Residents of Frank Court may finally be getting a solution to the lake that forms every time there is a slight rain.
On May 15th there was an “on the street” meeting held with: residents of Frank Court, DEP, DOT, and State Senator Marty Golden. The Senator had arranged this meeting to expedite a repair.
Some of the people on hand were:
- * State Senator Marty Golden
- Reeves Eisen, Lew Fidler representative and Chief of Staff of Lew Fidler
- George Broadhead, Gerritsen Beach Property Owners
- Jane DeWitt, GB Cares
- Ray Edwards, DOT director of roadway repair and maintenance
- Edmund Eng Deputy director of roadway repair and maintenance
- Director and Assistant Director of DEP Community partnerships
- CB 15 Chairperson Theresa Scavo
- Obviously Frank Court residents between Lois and Seba
The meeting was interesting, at first it was more of the blame game between DOT and DEP, which the Property Owners was promised wasn’t going to happen anymore.
Some of the “solutions” discussed were:
Adding more storm drains to the middle of the block, this was immediately shot down by DEP.
Resurfacing the street, requires DOT capital money.
Street reconstruction, would require street core samples, DOT has it scheduled a number of years from now.
The senator requested, after it was mentioned, to adding 3 or 4 more streets in the old section to an in-need repair list.
George Broadhead, President of the Property Owners was pushing for a two part plan which was an immediate (within 48 hour fix) of the asphalt blocking the storm drain “to help the people” to be repaired. Then to repair the street overall when a plan can be made.
What ended up happening was the Senator thought the DOT and DEP should be giving some time to formulate a plan. The next scheduled meeting is June 12th where they will come back with a plans.

Can you guys show us how to take care of our Sheepshead Bay lakes? This is great work and nice to see how the community comes together to solve these types of problems.

Gladly! Call your representatives, and wait 9 years… This has been a cooperative venture: The great pictures that appeared on this website, showing the flooding on Frank Ct. (one of several Courts suffering from the same problem) . A letter to each resident of Frank Court from the GB Property Owners Assoc.; and fortunately for us, we have 3 exceptional local representatives: State Senator Marty Golden, Assemblyman Alan Maisel, and Councilman Lew Fidler. They do all they can to motivate the bureaucrats, but that isn’t always enough. This was just a ‘recon patrol’, in preparation for the battle. We don’t want WEST NILE VIRUS in Gerritsen Beach because of stagnant rain water that has nowhere to go. (More money has been spent on Gerritsen Avenue over the past few years, for lines, new lines, and now resurfacing and the need for more new lines. Not to mention how much it must have cost for engineers and draftsmen to create plans for a ‘green street’ proposal. All because the community has asked for one traffic light on Gerritsen Avenue). All we are asking for is the re-grading of probably less total miles of roadway in the Courts that are in need of it, than the whole of Gerritsen Avenue. Yesterday, (May 16) I spoke with a DEP ‘grunt’ who was checking the problem areas on the Courts and Avenues. He was doing this in follow-up to letters to DEP from Councilman Lew Fidler. That’s what we are asking for: Action! Not dead-end town hall meetings.

I don’t think George was upset at GB net more upset that dep and dot were giving us definite
answers to the problem! George did a great job speaking for the residents on Frank Court.
Thanks George and you to Dan for posting all the pictures and stories. Will keep you posted
on what goes on.

If I look upset, it is because we had already been told the blockage near the drain would be fixed within 48 hours, and Senator Golden arrived after that statement by Ray A. Edwards, Director of Roadway Repair & Maintenance, and unintentionally gave them more time to engage in approach avoidance.
To review what has happened since the 48 hours was changed to another meeting, June 12th: DEP has been sending agents out to check on problem areas, e.g. flooding on Melba Court. They took action and used a jet hose to flush out a blocked sewer. Only to find it hadn’t done the job. They returned and found the blockage is because of “cement”, assumed to have been dumped down the drain in the past, following some construction job. This sounds like a logical assumption, so now, lets have it corrected! The most significant thing about problems, is that once you know what the problem is, you can solve it…. To give credit, where due, DEP has also checked Lester Ct. Atta boy, DEP.
The people who attended the GBPOA meeting told that they had attended a Town Hall Meeting held at the Blue Star Mothers Hall over 2 years ago; followed by an inspection tour of DEP and DOT officials. That’s two years ago. Nothing happened. Let us ask ourselves the question: What if there was flooding on Congressman Weiner’s street, or in front of Senator Shumer’s apartment building in Park Slope, or Senator Golden’s home in Bay Ridge, or Lew Fidler’s street, or Alan Maisel’s street? Would it take town hall meetings and 2 years (in actuality, the Frank Court flooding has been going on for 9 years). We understand that Borough Commissioner, Marty Markowitz is looking to buy his first home. There is a large (illegally built, over the height limit house next to the corner lot on Frank Ct. and Seba Ave. You could shave some of the top off the roof, Marty, and you might be able to buy the vacant lot next to it, (or have it condemned). The house is in foreclosure and boarded up, but a fine looking ‘starter home). Come on Marty, we need your influence. Buy the house on Frank Court and have the flooding corrected.

This reporter is aware of the ongoing inquiries made on behalf of atv owners, but it is also obvious to most of the community that there are 2 local boys who disregard any authority, and continue to ride on the baseball and soccer fields. One has already caused his father a problem, and if I know my friend, Superman, it won’t be long before he has convinced another father to stick his son’s atv up his ass.

I scooped you, Clark… There has been a quad racing up and down the center of Gerritsen Avenue most of the day. Calls were made to “911″ –a crime in progress– but no response. That little curly-headed lady who always interrupts anyone speaking at the property owners meetings is right. There is no response to 911 calls.

Why would a law abiding parent allow his/her child to ride an atv, mini bike, or whatever on the fields. The only thing the kid learns is that he is above the law & the hell with everything else. If you let your kid have an off road vehicle & allow them to ride it in the beach then you are guilty more than the child. You will be the first to cry that police do nothing, then cry when your child is arrested & the vehicle is confiscated. Enough of having the fields torn up by these spoiled punks.
