    • @Another Concerned,

Yes, I was hostility approached by Kiddie Beach “Manager”. She interrupted a conversation I was having yelling that I needed parents permission to take pictures of the kids or to take pictures of her or the guy scooping ice cream. She demanded that I leave.

Initially she refused to identify herself, only claming to be a manager. She claimed that if I posted her picture “I would have a nice lawsuit on my hands”.

What ended up happening was she called former property owners president Denise for a chat with me.

Looks like Kiddie Beach needs to have a new policy regarding photos, or is it just GerritsenBeach.net can’t take photos. Either its banned for everyone or you have to have a “press” policy that includes “Our News” I think I can remember Joel not asking for permission.

The photos above? No one stopped that photographer.

Trust me I wanted to make this its own post with a nifty headline and funny picture.

Ultimately, I was disgusted by Kiddie Beach, this “woman”, and ultimately the Property Owners behavior.

I 100% absolutely appreciated all of the “You’re doing a great job”, “You did the right thing”, “keep it up” compliments on my way home.

@GerritsenBeach.net, Dan, I don’t think the comments on the flicker site are appropriate and you should remove them. If you want to be, the great photographer/correspondent that you can be, comments like this only shows your immaturity. Although you feel you were attacked at the beach, you should not let it prompt you to write degrading comments as you did.

I think that those pictures are a nice way for people who were not at the event to see what happened. Keep up the good work. That lady is mean and nasty on a good day. Don’t take it personally

Your point is well taken, about “Our News”, but Joel Garson has had his share of controversy about picture taking at Kiddie Beach. Granted, you are not the most popular person in our community these days, but you are not being singled out. Parents are especially concerned about their children being photographed for a website ‘blog’. How often do they read about an international child pornography ring sending pictures of young children–from toddlers on up–about which they read, many of the pictures have been “doctored” for perverted sexual fantasy. Correct me, if I was given the wrong information, but there were children in line, awaiting the ices being scooped by “the guy”.
A few years ago, there were many complaints about a man who was photographing children in the library on Gerritsen Avenue. It was addressed by a division of the NYPD. If you ever have a child–boy or girl–and you or their mother notices someone taking pictures of your children, you will be concerned, believe me. The person who wrote, “I love the pictures you take of my kids” is probably not alone. There may be as many others who do not mind, as those who do, but that is their right to accept or reject. Even “TMZ” is loathe to take pictures of celebrities children. We do not need publicity for this privately owned small patch of land, with 20-some shade trees and imported sand. It is not one of the private enclave beaches in Sea Gate, nor does it have Breezy Point cabanas. It is a simple place of rest for the families of fire, police, sanitation department and other working class families who live in this community. If you want suggestions about things to photograph in the beach, there is Gerritsen Avenue, near the bus shelters that are once again being overgrown with weeds and infested with ticks. Or, if you are looking for more wood chips, try Lester Court, where neighbors are complaining about the smell and the bugs, or take some pictures of ATV’s up on two wheels driving down the center of Gerritsen Avenue. Other than that, I wish you good luck in your endeavors.

I WAS AT THE BEACH ON SUNDAY AND IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL DAY. MY ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE MANAGEMENT DID NOT FEEL IT NECESSARY TO TELL THAT LADY THAT SAT ALL DAY JUST WERING HER BRA THAT HER ATTIRE WAS INAPPROPRIATE. IT IS KIDDY BEACH. IF A MAN CAME IN WEARING JUST BOXER SHORTS OR TIGHTY WHITIES THERE WOULD BE A RIOT DOWN THERE.

drama, thats all it boils down to.

Gb.net you really should start respecting people in the community.

it seems like you like to make drama to punch up the hits on your site opr something.

These people are mothers and fathers etc in gerritsen beach and they should be respected despite you not getting your way.

I seems like, at least according to the below usa today article and other web sites that it is generally legal to take pictures in any public place where there is no expecation of pricacy, i.e, no shots in the bathroom or using a telephoto lens to peek into a window.

Even if you are in a private place such as Kiddie Beach or the Breezy Point Surf Club et al, the act of taking pictures is not illegal but if you are there without permission, i.e. your are not a member, you are trespassing and then you may be asked to leave but any pictures you take are still legal. Apparently, the only one who can ask for your pictures and/or your equipment is a law officer with a court order.

Common sense would be to ask before entering private property to take pictures but if you’re outside the gate on a public sidewalk and what goes on there in viewable by the general public then you can click away legally to your heart’s content.

Mr. Broadhead’s implication that pictures of the children may wind up on some sleazy website is a real stretch IMHO. The place is called Kiddie Beach correct so who would you expect to be in most of the photographs, senior citizens? If I’m walking around a public park and I take pictures of someone holding a kid’s birthday party is that supposed to be illegal? What about shots of little leaguers or AYSO soccer players?

