A new bagel store, also named Gerritsen Beach Bagels has opened on Gerritsen Avenue, in the previous location of previous Gerritsen Beach Bagels.
In November of last year we reported, with some controversy, that the bagel store was on the verge of closing. Subsequently, it closed at the end of January.

For the last 5 months Gerritsen Beach has been without a bagel store.
Some interesting things to mention about this new store. They kept the bagel oven that has been with that store since it opened. Maybe the secret of the good bagels is in that oven. The sheet metal ceiling that we were all familiar with has been replaced open air beams which surprisingly makes the store more spacious. The whole placed looked nice and clean, and the bagels are being kept in a glass counter which customers can see what bagels are available.
We wish them all the best!

So glad to see them open. Can’t wait to get one

I think the bagels were always good at the old store. It was half the management that ruined that store with their horrible customer service and basically rude treatment of customers. I hope the new owners know how to run a business and take care of their customers. And speaking of “good” customer service, is Pete back? I thought he was opening up the new store.

The workers are very nice, they seemed a little overwhelmed at first, but they have been nothing but polite and efficient. I can say that there are always like 4 people working, better than just poor Pete trying to tackle a line out the door. I agree that the bagels seem a little overcooked, Im sure they will improve over time. The coffee is great.

Thought the bagels were great. Owners and workers were so nice. Love how they arranged the store and seems like they have bakery stuff too. Should mention that cold cuts are cheaper there than other stores also. Wishing them lots of luck! I’m so glad its back!

@M, Oh please, this guy is trying to run a business, not a food pantry. If u want cheap milk walk to Keyfood. Let’s let them run their own business, he’s got bills to pay and a family to support too.

@anon, sorry to be the one to tell you this. Milk prices are regulated by the state and cannot be marked-up PERIOD
Small delis are usually the main offenders with this law. You could report them if you want.
The state publishes a monthly (maybe bi-weekly now) price guide.

I spoke to the owner and made the suggestion to have 2 different lines. 1 for eggs and sandwiches and 1 for the quick stuff. I loved Pete, but it was crazy waiting in line for a cup of coffee when the guy in front of you wants 5 egg sandwiches. I know he was short staffed.

@Jim, They had a sign on the counter this am dividing the line, one for sandwiches and one for bagels and coffee. The staff is still a bit overwhelmed (it took over 5 minutes for me to get a coffee with 4 employees behind the counter and only one person in front of me). I think its going to work out for them though……

Are they bike friendly? I used to ride my bike up to the door and bring it inside while I picked up some bagels and coffee.

I stopped in this morning and picked up muffins and a bagel. The muffins were tasty – and best of all – not the oversized muffins that none of us needs! Whole wheat bagel was great too.
Staff was friendly. Looking good. Glad to have a choice – not just New Dutch!

Stopped in this am, they are still very confused. All I asked for was coffee and they fought over whose job it was to get the coffee, whose job it was to ring it up. 3 people working and the owner wasnt there. They really need to resolve this issue, they have the potential to be great, just need to be more efficient to handle the crowds.

Do you know what I like? I like that they have the same prices every day. They dont change the price depending on who was at the register like the other place.
I didnt comment while the old bagel place was on its way out, but god were they a bunch of idiots!

I haven’t had the greatest of experiences there. The bagels are often too well done. They are totally confused. Ask them to slice some cold cuts and its a massive frenzy. Young girl working there (not cashier) was really rude to my mom. ATM doesn’t ever work and they don’t take debit cards. If you’re low on cash, no shopping there early in the AM. They charged me $7 for a turkey hero the other day. Had no choice to have it on a hero since they had no other bread than bagels.

@sue, I think it would be appropriate for me to leave a response to this because I feel terrible for what happened; My dearest apologies to your mother, it was not my intention at all to be rude to her in any kind of way. I was doing something important because there was a huge problem with the grill and i had to take down a number while my little cousin was yelling for some help. I had snapped back saying hold on and without a doubt i would help him as soon as it took me those 5 seconds to write down that number. I was then told that i was being rude and i had apologized to your mother 2-3 times if i offended her in any kind of way after i was told that was not how to run a business, but im only 16. To be honest its true, i do not know how to run a business, my first reaction would be to snap at my little cousin after i got frustrated. I am trying to learn though because i would like to make problems for my brother less and less and become his right hand in this family business. Please, if you see me next time, if youd like just take me aside and remind me who your mother is ( i do not remember what she looks like because she had sunglasses on ) so i can apologize to her in person. Thank you.

I have been there quite a few times in the last week, never had a problem everyones overly friendly, prices are reasonable. I did ask about Pete and they had no idea who I was talking about so I guess that rumor is not true about him being an owner. But the place is kept clean and there are always gonna br problems to work out right after a store opens so we shouldn’t be too critical about stuff yet. Of course in a month or so, we can if things are going bad, but the guy who seems to be the mgr said they are gonna do an express line for coffee or at least they are thinking about it…. het its nice to have some new blood in the neighborhood, lets not scare them away.

I’m not so happy with the bagels or the staff…sometimes the bagels are undercooked, overcooked, or both.the staff looks like they don’t know what they are doing most of the time, the owner is hardly ever there now, by far a family runned business, a couple of older teenagers seem to be running the joint most of the time, the cat’s away the mice will play, its starting to look more and more like the old place, lets hope they straighted out.

Today was my 2nd time getting bagels there and both times I was not satisfied. The first time they took literally 15 minutes and when I got my bagels home everything was toasted and there was no cream cheese on any. So I thought I would give another chance figuring that they were busy that day and they were brand new. Today I had 3 burnt really blackish bagels and they are all different sizes. One was what the other bagel store considered a mini but they charged full price for it. I will not be patronizing that store again.

I bought some stuff and the change back was couple of cents, they had the nerve not to give me my change back, I now it was just a penny or two, but they didn’t give it back, I was just in complete shock. And as I spoke to other pleople that have bought stuff there they also said the same thing, they never give back change if its just a couple of pennies, I never heard of such a thing before, that’s horrible and I think its elligal. Can you just imagine how much money they have actually made out in pennies everyday now since opening up, thats not right at all, I will not be going there to buy anything anymore…
