at least some of the kids who parents are failing to do their jobs. Fund that.

What about the dead end Bulk Heads Majority of the Galvanized Steel is rotted out and I know the one on Beacon CT is about ready to fall over if somebody leans or sits on it. I'd rather see my Tax Money go to the reconstruction of the Bulkheads then for a Park that will get destroyed. I mean come on Canton Ct some of the houses are about to become water front property. Hell my SUV damn near bottomed out coming off of Eaton Ct at Seba Ave when was the last time our streets were seriously looked at and inspected.

To hell with the parks fix our Community Streets first.

From what I learned from the meeting, there will be some wonderful improvements to the park for the little ones. The park has meager amenities as of now. There will be a new seating area for the parents, a connection to the future bathroom, a fun and artistic spray shower (just look at that image…. i can't wait to see it!) I can't imagine the kids not enjoying and two new jungle gyms for the kids to climb all over.

It's nice to criticize the improvements being made by looking at what it might not have that people want, but everything is a compromise when it comes to community design. I spoke with the council member's office and he has assured us that swings will be added at some point, but because of the small space available now, it isn't possible. If the community wants more swings, more swings we shall have. Also, though close proximity to the baseball field, the field will remain in tact.

As was said during the meeting, high end materials will be used, increased play for the kids, an area for parents and grandparents to sit, enjoy and be able to watch their children in all areas and a lot of plants that will make the park fit in with the landscape of marine park.

I'm certain that the parks department has the best interests of the community at heart. I hope the vandals in the neighborhood do not destroy this very expensive expansion.
