Property Owners Meeting Roundup

On Wednesday January 6th (and every first Wednesday) the property owners held their meeting in the St. James basement. Here is the rundown.

61st Precinct Report:

There was some tire slashings on the morning of January 1st on Gotham Avenue. Residents of Gotham Ave who were at the meeting did not know others were effected are are filing a report.

Seba Avenue Park was the main agenda which because of it’s importance will be a separate post.

As for the fire: Jim Donovan wants to thank the entire neighborhood for their “unbelievable” response that they have received. They have received so many donations and are thankful.

There will be a fundraiser for the Hayes family on:

Tamaqua Marina
$25 at the door
January, 30 2010
Cash Bar, DJ, Live Band, Food, Raffles

There is also going to be a separate fundraiser for Kathy Winters whom was also visiting the home

February, 13th 2010
at the Cort Club
Details to be determined

Then what proceed was heated discussion about Seba Avenue Park. The Status (or lack there of) of our fire hydrants and more the same nonsense about GB.net being bad.

There are some good things to mention and some good suggestions that came from the discussion.

Instead of wanting all of our hydrants replaced/repaired maybe a strategic handful can be winterized.

Imagine if Lacon Ct was built as planned with it’s 50-60 units then imagine the fire response for a fire on that block.

The meeting was kinda reprimanded by CB15 Chair Theresa Scavo whom is at 99% of the GBPOA meetings. She explained that she has been coming to our meetings and at every meeting, every time, without fail the community yells that they want swings at seba avenue park but no one spoke up when presented with the designers and artwork.

She went on to tell everyone that the design that shown is not written in stone, and that this meeting was to have the community approve the concept however only one spoke up.

Instead of the skate park we could have had the streets fixed! that is such BS! Look how long it took them to come down the beach and even look at the problem . Please i can't stand the bs that comes out of some peoples mouth!

With all due respect, to CB15 Chairperson Scavo, the young parents present did speak up about about the need for more than 2 toddler swings at the park. They were explicit enough about occasions when several parents with children were at the park, and the problem it presented. In the past, we have made known our concerns about Seba Avenue Park and the lack of swings. Councilman Fidler arranged for the Parks Dept. design team to hear that for themselves, and they did; without shouting or malice. With that, Councilman Fidler stated that he was leaving the meeting early to discuss the matter with the design team. As our representative, we expect that of him, and to date, he has not let us down. In conversation with the Councilman today, he gave his assurance that there will be ample additional swings. At our Board meeting, we developed our strategy relative to the overall problems concerning Seba Ave. Park; including vandalism. We will discuss and coordinate these plans with each of our Representatives between now and our next meeting , Wed. Feb. 3rd. Had it been in the best interest of our community, we could have packed the house with more bodies, but those who did speak are extremely active in each community organization and the Parents Association. The "Comfort Station", as was made clear, is a 'given', despite the concerns many express about further vandalism and criminal activity. We have already begun to plan for crossing that bridge. Our presence will be known at both CB 15 and CB 18 and both the 61st and 63rd Precinct in the near future and thereafter. Also, contrary to the opinion of some residents, there are many young families establishing roots in our community. That said, it is always a special pleasure to see CB 15 Chairperson Theresa Scavo at our meetings.

Well how about something like the park on Linden Boulevard and New Jersey avenue, meaning how about a tall fence and Lights. I work in the what used to be the Ghetto and most if not all of the parks have high fences and lights, they are also maintained by the parks dept until dusk where they are locked up but still lit up. Ironically the residents there did not get their taxes raised because most dont have to pay taxes and the ones that do dont pay much and get more. As for the skate park all it does is attract outsiders who come back at night and vandalize. No one spoke up because we will not get what we want anyway. Beisides the fact that most if not all of gerritsen beach residents have to work and do not have the convenience of time to protest or attend meetings!

How about the Hydrants! Well this is nothing new to Gerritsen beach. To the best of my knowledge being a former fire fighter, at the end of the season the hydrants need to be pumped out because the water above the plunger will freeze making it impossible to get water. Now the fire department who uses these hydrants says that it is not their responsibility to maintain the hydrants, but they use them? It was told to me that the DEP is supposed to maintain them. When there is a fire we need water!!!!! This has been an age old problem here and many houses have burnt down due to lack of water! What should we do?

I agree we need persistant follow-up on the hydrant issue. Not winterizing these hydrants is a danger to this community, why isn't this being done – is it a cost issue? Is it the law? What's the story?
