GBCares Puts Up Holiday Lights

DSC_2228

GBCares has been busy all week putting up the holiday lights we all enjoy along Gerritsen Avenue.

Tonight they finished them off by stringing garland across the Avenue.

Here is a letter they sent out last year which asking for donations to help them. Donations are always appreciated.

We hope that this letter finds you in good health and great spirits during if this holiday season. The holiday decorations along Gerritsen Avenue mean something different to each resident. For some. they are a great reminder that YOU are finally home at the end of a hard days work. To others. they are a reminder of the short days and long nights during this time of year and make us wish for summer. In any case. we hope that they put a smile on your face by giving you a bit of holiday cheer.

Thanks to donations from residents. local businesses. organizations and elected officials. we have decorations to install each Year. We want to give a,special thanks to everyone that helped fix and install the decorations on Gerritsen Avenue. If not for these volunteers the cost for decorating, Gerritsen Avenue would be about $10,000 a year.

The cost this year for the new decorations and other supplies will be about $2.800. We hope that YOU may consider making a donation to help cover this cost and to support the positive improvements that GB Cares continues to make for our neighborhood. Please support our community any way that you can

Happy Holidays to you and yours!

All the best,
The Board of GB Cares

Not to stir up the s—, but does anyone else see the humor in a truck full of woodchips putting up GBCares’ Christmas decorations?

Lol, I was going up the Ave this afternoon and saw it too, got a good chuckle out of it. Good for them, glad they still have the help of the cherrypicker. It really makes the Avenue look beautiful and bright and gets you in the holiday spirit. Thank you to all the people who do it. It was doubley ironic that they were in front of the Devils Minions blood drive at Amicis. Ahhhh, I love Gerrittsen Beach!

@anonymous, I didn’t say I didn’t like the idea but it wasn’t a suggestion – it was a comment/criticism. Suggestions are given to the people who do the work, usually prior to the work, and not left on a message board.

Let’s imagine the work that would have to go into lighting all the trees. And where does the electricity for tree lights come from? I believe (and someone correct me if I’m wrong because I’m not affiliated with GBCares in any way) that the lights they put up each year are wired into the street lights so that when the street lights come on, the holiday lights go on. Last year GB Cares was criticized when a strand of lights across Gerritsen Avenue went out…imagine when half the trees on the avenue go out because wires are cut or bulbs are stolen?

Thanks again GB Cares for your efforts on this project every year – I wave to the Santa when I pass!
