Gerritsen Beach on Radar to Get a “Dog Run”

Gerritsen Beach may be getting a dog run!

At Marty Golden’s town hall meeting there was a group was ‘lobbying’ for a dog run in Marine Park. Dog runs are large, fenced-in areas for dogs to exercise unleashed.

That group brought the issue directly to Julius Spiegel Brooklyn Commissioner of NYC Parks. They were told that since Marine Park already is designated as “off leash” , they would not be able to have both a Dog Run and Off-Leash Hours. They would need to pick one or the other.

Greg Borruso, president of the Marine Park Civic suggested that Gerritsen Beach should be considered as part of Marine Park, and as long as the community is not opposed that a Dog Run should be placed on the Gerritsen side of the Park.

Anyone Opposed?

May I be the first to suggest a location?

Gerritsen Beach is long overdue for a dog run. If done properly, it would get a tremendous amount of use. I hope they build it. I seem to remember not long ago someone set up a half assed one across from the Hibernians along the outfield fence of the Ballfield. Why don’t GB.net set up an online poll??

I tried a number of times to get a dog run. But people in Marine Park shot it down every time.
Then I went to Marty Golden’s office with over 100 signitures – went to meetings and found a place. The parks dept had a problem with it. We need a dog run very badly, off leash hours are very limited. Please keep us informed about this. I will help anyway I can to get this going again.

I wouldn’t mind having a dog run in our area because I like to let my dog off the leash. He is a friendly little guy and I know he wouldn’t harm anyone, but I am nervous that other dogs may not be as friendly and have to stay on alert so an incident doesn’t happen. He listens fairly well off the leash and doesn’t go that far from me, but if something did happened I know that I am the one responsible.

I wouldn’t mind having one at all as long as it didn’t impead on the other amenities of the fields. It would probably help keep the dog owners from bringing their dogs onto the ball fields.

What exactly is a “dog run” and how does it differ from the “off the leash business” at Marine Park?

    • @LQuinlan, A dog run is a SPECIFIC designated fenced in area.
      Off-leash hours are:
Designated Off-Leash Areas: Certain park areas allow dogs to be off-leash from the time the park opens until 9 a.m. AND from 9 p.m. until the park closes. Dog owners/attendants with dogs off-leash in these designated areas must obey all general rules, including having their dog under control at all times, licensing the dog, and carrying proof of the dog’s rabies vaccination. Parks that contain designated off-leash areas are listed by borough below. Reminder: Off-leash rules do not apply to park areas where dogs are strictly prohibited (e.g. playgrounds, tennis courts, athletic fields, and basketball/handball courts).

Thanks for the info. Does anyone have experience with how well dog runs are maintained? I know my neighbors bring their dogs to run around Marine Park and they insist that all the “regulars” clean up after their dogs. I just read that off the leash laws don’t apply to ballfields and yet I always find dogs on the soccer fields in the fall when I get there to paint lines. My neighbors claim that the “deposits” are left there by stray dogs but who can say?

My concerns would be a lot of traffic coming into the neighborhood and the issue of maintenance.

@LQuinlan, Those are the two main concerns. I wouldnt even know where to put this dog run. Maybe by Burnett where those trees are in that abandoned” park. or the woodchips lol

        @LQuinlan,
Other dog runs around the city are maintained by volunteers. Dog runs tend to attract a regular group of dog owners from the neighborhood who appreciate the facility and visit it on a daily basis so they are generally well-maintained by the regular users. The runs I have been to are always staffed by at least one volunteer attendant and there are strict rules regarding acceptable behavior by dogs and their owners.

Don’t we already have enough extra traffic and double parkers on the Ave. from people who come to use the fields from outside the neighborhood? Doesn’t the skate park attract people from all over? Now with a dog run, it will get even worse. I know the fields are parkland and people have a right to use it, but trying to navigate down the avenue ia already enough of a challenge without inviting in a whole new group of people. Put it in Marine Park, or near the Nature Center. Theres alot more parking there.

i think it is a great idea!!! and i don’t think it will add to the traffiic in the beach! what about the area down after the skate park down towards the point??

I would love a dog run but think it would be wonderful if there could be a small dog run and a separate dog run for large breed dogs. It is hard for us owners of small dogs to feel it is safe or wise to allow our little guys to run with the big fellows. I have been to several Manhattan Parks where both runs peacefully exist side by side.

I like it just the way it is.
I walk 2 miles with my dog from a park poor area
to get there 4-5x mornings a week in all kinds of weather so he can get some
    real exercise.

I clean up after my dog willingly, & gladly as the majority dog owners do.
I don’t want parasites to be spread, messes to be
made or have any reason for this privilege , for which I am very grateful, to be terminated.

Strong, fast, energetic & social dogs get some real good running & playing done.
Helps them to be good citizens.

Dog runs are fine for fragile & timid & layed back animals.

And by the way, it would be nice to have a dog run in Gerritsen Beach.
It is not fair to either community, or the surrounding neighborhoods, to consider them as the same
    for political & economic decisions.

The best place for a dog run in the Marine Park area is in the overgrown tangled weed barrier of the Marine Park Golf Course along Avenue V. It is already partly fenced in, is not heavily residential, would not be too close to already existing recreational facilities for established sports or children’s playgrounds. Currently it is a haven for ticks because of the tall, dense weeds. The heavy equipment from Dept. of Highways and/or the golf course, not far down Flatbush Avenue, could also be contracted to routinely mow it short. It is municipal space that has been wasted for years except as a visual barrier to the golfing greens, and a sometimes campground for homeless and illegal dump. The dogs could get a good solid run there, chasing each other or a ball. Then there would be no excuses for loose, unmanaged dogs and their chronically clueless owners.
