Devastating Fire at 77 Bevy at Channel Avenue!

DSC_3724

There was a two alarm fire at 77 Bevy Ct at Channel Avenue at the home of Tom and Phylis Hayes.

Unfortunately, most of the are hydrants were all frozen including the one directly across the street from the home. Firefighters were rushing lines from as far away as Gerritsen Avenue to supply water. News 12 reported the first seven fire hydrants firefighters tried to use were frozen solid.

Both the P.S. 277 Parents Association and the Cort Club are accepting donations for the Hayes Family. At this time should be Clothes, Cash or Gift Cards. Please, if anybody has any other suggestions, please post them.

PLEASE HELP THE HAYES! It is cold out and they need clothes, cash, anything! They have three children Lindsay age 19, Thomas age 10, and Gianna age 5. Please help in any way you can.

My son, who is 11 and also named Thomas, like the 10 year old, said that he would like to donate some of his toys. Does anyone know Thomas Hayes personally and know what things toys he would like? My son will also be going through his clothes to make donations. Please post what sizes the children are.

I suggest cash or gift cards might be a viable option so that they may be able to purchase what they want and need. Maybe it might help the children to put aside this horrible tragedy while shopping for some new things. Jimmy do you think that we could put something together quick at the court club?

Lindsay, So glad everbody is ok. Please post your correct size as well. I am the Treasurer of the Parent Association of PS277 and we will be collecting donations too. We are sending out a letter tomorrow to the whole school. I spoke to your Mom and understand she feels terrible and doesn’t want to put anybody out. As I think you posted above, this is a great Community. This is what friends, family, neighbors, neighborhoods and even people who don’t know all you guys do for each other. We are all devasted like you and feel your pain. We will all try to make this easier for you guys in any way possible. Take care.

    dry hydrants that don’t freez

Go to this web site —http://www.firehydrant.org/info/northstar.html

I’m happy to hear that the family is well & safe.
I will spread the word & do what I can to help.

I don’t have knowledge in this area but the web site above may help in the future of hydrants freezing, IM also thinking the if it would be possible to some how fit a hot water line from a house to a hydrant to keep it from freezing during the winter.

I think its time to have wall hydrants, like they have in New York city. Where there is a hydrant, convert it to a wall hydrant at the nearest house.

      • Steve G

@Dewrock, If you think for a minute that this administration, aka King Bloomberg, is gonna spend one dollar to install fire hydrants that don’t freeze, or increase fire safety for this city in any way would cost a penny, forget it. He has already closed 6 fire companies and plans on chopping another 16-25 next year. And just recently as last month, in a scarcely publicized move, he reduced the staffing on all engine companies in the city to save money(except for 11 out of 210 companies)to only FOUR Firefighters per engine. Beside the frozen hydrants, you can bet that the reduced staffing also delayed getting water on that fire. This should also serve as a reminder to everyone to install smoke detectors in your home if you don’t have them, and if you do, check and replace the batteries. Have an escape plan with your children. Never go back inside to retrieve possessions. Thank God there were no fatalities. This time. Prayers go out to the Hayes family on their terrible day.

I was not aware of the other family that lived there. No one has mentioned them until the post I just read. What about their information, sizes, needs, etc. There should also be something set up for them. And what about the house next door, did it just suffer melted siding, or do they need help also. Please someone let us know. We want to help everyone who suffered here. This is a great tragedy to all who are involved. I pray for God’s Blessings on all of them.

What I want to know is what is the city going to do about the frozen fire hydrants? The fire department got there quickly and the fire would have been put out a lot sooner if the hydrants were not frozen.

To the Haye’s family: Very sorry about your loss, but grateful the members of your family got out safely. In January, 1971, we had a similar fire, in which my brother saved our mother (I was living in Nashville) but he got trapped and died, after getting her out onto the porch roof. The people of Gerritsen Beach responded so kindly, in every way, I have always wanted to give something back to our community.

As of noon today, Tuesday, the GBProperty Owners has raised money for you, and hopefully by tomorrow night’s meeting, we will increase the amount substantially.

In the meantime, I had a call from Gerry Gramlich, to pass on to you, that the St. James Thrift Shop is open to you to choose anything you want, at no cost. There are many new/unused items of clothing and household items. I left the number and person to call at the Cort club.

Tom Hayes, Sr., I am extending an invitation to you to go to Ft. Hamilton with me on Wednesday or Thursday to buy you any clothing you need. We can also look for items for your wife and children.

