Although we’ve covered this before, its worth saying it again:
A open parking space, is never your spot! Even if you have to walk UPHILL BOTH WAYS, against the wind, and in 12 feet of snow to get to your car. So, Get over it.
After this past weekends snow storm some in the the community, keeping with the community and Christmas spirit put out cones and even patio chairs to protect what is rightfully their parking space.

We all know its not righfully our parking space BUt when you spend hours breaking your back to get your car out to go to work or shop, it can be very upsetting to come home & find someone who was too lzy to clear a spot in the spot you cleaned. Its just not nice to do that.

@,
I second that. Be it the law or not, if I dug it out, that spot is mine until there is a reasonable amount of meltage. That’s common decency law, and I dare you to try and challenge it.

If I dug my car out & came home to find another car parked in it should I not park in the next open spot? Should I have to dig out another spot? NO ONE OWNS A PARKING SPOT IN THE STREET. Simple.

@,
I agree that throughout the year the fighting over spots in this neighborhood is ridiculous, and that you don’t own a spot however in times of heavy snow such as this why should I have to dig out 2, 3 or 4 spots when you could easily do the same. I’m not referring to visitors to the block, just homeowners who are lazy and wait for other people to do the work for them.

@,
Oh come on Anonymous. You broke your back digging out your car because you wanted to use it. The person who took “your†spot had to also dig out a car. Even if it wasn’t against the law, it’s still not a good neighborly practice to section out parts of the public streets as your own. Another
un-neighborly practice I observed is multi-car families jockeying their cars around their house to preserve a spot for one of their family members to have when they come home. This kind of practice is bad for community relations and can escalate into feuds between neighbors.

You missed the point, my point was it wasn’t my spot to protect. It is a city street & as soon as I leave that spot anybody who comes along is entitled to park there. Like it or not GB is NOT a private neighborhood & there are no reserved spots, even if you dug that spot out. Saving a spot with chairs or cans is very rude.

@, I agree that it is rude to put chairs in the spot you want, but my point is that some people just have no consideration. case in pioint, after cleaning the spot I usually park in, I wnet out for the day 7 evening & came home to find my neighbors tenant parked in that spot because it was easy to get in & out of & ignored the spot up a little (closer to her house) which had ice on the ground. SO I had to park on the ice & hope the next morning my car would cooperate & i could get out to go to work. there was NO reason she couldn’t have parked there instead of the clean spot she saw me spend hours cleaning to make my life a little less complicated.
I would not put chairs in the street , I also understand when there is a function within 3 blocks of me that i may not have a place on my block to park but that is occasional & no big deal. My neighbor actually told me to block his driveway because of a party 3 blocks away that took all the spots on our block. Life happens & sometimes you have to walk a little to get home from where you are parked BUT whan you spend the whole day cleaning snow (and I don’t put it in the street I put it in my yard) I expect people to be courteous enough not to leave me no place to park.

@, You pull up, see a good spot, and take it. That’s life. I somehow think you would be less annoyed if your neighbor took the spot, and not the “tenant”

@anonymous, No it was more the fact the there was a spot in front but it was icy & she just didn’t want to park on ice. the worse part was when I told her I thought that was rude she got in my face about how she “works with the police” & I am intimidating her.

People you do not have any right to block anyone from parking anywhere and to tell you the truth when i see people do that there have been times that i would move what they have there and park there anyway. no one owns a spot anywhere it’s called public parking. GET OVER IT !!

If you want a spot to be yours put a driveway in and when somebody else parks there you can have them towed. Whatever else is up for grabs

@, Problem with driveways are that they are used as playgrounds not parking spots. most people park in the street even though they have a driveway. that’s just plain stupid. don’t have a driveway, don’t have the space to put one in or I would. Just ask for some courtesy when I take the time to clean a spot to make my life easier. Not talking about guests visiting for the holidays or whatever just the people who live here year long & don’t bother to clean a spot & just ake a clean one leaving the snow pile icy spots for others.

you can’t have a car towed for blocking your driveway, for years i lived on abbey ct and people would block my driveway every so often….so i would call the pct (most of the time they did’nt even show up) but if they did they would issue a summons.

I’ve moved a few garbage cans and will continue to. A few years back a neighbor was bitching about having to park his 3rd car on the Avenue because of someone else had parked in front of his house, so the very next time I paid someone with a plow a few bucks to push the pile he made into the opening and cleared my very own spot. I think he got the message, now after the latest snow I see I have to break in a new neighbor on the block.
Also FYI – nfh – the Police don’t tow cars for blocking driveways, they write the summons and the property owner calls a tow truck. Thats been the law for years and it works but mark sure your driveway is clearly marked and a legal driveway, otherwise you may have other problems

Maybe Sanitation needs to pick the garbage off the streets when they are going around. I mean lets face it, if it’s on the street it belongs to no one, once someone puts something outside their property line its trash and free for the taking or trash

Build a driveway, buy a house with a driveway, or shutup about it. It’s public parking at the end of the day. You folks are exaggerating this “shoveling for hours” nonsense. It takes about 20 minutes to shovel your car out. All you have to do is shovel the wheels that move your car (usually front).
And to back up what someone said earlier… the property owner of a driveway is responsible for (A) calling the cops to issue a summons on a car blocking a driveway (B) and calling the tow company.
