Lew Fidler Re-Elected to City Council District 46

According to the results, Fidler received 79.2 percent of the vote after 17,101 constituents voted for him. Berardelli received 19.5 percent, or 4,201 votes. Liberal challenger Dereck Sacerdote received the remaining one percent, which amounted to 282 votes or 1.3%.

Fidler told Courier Life that “the results are “dramatic and gratifying” — especially since the results were ten percent better than they were four years ago.” adding “I’d like to think that [the results] are a validation of the work I’ve done,” he said. “It’s nice to know that it’s being noticed.”

Hey everyone! First, I want to thank everyone for the love and support throughout these past months.

As far as results, most will look at the numbers and won’t see the things I see here, but that doesn’t bother me. Needless to say, it’s not nearly as simple as the spin would make it seem!

I could go into strategy and numbers and and comparisons and reasons for all of that for hours – all I can say is that given the lack of money and manpower in our campaign, I can live with putting up the second best Republican challenge of an incumbent in Brooklyn.

This was the first campaign in our area in a LONG time that came close to looking like a two-sided campaign – probably since the 2002 State Senate race, which only took up part of the area.

The fact that our numbers remained relatively consistent despite a last minute mailing blitz fueled by thousands of dollars and the fact that thousands more voters came out than last election cycle tells me that there is a solid base to build on in coming years.

Both points show that people are starving for real races, and I will make ending the days of the “token” campaign a priority in the coming years.

Aside from the results, this campaign was amazingly fun and awesome. I am so blessed to have been given the chance to run, and if given the choice, I’d do it all again – ALL of it.

Thank you GB.net for your fair and balanced coverage. We had to fight tooth and nail for every bit of ink we got because of exactly what you said – a culture dominated by one party. I asked for a fair shake, and you gave me one. Keep up the great work.

And to everyone in Gerritsen Beach – it was an honor and a pleasure to talk with all of you during these past few months. I am enamored with your close-knit community and stand ready to help out and support your community whenever I can.

For openers, I must compliment Gene Berardelli, for being the gentleman he is. If I were your campaign manager, I would say, the time to begin the next race for office is now. I’m sure you want a deserved rest, but you should continue to attend community meetings in each of the neighborhoods. Get out to Dan Foster’s 5K race again next year, and to the KofC again, of course. For those who don’t know, Gene won a substantial sum at the 2nd Annual Family Day Octoberfest, run by the Rev. Mathews Kof C, in Gerritsen Beach, and contributed the $ 1,500 back to the KofC. He could have put that into the cost of a mailing, but it speaks to his character, that he did not….

As for Derek Sacerdote. A serious minded young teacher, and another gentleman. A correction should be noted: He is anything but a “Liberal” party challenger. He is a LIBERTARIAN. Keep government out of our lives (almost to a point, we would each have to go back to carrying six-shooters for protection).

To Lew Fidler: Keep doing what you do Councilman. Where we think you might make adjustments, we are going to make it known! Congratulations to you, and your staff.

@George R. Broadhead, George: Thank you. I missed this past meeting, but I will be back to Gerritsen Beach in the near future, as well as other neighborhoods. Oh, and I promise to be in better shape for Dan’s 5K! Please give my best to all in the neighborhood, and rest assured that I remain ready to help wherever I can.

Thank you all for voting and thank you for your showing of support. Despite the large Republican enrollment in GBeach, I took about 70% (maybe more, the numbers came in fast) in the neighborhood. I have often joked that Gerritsen Beach is a unique neighborhood. And folks, it is. People care deeply and are “in your face” Brooklyn style to let you know what they care about.
It is my honor and privilege to represent this neighborhood and the entire 46th District down at City Hall.
You have my promise—especially you George—that I will continue to work just as hard in the next 4 years as I worked in the past 8.
Thanks again to all, I look forward to great things in our community.