@George Broadhead, It never suprises me how often through the years Gerritsen Beach has banded together in times of need, such as this instance. Simply put, its what we do.

Mr. Broadhead, your message brought tears to my eyes with the level of kindness and generosity you just put into a few simple sentences. My heart breaks for Phyllis, Tommy, their kids and the individuals living upstairs, and next door, but with support from people like yourself, we’ll have them on their feet in no time. It warms my heart to say that I am a part of such an amazing community.

Heard about this through relatives who live in the neighborhood. Thinking about school supplies – are they needed? Thinking about photographs too. If those have been lost, anyone who knows the folks from that house should look through their own pictures – especially sports, dance lessons, parties – for pictures that the Hayes house members are in and get copies made for them.

I suggest that we all call 311 and email or write the mayor about the fire hydrants not being serviced for the problem of freezing this year. In prior years, the FDNY came around and drained our hydrants. Not this year. Is it the budget cuts?? I don’t know. In any event – our hydrants are different from the rest of the city, in that they are plugged to prevent sea water from entering. Other hydrants have drains. Please make a fuss about this – we are all at risk.

      @Diane DeWitt,
hi….after calling 311 at your suggestion I was informed that this is DEP RESPONSIBILITY (keeping hydrants running. ) I really feel that the news media should be notified!

I got the run around from 311 – DEP is only responsible for faulty hydrants – so they put me through to FDNY dispatch he said he never heard of a Thawing Unit – he gave me a #718 999 2000 which is FDNY headquarters. I emailed the mayors office at NYC.gov., waiting for reply. Something must be done. It's like a cop without bullets in his gun!

Donation to follow. My thoughts and prayers are with them – my son goes to school with Tommy (Nicholas Negron) and is very sad and asked his Mommy if there’s a way we can help so we will!

I sent out 500 letters today to each and every family who has a child in PS277. We are not asking for clothes. we specifically asked for cash or gift cards. We are trying to think both short term needs and long term needs. Trying to think like a person who has just lost everything in a fire is not only depressing but down right draining. I’m thinking immediate clothes great but cash and gift cards good for hats, gloves, boots, bedding, undergarments, household stuff, etc. Hopefully between all of us, we will get it all covered. Somebody said it above somewhere and I’ll say it again for everybody, makes me proud to be a Gerritsen Beach Resident. Donations can also be dropped off with the Security Guard of PS 277 or myself if I am in the the PA office.

I knew Tom Hayes Sr. in the late 70′s and 80′s in Colorado. This is devastating news. Gerritsen Beach really does rock. I could feel the love in the community when I first visited there in about 1978. I have never seen such an outpouring of love, help, concern anywhere. And people say New Yorkers are mean. MY ass.. Well done GB. Well Done.
Sending a donation thru pay pal, sending my love and prayers to Tom and his family. Please, if you can be sure he sees this, I’d appreciate it. It’s been a loooong time.

I have had my dealings with insurance companies. They will not go after teh city or fire departments, but they will find any and every excuse in the book in order not to pay. My house was partially burnt by a tenant and the insurance company decided not to pay on technicality. If the insurance company will not pay the family siting the inadequate responce or frozen fire hydrants or something else, the family would have to sue the city (and they will probably win). Again, I am so sorry for what happened.

WAIT!! are they still called FIRE hydrants or dep hydrants to the best of my knowledge they are not there nor designed for water supply for drinking, filling your pool, or laundry. We do need to make a huge stink about this! We have had this problem numerous times, THE HYDRANTS NEED TO BE DRAINED AND MAINTAINED!!! Maybe the vollies need a pump if they do not have one and in the fall the hydrants should be drained, and checked cause obviously the city aint gonna do it.

WAIT!! are they still called FIRE hydrants or dep hydrants to the best of my knowledge they are not there nor designed for water supply for drinking, filling your pool, or laundry.

So does anyone know what the fire department plans to do to avoid frozen hydrants going forward? I don't know how common frozen hydrants are, or wther or not this can be avoided. This is a BIG danger for the entire community. We need answers.

I don't know what the family's plans are when they are ready for furniture, but I have a great well cared for compact solid medium oak lighted combo wall unit/entertainment center with a slot that can fit at least up to a 27" flat screen TV that I would be happy to donate. I just need someone to pick it up ASAP. Please let me know if there is any interest and I can provide a picture.
