Listen up and Listen good.
Gerritsen Beach is seriously angry and residents are not going to take it any more. In the works is what I am calling an “all out offensive” against the vandals who are dismantling in OUR park.
To stop this vandalism “once and for all”, Councilman Lew Fidler is bringing together the 61st, the 63rd and Brooklyn South to combat the vandalism at Seba Avenue Park.
The Councilman is calling upon residents of Gerritsen Beach to be as angry and upset at “local children” as he is and take action. He is asking residents to figure out a way to stop the vandalism at Seba Avenue Park. Which will all be discussed ASAP.
He cited that one of the major problems is the dividing line of the 61st and 63rd precincts.
Here is the thing (vandals should take close note of what is saying). We are a small community and people with positions within the community ALREADY KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Now a city councilman is bringing together three precincts because of the fires, broken trees, benches, carved swastikas that YOU caused. At this point it may already be too late for some of you the rest can head this warning: NO MORE DESTROYING THE PARK and make sure no one else is going to.
There are going to be no more warnings, it sounds like lots of summonses and arrests with a massive show of force.

Playing the 61st Precint and the 63rd Precint is a game we played 50 years ago, Maybe it is time to request a change in the line of demarkation, Maybe it could be moved to Flatbush Ave. The existing boundary makes Gerritsen Beach a "marginal" neighborhood – both literally and figuratively. The excuse provided in the video reminds me of Abbott and Costello – "Whose on First". James Fetter

James Fetter may not be on location, but he is on target… The boundaries, as they now stand, are also coincident with two different Community Boards (15 &18). City Council would have to decide on changing the boundaries, and there is a question about the broad area the 61st now covers away from the beach. .One thing I suggested to Councilman Fidler, only today, is something that struck me while at the Barnes & Noble book store in Union Square. Throughout the store there is the presence of NYPD officers in uniform. There is a currently a "contract" between the city and businesses that allows 'off-duty' NYPD officers to work in uniform. Why can't that same contract apply to putting NYPD off-duty officers on the beat or in difficult access areas? Surely something could be arranged. Granted, they would not have the indoor warmth and comfort of the eating area, , but don't they sign-up in the first place, 'to protect the public". Offer incentives, e.g. those with "quad driving experience": an exciting chance of the chase.

Gee George, get your facts straight before you start knocking NYPD officers. You need to get with it. The "contract" you are referring to allows PRIVATE companies to pay for NYPD officers to work as security in their NYPD uniform. Therefore, if they are nice and warm in the comfort of the eating area it is because Barnes & Noble is PAYING them not the city. If they used your logic to put "off duty" officers on the beat who is going to pay them? They are not volunteering on their days off you know. "Surely something could be arranged" ?? Why are you so sure ? Pls think before you bash. And no, I am not an officer, but I sure hope one will be around if I need them.

George, great idea but it is extremely expensive. When off duty NYPD Officers are hired as many are in our area banks the daily cost is very high. It also opens the liability issue. What the residents should be considering is a Neighborhood Block Watch. You could get volunteers from the community to patrol for 2 hour shifts at times convenient to them. You could also employ the elderly or homebound who could watch from a window for unusual activity. Many years ago, all the NYC Precincts worked with the Communities to form Block Watches. Any questionable activity is reported directly to the NYPD. This would cost nothing and allow the residents an opportunity to give back to the community they call home.

Theresa a Volunteer Patrol? Please do not take this as a personal attack on you. Its great that your submitting Idears on how to make the beach better and safer. What is a Volunteer going to do "Hey you kids get out of there". All you are going to get in return is F.U. as they laugh at you. NYPD has Volunteers they are called Auxiliary. But then again they can't do anything and if they could do something they are too intimated to do anything. They should stop dumping City money into something that they are only going to destroy further. You want a better neighborhood start hitting these kids with big fines and watch how there parents do a 180 on the way they raise there kids. $250.00 Summons for being in the park after dark is fine in my book. Don't want to give me your name get in the wagon and we will bring you down as a John/Jane Doe till we know who you are and double the fine for wasting our time. Run and we catch you double fine along with misdomeanor obstruction charge. Better yet just assign a K-9 Unit to the area and send the dog after the kids let them run now. But let me guess thats tooooooo GESTAPO. Bernie Mac had it right America doesn't beat there kids enough.