The bottom line is that legally in any public place there is almost always no expectation of privacy and in many private places that are outside & easily viewable by the public not much privacy can be expected there as well.

I respect Mr. Broadhead, but it sounds like Mr. Broadhead is drinking the GB cares Kool Aid. Taking pictures is legal. GBNET was right about the wood chips and people are having hissy fits. Taking pictures was always fine until woodchipgate.

@, I agree with that. Mr. Broadheads’ tone about the webmaster has really changed! He had nothing but praise for him before “Woodchipgate” (that IS hysterical!) Does anyone else remember when GB cares was first formed and one of their main objectives seemed to be closing Kiddy Beach? I remember being down there and 2 GB cares moms came down by the gates, not in, and took cameras out of their baby carriages to take pictures of the beach. What a joke! It was a mystery what they were trying to prove. Something about the lifeguards I think. That was when the water testing started and the rules about not going in the water for 48 hrs. after a rain or some nonsense like that started. Now I guess GB cares has teamed up with GBPOA to silence our own Woodward and Bernstein. God Bless America and our 1st ammendment rights! Tell it like it is! P.S. Don’t drink the kool-aide!

Following the recommendations of blueMagoo, I read, “The Photographer’s Right” and the summations of dozens of cases, re: the right to take photographs. It would seem that only the photographers have rights. Be that as it may, the petulant photographer is not a member of GBPOA, and was trespassing. “…when a property owner tells you not to take a photograph while on the premises, you are legally obligated to honor the request”. Had I been present, I’m sure I would have handled the situation differently. No, I haven’t been drinking GBcares Kool Aid. I am very supportive of anyone in our community who works at reaching his or her goal, and the owner of this website is fully aware of that. That doesn’t mean I have to agree with the means to his end. I want this guy to succeed, but not at the expense of our community. He’s beginning to sound like the kid who will take his bat and ball and go home, if he doesn’t get his way. It’s his blog, so he doesn’t have to edit or delete the disrespectful comments someone made about the woman (and mother) who reacted to his taking pictures. But he didn’t hesitate to delete comments someone made about his father. That’s his right , of course. and it’s our right to protect our private property.

@George Broadhead, George I’m glad to hear that you would of handled it differently and that your not on the kool aid but two things trouble me . one wasn’t kiddie beach open to everyone that day ? and if not why wasn’t he stopped at the gate or for that fact asked at the gate not to take pictures . second .Take my bat and leave doesn’t actually fix this situation

@anonymous, I think he wakes up every morning and takes a big dump in his living room and then runs around trying to see who to blame. Stop crapping on your own community, family, freinds. what good are you getting from being so negative about your neighborhood. You just make no sense at all. You should just walk down the avenue letting little pieces of crap fall out of your ass as that is all you are doing to your home.

Where was the need to “protect private property” the last two kiddie beach openings? It sounds childish to me. It all stems from the woodchips. Who can deny this?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • George R. Broadhead

For me, personally, it has nothing to do with the wood chips. There are many people who are upset about having a camera pointed at them: the youth who had it pointed at them on Halloween, and when congregating on corners, the riders of the ATV;s and many others. Citizens attending meetings, etc. Again, personally, I think it can be much ado about nothing, but if members of a private beach make the request to ask not to be photographed, and the manager on duty responded, I seriously doubt that wood chips were on her mind. It won’t be long before the wood chips are covered over with trees planted by the Natural Resource Group of the Dept. of Parks and Recreation. The ground work preparation having already been done by GBCares, with the elimination of weeds in which ticks had thrived. Slowly, but surely, the people in Gerritsen Beach will see many changes they may or may not agree with, but one thing they have already begun to see is the wild unchecked growth of weeds along parts of Gerritsen Avenue, because of a story that insinuated wrongdoing. The bureaucrats ran for cover, and put a halt to a volunteer system that has kept Gerritsen Beach nicely trimmed for years. If the “investigative reporte” had a real story, how come he hasn’t pursued it further at the Parks Dept. or with the contractor who is under contract to that department?

