The community gardens adjacent to the library on Gerritsen Avenue got its concrete walkway. This will allow more people to enjoy the gardens.

In the interest of “transparency”, the following is how the Community Gardens (both sides of the library) work. First, The Gerrittsen Beach Property Owners Association holds a lease with Brooklyn Public Library. We renewed it recently, and I personally picked up the lease at the main library office in Grand Army Plaza. We named, Donna Davis, Project Manager, because of her devotion to the garden. The concrete walk meets the standard for handicap accessibility; and those using wheel chairs or ‘walkers’ will now be able to enjoy the garden on the Bartlett Place side of the library. The plantings are an ongoing project, and Donna Davis, who does not let the handicap of Parkinson’s deter her in the least, can always use volunteer assistance.
As for the concrete itself: Thanks to Michael Taylor, of GBCares, we were able to review bids for creating the walkway, and are convinced we got the top of line workmanship at the most equitable price. Both the GBPOA and GBCares is splitting the cost of the walkway. It should be noted, that Buddy DeWitt, helped with the pouring of the concrete (he volunteered his time and services at no cost, and with no favors to GBCares). Anyone interested in the cost and more particulars, please attend the next GBPOA meeting, Wed. June 3rd. It is bothersome to have a flag pole without a flag, but that will soon be corrected. The lanyard for raising and lowering our colors is broken, and it is no easy matter finding a way to get it back through the pulley on top of the pole. That will be done soon. It should also be noted that the concrete base has also made the pole more secure. For those of you who saw this old Marine standing guard into the evening, until the concrete set, it was for the obvious reason: to prevent a rash of initials. There were a few young characters who showed up with very long sticks to reach through the gate, only to find that Michael Taylor and I were on duty. That is volunteer cooperation, and the only payback is the benefit to the Community.

Thanks to all who were responsible for this great job. The garden looks so much better with a concrete walkway – and there will be a lot less weeds. Donna is doing such a great job tending to the garden – Thank you Donna! (and George and Mike and Buddy!)

Thanks again Mr. Broadhead. You are really helping the Beach and I think it is great you came back here.

I have a flag that the Community Garden can have. It is about 5′ wide and 3′ tall. I don’t know if this is big enough but they are welcome to it.

Thank you for the offer of the American flag for the Community Garden. We may soon have the lanyard fixed, and ready for a flag raising. Because of the height of the pole, I’m not sure what size flag is most appropriate. Will let you know.
