According to the complaints at local meetings and emails received, the main problem with Amici is the bikes and bikers, they are loud, very loud. When there are dozens of bikes going up and down Gerritsen Avenue to and from Amicis, according to complaints, it becomes a constant nuisance. Then when it comes time for the group to leave, its one massive sound boom which can only be compared to a concorde.
Another major complaint is that they usually decide to shut down north and southbound traffic so they can all leave together. It has become a quality of life issue for many people, that surround Amici’s and use Gerritsen Avenue.
Then comes their sidewalk cafe.
A concerned resident said at a Property Owners meeting that the sidewalk cafe in front of Amici’s is illegal. Big whoop right? In case you don’t know: A sidewalk cafe is basically tables and chairs in front of an establishment.
During a recent Property owners meeting, it was discussed that the owner of Amici’s feels that why should he pay the city 7 or 9 grand when the fine is only $150.
The Dept of Consumer affairs (which issues the permits to have the sidewalk cafe)starts fines at $2,500. They also can and will shut down a business for lack of a sidewalk cafe permit for up to 30 days. There is even a nifty complaint form right on the DCA website on top of calling 311.
So there it is. What do you think?

I have no problem with them using Amici’s as a gathering place. Bikers, for the most part, are generous people.
My problem is definitely the Noise explosion……consideration for people who keep different hours then they do is a must. Isn’t there a way for them to turn down the pipes at 2:00 am when most people are sleeping? It’s awful to be unable to open a window in the cooler weather and being startled awake by (with no exaggeration) up to 20-25 bikes speeding down the avenue onto Avenue W.

I’m glad Amici is doing business.
I guess none of them live on the block or around the block. This isn’t City, they need to realize its a neighborhood with children and working parents. They should have RESPECT for ALL, Not just for themselves…..
They don’t own the street and shouldn’t take advance of their manpower by shutting down the street for them to leave.
I find it amazing that the Owner isn’t going out of his way to keep his business running and his neighbors happy.

@Ginger1, I think we owe the owner of Amici’s a Big Thank You for a few reasons. By utilizing the sidewalks which are more than big enough, he has cut down on energy consumpsion by using the airconditioning less. He has encouraged people to purchase motorcycles which stimulates the economy and happens to use less gasoline as well as taking up less parking spots in the neighborhood. So I want to say Thank You for being GREEN and caring obout our enviornment!

@, Yes a permit is required, so does the Bagel store, the pizza place, the laundrymat, etc… They all have outdoor seating. This is a beach community if you really want to complain about something I can give you tons of places to go where the violations would be much much more serious. But it seems we would much rather take the money out of the pockets of hard working people that we live with. Seriously I know of some mechanic shops that operate after business hours and with out a license. I seen some old lady jaywalking by the projects, there are doughnut marks in the street by the Bantry that were not made by motorcycles..Seriously Go after someone else. Enough!!!

It is nice to see a GB Business doing well, loud bikes are a way of life nowadays, for me it is the same as a horn or the Vollies siren. Try for one second to put yourself in the owners shoes, you invest in a business, it struggles out of the gate, after many sleepless nights of worry business picks up and you develop a steady clientel, do you turn away your best customers in the interest of trying to make everyone content? Also this is GB, if 50 boy scouts showed up there every night someone would still complain.

Although the noise is a very big factor especially at night, i do appreciate the bikes on the avenue. It’s good to see Amici’s do well in an economy that has gotten so bad. This is not a “gang” and does not pose a threat to anyone. Compared to others on the avenue, they don’t vandalize or do any damage to anything and have become a comfortable presence if you have to walk down the avenue at night.
If I have to wait 2 minutes so all of them can leave together safely, so be it.
Perhaps a sit down with them may come to a solution that makes everyone happy, especially with school starting next week.

Amici is a biker establishment complete with a motorcycle clubhouse next door at what used to be Champions Fitness.
The clubhouse is claimed by the biker group Devil’s Minions, who are affiliated with the 69ers. these are serious guys.
Who cares if they put up a sign! They also have a 30 plus sign on the door.

If noise form motorcycles is a problem, then they are probably illegal. Call the cops, and tell them to arrest the drivers and confiscate the bikes. Of course the NYPD won’t actually DO their job.

