Aren’t you excited? !It’s your chance to run for community board!!! Do you know what this means? If you serve maybe you can make sure our hydrants are winterized!
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is calling on all Brooklynites interested in advocating for issues important to their communities—including land use, zoning, the City Budget, and municipal service delivery—to apply for representation on their local Community Board. Current members are also encouraged to apply for reappointment. The deadline to submit an application is Monday, February 22, 2010.
“Community boards are truly the heart and soul of municipal government in Brooklyn and New York City—they are the entry point for New Yorkers who love their neighborhoods and wish to be involved in the planning and development process,†said BP Markowitz.
There are 59 Community Boards throughout the City—18 in Brooklyn—each comprised of up to 50 unsalaried members appointed by the borough president. Board members are selected by the borough presidents from among active, involved people of each community, with an effort made to assure that every neighborhood is represented. Board members must reside or have some other significant interest in the community.
For more information and an application, visit www.brooklyn-usa.org and click on the “Brooklyn Community Board Applications†button.

I believe only God can make sure hydrants work in the winter. When the frigid weather comes in, hydrants freeze. When they are thawed…as they have been most of this winter by FDNY unit……they freeze up again ….Fortunately FDNY pumper trucks( engine company trucks) carry about 500 gallons of water. Gerritsen Beach Vollies also have a pumper truck that carries 500 gallons of water.

@, God has nothing to do with Fire Hydrants freezing over. That would be quite difficult considering she doesn’t exist.
The city is responsible for keeping Hydrants working and unfrozen.

@Arthur B, I think the existance of God is a little out of the scope of this conversation and blog. Wow, harsh reply.

I'm not sure what so harsh about the truth. If people insist on believing in fantasy that's up to them. But when they hold their hands up to the air and cry that god didn't save them it's hardly out of the scope of the conversation.
The FDNY and The City of New York is responsible for making sure all emergency services are in working order, 24/hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year. That's the responsibility we trust them with.
Someone didn't do their job properly and as a result a family has lost their home, tons of valuables, countless memories and so much more. It's an appalling thing to read someone say "Only God can make the Hydrants work". It's just ridiculous.

I think you took it too literally, by saying "only God can make the hydrants work", the poster clearly meant "We have no control over the weather". You turned it into some odd philosophical statement. In fact you even assigned God a sex. I just thought it was weird,

Thank you for listening. I am so glad that you understood my post.about God controlling the weather. This is a very cold winter and the hydrants are mostly frozen> The thawing trucks have been thawing for weeks.

God doesn't control the weather. The entire planet is an interactive and interdependent ecosystem. Local weather can be affected by thousands of factors. There is no god. Period.

Betty, you may not know who I am, and that's fine, in the scope of this conversation that doesn't really matter. I reposted with my real name because unlike some other posters I'm not going to hide behind anonymity when posting something people may not agree with or like to read.
You may not know me, but you know my opinion, and that's whats important here.

Interesting that the Board members don’t have to actually LIVE in the community that they represent. Just have significant interest. I didn’t realize that…

Does anyone know if it is even possible to stop a fire hydrant from freezing? Is it possible to defrost one? Im ignorant of this, obviously not a fireman.

They are supposed to be checked & drained in the fall to make sure they don’t freeze in the winter.

@, But how could they NOT freeze with weather like we are having? I would assume that there must be water right up to the valve in the hydrant? Or is the valve supposed to keep water below the ground freezing level?

These comments are getting weird. With all the opinions and strong voices shared on this site, I would expect the applications for this area to completly overwelm the community board offices.

To the best of my limited knowledge the water pipes are below the frost line, this is my we get water in our homes all year round. On a FIRE hydrant the shaft is supposed to be empty and that is why the plunger or shutoff is way below ground. If it is used during the year and does not drain as designed then the water above the frost line will freeze preventing us from getting water in the winter. If the valve below ground is faulty then the hydrant will leak and during winter it will freeze. I hope this helps
