[The good parts of the meeting]
On Wednesday October 7th (and every first wednesday) the property owners held their meeting in the St. James basement.
It was a normal meeting nothing out of the ordinary. Except here are some things to note.
The Bantry Bar is now a cause for major concern within the community especially with the 61st who have recently visited and witnessed what the neighborhood has been telling them.
Lew Fidler is seeking community input regarding the “water park” at Seba Avenue Park (Above)
John Douglas, President of GBCares, stated that although GBcares received a letter outlining GBcares role in the community it was not signed by the parks commissioner. The GBcares board had voted that “it is not a vaild letter”. Even after the letter is signed they will be severerly limited with some of their larger projects they had planned. GBCares has been continuing with their Saturday program cleaning the avenue.
Alan Maisel spoke for some time about multiple projects…more to come on those later.

WHat is the “Top Lot” construction they speak of??

@NewBeachRat,
A tot lot is a park area with items for very young kids. that is what is being planned for phase three. Phase Two is the construction of a comfort station which will have a storage area for the parks department equipment.
As to some of the suggestions below, I just wantto point out that ther are liability issues with some of these things. I don’t think you see monkey bars in new parks any more for tht reason. But, we will see when we get to scoping where we stand.

@Lew from Brooklyn, I understand that some of these things are liabilities, especially the rock climbing wall but everything I mentioned (excluding the imagination station) was aimed at younger children so the monkey bars would only be maybe 4 feet off the ground. Same with the rock wall aiming at children under 5. A firetruck could easily be something obtainable & promote a little imagination while having all of these neat little features on it that tots would love. The Imagination Station would be amazing but I am sure that there are reasons why all of NYC does not have anything like it.

@Lew from Brooklyn, I have another question for you Lew, what can we or you do to clean up the Seba Ave Park? Every time I go up there with my one year old, there is litter everywhere & often broken glass. And of course, the litter catches his eye whether it be shine on broken glass or a old soda bottle rolling across the playground in the wind & he almost always make a dash to pick it up. Although of course I understand it is my job as a mother to make sure he doesn’t touch the potentially harmful litter what can we all do to clean it up and make sure it doesn’t come back?? I do not bring him there (even though it is MUCH closer then GB Park) because of the litter that accrues. I find myself personally picking things up and placing the litter into the one garbage can but I don’t know where those things were before my hands touch them. I understand that we will soon have a park attendant, will this person also clean the park or just attend to the comfort station?

@NewBeachRat, When the comfort station is opened, there will be a fullParks Dept. staffer at the park. That should do it!

As for new interesting thing for a park (in lieu or in addition to the sprinklers) , what about putting a small rock climbing wall or kiddie tunnels?? Def more swings (which I believed they mentioned) and more things that kids can climb on?? Like a fake fire truck to play on?? Sit in the front, spin the driving wheel, climb up the ladder, slide down the pole or slide, etc..Or a pirate ship that in the summer squirts water from a cannon, with nets to climb up & chutes to slide down? Then there is this park I use to visit as a kid, called the Imagination Station… here’s a link to a pic of it (http://www.nj.com/news/local/index.ssf/2009/08/roxbury_kids_to_help_design_ne.html). It was a castle-like wooden structure that kids could climb all over, up, down, under, around, through bridges and tunnels, balance beams & monkey bars….it was awesome!

Why can’t it be like the parks in the suburbs? This is what we should have.

@,
Well I want…
a band half shell, and a drive in movie spot, and a petting zoo, and an atrium, and a fineart museum, and a laser tag gauntlet, and a wave pool, and food court where the waitresses wear rollerskates, and a ball pit, and a zoltar fortune machine, and what ever else everybody I think has.
For the kids.

Well it’s certainly not like the city here! Living in the beach is closer to the burbs than the city.

Brooklyn Bridge park in Dumbo has a nautical themed playground. It has a fairly large ship. I would like something like that.

@Anonymous, I would like a patio for lawn chairs to gaze up at the stars at night and perhaps a wine and cheese singles mix.

@Feorge A. Head, There are beer & potato chip singles mixers up there almost every night in the summer…the singles are under 18 but some people are into that.

I would like to suggest a sand box full of cat litter for my two cats Rusty and Sandy to play in. They are long time beach residents and feel left out. They always complain that the beach rats get all the attention.

Being there will be bathrooms..how about showers..this way the homeless people that sleep in the weeds will have a place to bathe and go to the bathroom.

I had the opportunity last week to meet Mr Fidler outside of Gerritsen Beach, where he was not trying for votes and I guess he did not know that I was a member of the neighborhood that he needed votes from. I found him to be extremely rude and obnoxious. He certainly will NOT get my vote !

You know what, I have given the rude and obnoxious comment some great thought. Lew is really a no nonsense, right to the point, don’t really give a shxx attidtude guy when telling you the facts. Isn’t that good? I think so. You might think that is rude but I don’t think that is the intention. I have never really heard him say anything that wasn’t true. All the years he has been coming to the GBPOA, he has been pretty straight up. When on occasion he has been wrong, he has admitted it. Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, to make things better for ourselves here, gives opportunity for others outside the neighborhood as well. That is the way it is. I can tell you this, if we in the community ask for more permits, use our own fields and such more, “outsiders” wouldn’t have the chance to. But alas, more of you parents are not pushing the sports things on your kids. Good luck to you, because those will be the ones hanging out in skate park getting in trouble!
