At the last property owners meeting it was brought up that there is a pipe across from kiddie beach, connected to the parkway, that has water pouring out of it during and after rain storms draining into the creek.
If true this is true this would be in violation of federal law. Highway water runoff has to be drained into open bodies of water. The creek does not qualify as an open body of water.
Mike Taylor, Chairman of GBCares along with George Broadhead, President of the GB Property Owners took our Assemblyman Alan Maisel for a tour where the pipe was discussed and it was promised to be looked into and followed up on.

There are a few more run-off locations that are not visible because of over growth. The picture shows one that is visible from across the Creek, but we got nearby in Buddy DeWitt’s boat to take the photograph. Assemblyman Alan Maisel sent an enlarged picture of same to the proper agency. “It is being looked into”. One point of significance about run-off from the Belt Parkway–on which vehicles travel constantly–is the contradiction.
WHAT CONTRADICTION, YOU ASK? One of our good neighbors and member of the GBPOA, was given a warning summons for releasing water into the street, that made its way to a storm drain. He was told he could be fined for washing his car in front of his house. THAT MEANS ANYONE OF US IN GERRITSEN BEACH!

To Anonymous Reply: That;s the point exactly… all of the storm drains empty into the creek, ergo, if it is not permissible to wash cars in Gerritsen Beach, because the water runs into the creek. Why is it all right for the city to allow water to run off into the creek from drains (see picture)?
According to Federal Law, run-off should not go into small bodies of water, but into a Bay or Ocean.

There are already nibbles from 2 federal agencies. This website and other local community websites (e.g. Sheepsheadbites) are being monitored by agencies and politicians. More often than not, to be prepared to cover their butts, or to be prepared for some of the concerns of constituents. We, who read or contribute, should go back over previous issues to try to determine whether the matters addressed have been resolved; or shelved under the guise of “being looked into”.
