Marine Park Brooklyn Lighting Strike

A cricket player was struck by lightning this afternoon in Marine Park!

Patrick Gibson, 41, was barely breathing, legs badly burned and his clothes were totally destroyed when he was hit by lighting collecting cricket off the field.

No word yet if this man survived. Local EMT’s say the man was DOA.

So sad. I always fear this when the kids are playing baseball. These storms can come up so quickly and it’s a large area before you reach safety.

This is a tragic event. However, since I am into the outdoors, let me explain what happened:
His clothing was destroyed because within that few seconds the moisture between his clothing and body became steam and with no outlet his cloths exploded like a pressure cooker. Lightning can hit over ten miles from a storm even if there is a blue sky. Ever hear the term “bolt from the blue?” Nature shook the warning rattle yesterday, but people ignored it, however, by the time you hear thunder it is too late. I would impart more of my knowledge, but no one would listen anyway. An example is never to shelter under a tree, but if you move out from it by about its height and sit on an insulator you would survive. The reason for this is that the lightning would be attracted to that high point, but the current passing through the ground would get you if there is no insulation. You can check me on this.

My experience is a bit limited. My advice would be to keep the NOAA radio going and if they send out an alarm, get to the nearest safe place as fast as possible. Remember the old saying: Any port in a storm. This means that if you cannot get back to where you started it would be better to tie up somewhere. Any other comments from the mariners?

Glad to her that he survived. Hopefully he will recover fullly from his injuries. He is very lucky to be alive. On the subject of dead bodies, does anybody have any further details on the body that was found in GB on Friday afternoon? There was no further info in the news other than the discovery of the body.

The Firefighters from E-321 on Gerritsen Ave and Ave. U, who are Certified First Responders, were the first to begin CPR on this guy, and therefore also deserve a little “atta boy” for a job well done!!

@, It was on the 1010WINS Website as well, but they never had an update to the story. Very strange tha there has been no further information on the subject from anyone.

@Anonymous, Yep I haven’t heard or found anything else either. The NYPost had the same article except the spelled Gerritsen with “son.” And no one in the neighborhood heard anything – none of my rumor monger neighbors have asked me about it. Maybe it wasn’t in the Beach?

So from reading this it sounds a little uncertain as to whether or not this unfortunate man passed. Does anyone know for certain? As for the body found I haven’t heard anything about that at all, this is the first time.

the body that was found was in the marina on Flatbush avenue near the marine park bridge. it was unclear as to the cause of death and an autopsy was being done. i had heard that he was a member of the polish yacht club that is housed in that marina

@terry, Finally some info. Thanks Terry. Guess the location of the body explains why no one in Gerritsen Beach knew anything about it.