Since so many people would rather remain anonymous, they should appreciate, the owner of this website doesn’t have to divulge his name either. If you live in Gerritsen Beach, you probably know who “the kid” is. As for his parents being ashamed of him. If he was my son, I wouldn’t be ashamed of him. I would be damned angry with him for his lapses in maturity, and especially the wounding of some great people who have devoted so much time and effort to our community, and the damage he has done to a volunteer program that far excelled most of the volunteer programs in this or most cities in the U.S. (Yes, GBCares).
Apart from that, I would be proud of a son who has the work ethic he has. If I was going to be ashamed as a parent, I would be ashamed, if an adult couldn’t talk to me to try to save my child from getting into trouble that might affect his life forever. A few parents at Kiddie Beach on the day of the picture taking know who they are. (They too should be anonymous). One young man was warned by an adult about a criminal incident, (he denies). It got results that may prove one of the best things that ever happened to the boy. His parents should be ashamed, not the parents of a young man who is trying to make something of himself. We have to pull together as a community. You don’t get extra points on civil service exams or schools for being from Gerritsen Beach, you have to work for it.

@George R. Broadhead, I love “the damage he has done.” That’s like when a student says, “Why did you fail me on that test?” I didn’t fail you…you failed. GB Cares still has not addressed the issue of the Wood Chips. If they did, maybe we could all move on…

@George R. Broadhead, I can not believe that you are blaming one person for single handedly damaging the volunteer program. They are called volunteers because they choose to better their community without asking for recognition or payment. If these same people now choose not to lend a helping hand, that is up to them and not the fault of someone reporting issues as he sees them. If they really cared about this community, as few negative words by a handful of individuals would not matter. Once again, like in preschool, if one student acts up, the whole class is punished. Gerritsen Beach either Cares or Doesn’t Care, they need to make up their minds.

hmmm.. I would absolutely LOVE to see GBCares completely out of the Gerritsen Beach picture for one or two years… No volunteers, no GB games, No Halloween Festival, No Christmas lights, no weeding, no cleaning, no murals, no upkeep, no litter removal, no contact with elected officials, no improvements on Kiddie Beach or the Little League fields…and so on and so forth. At the end of those two years, there would be so much more to do and catch up on. However, maybe these ungrateful slobs (who live in this community and have nothing better to do than go on GB.net and anonymously write such horrible comments about a WHOLE group of volunteers), might just have a little taste of how much the organization actually does for the community. I am so proud of GB Cares and all that it does. People are complaining still about answers over woodchips.. and none have even come close to realizing that GBCares probably isn’t answering because they’re not being asked in an even remotely positive way. If someone came up to me out of nowhere and accused me of being a bad mother.. regardless if they were wrong or right, I would absolutely not feel obligated to defend myself or answer to ubsurd questions about my mothering. If people have questions about GBCares projects.. I believe the members of the board are completely accessible. If anyone has the last GBCares news letter, I believe there is plenty of contact information provided. And if you do decide to ask the questions, maybe try with a little tact. Because for those of you who come onto GB.net and think that THIS account of a certain story is the ONLY POSSIBLE account, you are wrong. There are ALWAYS more than one side to a story. And posting comments on a website in no way makes you someone who cares about your community. If you feel like the woodchips are SERIOUSLY a hazard.. just pick up the phone, make the call, and be proactive in learning the answers to your questions, because obviously GB.net doesn’t have them.

I agree very well written but alot of these anonymous comments come from out of the beach certain city agencys which i will not name that want to stir the pot.
Ihope GBnet does not delete it like he is known to do with his one sided reporting on certain issues like he did with a posting on the comment section of the Boy Scout flag retirement story. I would like to know why he took off that list of known illegal things that other orgaizations got caught doing and things residents do that they didn’t get caught doing yet.
Whats up with that lil Dan ?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

      • @Johnny Walker,

The comments come from mixed locations although I don’t know the percentage of “in the beach” and “out the beach” comments whenever I check on comments they are from the beach.

As for city agencies, most of them have chimed in at least once, some are regular readers. The parks department is the only one who has actually commented on stories.

As for the boy scouts story. I was fed up with instant negative comments and side discussion. I think I removed 4 comments total from that story, I didnt know people noticed and I didnt think it was a big deal.

The comments which I will, I guess repost soon, were:

“fire’s backweeds of anykind are illegal…….”

        and a response

“And so is parking on fire hydrants ,double parking to pick up kids at P.S.277 ,installing and expanding curb cuts for driveways without the proper permits ,parking on the parkland by the soccer feilds not to mention all the complete second floor removal/ renovation without plans and permits that go on in the beach so before we go picking on the boy scouts of all people lets look at the big picture.

How forgetfull of me to leave out the crime of the century THE WOOD CHIPS and of course the work that the GB Little League got caught doing without plans permits and permission on parkland so if we are going to start on the boy scouts lets not forget to go after all the illegal things going on.”

The other ones I removed were removed because they were just dumb.

Researching your comments Johnny, you are a regular commenter and I apologize if removing your comment upset you.

        • Johnny Walker

ok sounds good you may remove it again just was curious how you operated i am not upset negative things are not to good to have out there
