New Outdoor Additions to Businesses on Gerritsen Avenue

[Gerritsen Bagel]

Gerritsen Bagels and Leos Nikey D’s have newish outdoor equipment outside of their respective buildings.

The Bagel Store, put in an ice machine and a dumpster outside it’s store a few months ago. Then more recently the ice machine was broken into. This is why you now see the cages on the outside protecting the ice machine and dumpster.

Leos put in a clothing drop box from “U’SAgain” not USA gain (pronounced “use again”) (usagain2.com). The deal with this thing is: that its not a charity but they make money selling the clothes donate “a clothing recycling business” that sells the bulk of these donated items to Third World countries.

Don’t confuse this box with a non-profit company like the Salvation army or St. Marys Church who also accepts clothing donations, but phased out boxes 15+ years ago. The store gets paid monthly to host the box in this case around $75 monthly.

It is sad to see that an ice machine and a garbage can have to locked up! I grew up in G.B. and we never had a gate or a bar on anything, wow times sure have changed, and not for the better it would appear……..

New Dutch has always had their ice machine locked up behind the fence. In what Shangra-La does NFH live in that you can leave stuff out all nite and not lock it up? And those clothing collection boxes are a complete rip off. It isn’t a “donation” to people who need help, it is a donation to a MULTI MILLION DOLLAR used clothing business that hides behind “charity”. They sell the clothes and even the unusable stuff is even sold to rag companies. To stay under the radar of the law, they donate a very small amount of profit, like 10%, to charity. It’s much more useful to donate to The Salvation Army or to our own St. James Thrift Store. The Salvation Army etc. gave up those boxes years ago because they had the tendency to catch fire. Anyone want to take bets on how long this one will last? And whats up with the sidewalk sales of sheets etc. in front of this place. All looking a little ghetto, IMHO.

Oh man I didn’t know the deal about those donation boxes. Well maybe it is just this one but I guess it pays to check out your charities. Thanks for reporting on that!

    to the beachwalker:
I don’t live in a (shangra-la) as you put it, but i do live in a place where we dont lock up our ice machines, and we don’t have bars on any of our stores, (even jewelry stores) I was however trying to make a point (that i guess you missed) that years ago nothing was locked up in the beach and there were no gates on any of the stores and i got the pics to prove it,,, mabe some old-timers will remember and agree……

To nfh, No disrespect intended!! It is Brooklyn, and you really can’t leave anything unlocked anymore. I go back to the sixties and remember those black folding gates across most stores on the Ave. But my parents were here from the late 40′s and my Mother remembers every store that was on the Ave. I’ll ask her about the gates. Why don’t you post your pictures, I would love to see them, as I’m sure others would also.

That box looks disgusting! All of the garbage bags all around it. Are you even allowed to just place these things on sidewalks like that?

I am not sure but I believe that the ice machine, dumpster, and the charity box all need some sort of sidewalk permit. Especially the permanantly affixed cages on the sidewalk.

    To: g,
thats right no gates on any of our stores, no locks on any products either, you can handle the ipods and cd players without asking the clerk to open a locked box, and we dont put wire on our clothing …..just take i t off the rack and try it on……in sears the tools are not locked up…..or as beachwalker said……mabe it is shangra-la…….hmmmmmmmm

It IS Shangra-La. My Mom bought instant coffee the other day and believe it or not it was in a locked case. What a shame! I don’t remember the last time I tried on a coat without a wire going up the sleeve. Are you down south or up north?

The out door boxes need permits from the city to be on the sidewalk and tax stamps on file if they are collecting a fee (rent). Start calling 311 on the ugly red clothing drop box

@, Agreed!! we should be helping OUR community which I would imagine would be our churches first. Thank you for bringing this up I have a few phone calls to make. Lets work together for OUR community!

If no one leaves donations in the box, the company will not pay to rent the spot. Very simple. Just don’t use it. All this reporting on people, the KofC, the birds, is starting to feel a little like Steven Kings ‘Needful Things’… Be careful what you wish for.

NFH you may not need gates on Jewelry stores but watch out for the weirdos that live outside N.Y There are some real sick people in these ” nice places” doing some scary stuff.. Hope you enjoy your pool in December, I will be enjoying nice cold Crisp air, and that real Christmas feeling. Just was in Florida and could not wait to get back to GB. sorry that alot of us do not envy your apparent warm weather and your life with out gates on the ice machine.

@anonymous, i agree nice to think that you can swim in December but their is nothing like CHRISTMAS IN NEW YORK! The heat can become very boring. The change of
seasons are so nice, especially when the kids have to go back to school and the beach is no more.