Dan two things came to mind reading this article, growing up in the Beach my friends and I knew two things foe sure, if we seen coming out of the Park or weeds after dark, our parents knew before we got home, if the cops were involved we could count on a slap off the top of the head from the Patrolman and a beating from our parents(dad) when we got home. There was also a tradition of putting DEADBEAT NAMES in the store window if you were a chronic check bouncer or shop lifter. So maybe its time to start NAMING NAMES, , put these teens and thier parents on the spot…….

So true Joe! Gone are those days. You buy cigarettes in Old Dutch (before there were age laws) and your mom already knew. (Incidentally, the trick was you had to buy the same brand you would get for your parents.)
Kids are not afraid of their parents in any way. I was never afraid my parents would kill me but I was very afraid I would disappoint them and that was far worse.

Thank you, Theresa… There is another idea, which we will not publicize, to provide security for the planned Comfort Station. We are looking into the legality, first; and approval on the part of a local organization. In the meantime, we will be meeting with the Councilman to follow-up with both the 61st and 63rd precincts. The question arises, whether the grafitti on the dislocated (stolen) benches was reported to the section of the NYPD who have a record of the "tags" used by those who deface property? Not too long ago, when grafitti appeared in several locations in the beach, the 'tagger' was identified as being from Manhattan Beach. Not to absolve our locals of blame, but they too have recorded tags.

I'm working on something…
Technically speaking the old comments broke and nothing was working I was forced to do something.
This is it for now.
Can I suggest using the same service Sheepshead Bites got? Disqus? It lets you login using multiple methods, Facebook, Twitter, Open ID, etc.
There are a few posters who comment on both sites (I've seen Lisanne, Bagels, Brooklyn Q and others). It gives more options to all your users and for those that do sign up all their comments are sorted in one place.
It also gives the area a more united feel. We are neighbors afterall :-p.

My apology, I was aiming at the city and hit the wrong target. I had coffee with the officer who explained the program to me, after I inquired of him, about NYPD officers throughout the Barnes & Noble store. I think of being a police officer as a profession, and they are underpaid.. Which is why many of them have to take second jobs. The program was started in 1998, and based on an article by Joanne Wasserman, in the Daily News, in 2003, the program allows officers to moonlight in uniform–providing security for stores, neighborhood associations….The PBA President, said at that time, the companies were paying for security "that New York City should be doing." The City charges "administrative fees" for the service, that has proven to be a financial benefit to the city. How about using some of that profit to increase our security needs. Another thought, I'll toss out: is along the ideas of volunteers, as has been suggested. How about "Adopt a Cop". Here in Gerritsen Beach, we have many NYPD.officers. Maybe we can find a way to get them to work in their own community in uniform. As for pay? We'll ask our representatives to direct some of that earmark money they are adept at getting when there is a need.

I like the idea of “adopt a cop” but most cops I know don't even like there neighbors knowing that they are cops, so having them patroling the neighborhood would probably not work, but maybe someone from outside the beach would be a possiblilty

Wait!! so you are suggesting to pay for an officer to patrol the park? Sorry George but this one is wrong, if we were a jewish community they would have a command center parked on the avenue or atleast a car assigned to the park. this is what we pay taxes for. Every temple I know of has a car and 2 officers posted in front since December.

If the vandalism and actions of these kids warrant such an outrage, why not have a rally. On a Fri. or Sat. night gather up people who are fed up with the way they are treating the park and take it to the park ITSELF ! Cause the warm weather isss coming.
I'm no angel and practically grew up in Gerritsen Park. My mother chased me out of there more nights than I would like to remember. I don't think these kids are mean, possibly just a little selfish. They more likely than not don't get that littering is infantile and destroying property for shits n giggles is moronic.
I'm not that keen on the actual things that transpire up there, cause I stopped hanging out up the park about 4 years ago(<- sarcasm). But instead of waiting for the cops, the cops the cops, why not make it your initiative to go up there? Am I giving these kids too much credit?
Why not take a night when schools off the next day and go up and try to talk to these kids? Has anyone gotten together and even tried that?