@mike, YOU KNOW IT IS AMAZING THAT YOU WILL ALL COMPLAIN ABOUT THE LOUD MOTORCYCLES BUT THERE ARE NO WORRIES ABOUT THE UNDERAGED DRINKING AND DRIVING THAT GOES ON IN THE BEACH. WHAT ABOUT THE CARS RACING UP AND DOWN THE AVENUE MAKING IT EXTREMELY DANGEROUS TO CROSS OR DRIVE AT NIGHT ? WHAT ABOUT THE UNDERAGED KIDS WHO ARE DRUNK AND DRIVING LOOKING FOR A GOOD FIGHT ? WHAT ABOUT THE JUNKIES LOOKING TO STEAL BICYCLES OR BREAK INTO CARS ? HOW ABOUT GETTING TO KNOW THESE BIKERS WHO HANG OUT AT AMICI’S AND SEEING WHAT THEY ARE ALL ABOUT. I KNOW THAT I FEEL VERY SAFE WALKING IN THE BEACH AT NIGHT KNOWING THAT THE BIKERS ARE AT AMICI’S AND KEEPING AN EYE ON THE AREA. I HAVE BEEN IN AMICI’S NUMEROUS TIMES AND HAVE NEVER FELT THREATENED OR OUT OF PLACE. THE PEOPLE AT AMICI’S ARE GOOD PEOPLE AND THE BIKERS ARE ALWAYS LOOKING TO HELP OUT A GOOD CAUSE. THE BIKERS ARE ALSO LOOKING TO SUPPORT SOME LOCAL BENEFITS SO BE OPEN MINDED AND GO GET TO KNOW THESE PEOPLE BEFORE YOU POINT A FINGER…. THANK YOU DM

@SEAN LOUIS,
Sean, can you yourself stop pointing fingers(you incredibly complain about finger pointing as you use both of your hands to point to numerous unrelated issues) and address the real issue? I will spell it out. THE NOISE FROM THE 20-25 BIKES LEAVING TOGETHER AT 2:00AM IS A REAL PROBLEM FOR THE INNOCENT NEIGHBORS AND THEIR CHILDREN WHO LIVE NEARBY. There you go. Stay on topic and come up with something that is constructive to solve the problem for all to be happy, instead of ignoring it and painting the bikers as some sort of saviors of GB. If the bikers are “keeping an eye on the area”, then why do all the incidents you mentioned still keep happening? Surely the bikers will have eradicated all these problems by now, in your opinion anyway. And we all know that these biker guys and gals are good people, willing to help out many causes, go the extra mile for good deeds. But there is a problem with the noise that they need to alleviate it.
Do you have children?? Infants?? Do you live near Amici’s and have had your children and infants woken up in the middle of the night because of the loud motorcycles? Or have you been woken up yourself at 2AM when you had to get up for work at 6AM??If not, then you should politely STFU, or come up with a solution to the real problem, instead of pointing fingers at everthing else wrong in this neighborhood. School is starting, so this problem is only gonna get worse.

@GB Parent, Measures are being taken to try and alleviate the noise problem, we sat at Amicis last night with the sign for noise making sure all bikers approaching even those not stopping at Amicis tried to keeping it down. However we witness one of the loudest bikes on Geritsan Ave, a dirt bike ripping up and down the avenue on a wheelie, with no baffle, an open straight pipe. Two weeks ago while sitting out at Amicis one of your local innocent children threw glass beers bottles out of the car, right near the bar.
You can also not lump all of us into one catagory, there are some people that come down the avenue that do not even stop at Amicis they just race down the avenue, We hope by putting the sign out side we can stop the problems however we cannot stop everone. Anyway all we can do is try.

@Sean, I especially like the doughnut tire marks in front of the Bantry Bar which is only a block away, hmmm i wonder how much noise comes from there! How many underage drinkers are there and when I pass by they take up the sidewalk and the street. The dirt bikes screaming up and down the avenue at night usually come from the Bantry. The race cars (which are loud) whichspeed up and down the avenue and risk lives of innocent people, usually stop at the Bantry Bar. Maybe more efforts should be put into stopping underage drinking and young adults driving dangerously and doing drugs!!

@GB Anon, Really the NYPD does not do much down here except give tickets to our parked cars to show their presence. The noise problem has lessened and will get lesser as time goes on, the owner is working feverously on correcting the problem with the help of the Devil’s Minion. They are concerned and they do care! People at Amici’s are adults most with children and do care about GB. All that is said is what can we do to correct the problem at the Bantry and the young kids speeding and driving recklessly. I believe it may be a more serious problem.

Bob, the owner of Amici’s, attended a GBPOA meeting prior to a fund-raiser, to alert our community about the number of motorcycles that would undoubtedly participate. He had gotten a permit from NYPD for the event. Since Amici transitioned from an espresso cafe to a bar, popular with motorcyclists, there has not been any fights (on 3 occasions, over a 2 year period, someone was barred to prevent a problem).
We have had calls from senior citizens, and parents of babies, who were awakened in the early a.m., and we addressed the matter with Bob. Since that time, he has had signs made to remind the bikers about common courtesy on behalf of the community, when leaving in the a.m. hours. We are not dealing with an arrogant attitude towards our community. We are dealing with an owner of a business, who is a resident and property owner in the beach, who is making a concerted effort to correct the noise problem. As has been suggested, not all of that noise can be attributed to the one source, so let’s give it some time to see if the noise has diminished favorably. Let’s couple this with another recent complaint: a person who has lived in Gerritsen Beach, moved to a location nearer the Vollies, and has now complained about the “Vollies” horn (not siren) going off at night. That horn is used to summon other volunteers to the fire house. It is limited to the hours of 0800 to 11 pm. The call of that horn has probably saved countless lives. Often, the “sirens” from Breezy Point or Roxbury, can be heard–and they do not have a time limit. It seems to come down to this: “One man’s noise, is another man’s music”, or visa versa. The problem is not being ignored, and follow-up will continue….

I think everyone should just leave Amici’s alone….never once did anyone who stays there bother ,disrespect,or even say a word to anyone passing by,unless it was Hello…ok,so the bikes are load..big deal…the kids yelling on the ave are load to…and so they stop traffic to let the bikes go…that is to make sure that they pull out safely, and the cars speeding up the ave don’t hit them..and what does take all of 45 seconds….I see things posted on here about Amici’s ….A nice looking clean place….But not a F@#king word on the Bantry bar where the cops are called at least 2-3 times a night,,,fights all the time,,throwing bottles in the street,,you can’t walk past the place without some Assh@le making a comment,Not to mention the front of the place is dirty,,,garbage lines the street and sidewalk,,,,And you people are worried about a few tables and chairs……go figure….OPEN your eyes people you’s are looking the wrong way…I’ll take the noise of the motorcycles, rather than the Assholes with comments throwing bottles, fighting, dirty ,filthy, smelly ,run down Bantry any day

AND I ALSO WANT TO SAY WHAT IS 2 MINS TO WAIT FOR THEM TO LEAVE …WITH THE WAY THEY DRIVE DOWN THAT AVE YOU HAVE TO STOP TRAFFIC..I WOULDNT WORRY ABOUT THE MOTORCYCLES MAKING NOISE I WOULD WORRY MORE ABOUT THE KIDS THAT SPEED DOWN GB AVE

Being a biker myself I understand the need to respect my neighbors, Have many time had to let up on my throttle in order to prevent from waking up people on my block.
Most bikes are really not as loud as it seams, But for one person that I know who has become a member of the club on Gerritsen Avenue has obscenely loud mufflers. He really does not have to open his throttle the way he does to get home on Knapp st, specially in the hours of 1am to 3am on the weekdays.
So, If he reads this. Please let up on your throttle during the weekdays. And let your throttle RIP!! weekends, I know how good it feels.
As for stopping traffic on the Ave or anywhere els, a moment of time won’t kill me to wait

I dont mean anything except that I see where this is going. I also was not the first to mention the any particular club in these responses..All I’m sayin is, yes maybe the noise needs to be quelled to a minimum, but other than that I cant see any reason for Amici’s or any MC to come under fire for this. If this complaint is solved than it’ll just move on to the next legitimate business that someone gets a hard on for…Let me ask this if instead of a MC usin the bar as a hang out, would their be suspicions if it was a softball team usin the bar. I’m not talkin bout noise, but bout your unfounded gambling claim…My opinion to that is I think not. If so than people would say the same bout the beach bar and the softball teams that go there after there games…I’ve yet to hear that, but who knows that’ll probably be next…lol

I dont understand all the problems with Amici’s. I have been there numerous time, I am not a biker and I had some coffee and hung out with no problem. No one seemed to wanna start a fight and in fact everyone was friendly. I have also passed by late and it dosent exactly look like anyone there is getting ready for a rumble. As for the vollies horn, it has been going off since 1922 so why is it that now it has suddenly become a problem? As a vollie myself, we can always turn it off I suppose, but that could mean that someone doesn’t get us when they need us. We sometimes depend on that horn to alert us to an emergency.
We simply don’t have the money to update our communications to a level that would allow us to stop using the horn. Maybe some neighborhood contributions from someone other than the same loyal people who have been supporting us all these years. Lotta talk and no action

There have always been people who complain about the horn. There are people who complain about St. James’ bells as well. People will complain about anything. You cannot please everyone so don’t bother trying.
Maybe we can get the bikers to hang out near the skate park or down the point to help with other problems.
Or maybe parents can pay attention and take responsibility when someone lets them know how their kid (in the white mustang with the black stripe up the hood or in the low rider pick up truck with the neon lights or in the red blazer with all his friends hanging out the windows) speeds up & down the avenue, making crazy turns off side streets and courts, screams obscenities at mothers with small children, waits at the point until old women walking their dogs try to cross at Lois and then come speeding up to scare them into running across the Avenue.

Amici is the type of establishment that every community should be proud to call their own. The bikers have always been respectful and I have no objections on waiting a few minutes to make certain they all depart as a group. It’s safer for everyone (bikers, pedestrians and cagers) when they do that.

So now its illegal for motorcycles to ride down the avenue? You complain about the bikers, but what about the people on their dirtbikes and quads? Or what about all the teenagers hanging infront of everyones houses and businesses, getting drunk and destroying peoples property? You wanna complain, burning bet your the first one to show up to their fund raisers!! And so what if they shut down traffic for a whole 5 minutes so they can leave together. They ride “TOGETHER!!” Its not that bad. STOP BITCHING AND DEAL WITH IT!!!
