The May 6th, Gerritsen Beach Property Owners meeting was all about the usual; Seba Avenue park problems, late night speeding on the avenue, ATV’s & Quads, Paintball, and more importantly the Frank Court ponding, which will now be fixed thanks to Lew Fider, GerritsenBeach.net and the Property Owners.
The meeting in its entirety is available on video. (above)
The new president of the Property Owners, George Broadhead, had some very strong words to say about his plans to improve Gerritsen Beach political clout. He wants Gerritsen Beach “to start to make our voices heard” to get all of the “good things” and attention that all of the other neighborhoods are getting. IE: police enforcement “your going to have to come out to these meetings” IE: CB15, 61st, Property Owners. “We’ve got to get the numbers”.
Frank Court
Lew Fidler stepped in to rectify the situation after an open letter posted on GerritsenBeach.net. Armed with pictures and video, they made calls to the DOT who blamed the DEP, who blamed the DOT. Typical!
The blame games was the wall residents hit when they were calling 311. Lew stepped in and has demanded a joint meeting, where both agencies will go to the site and figure out how to repair the street. Its also worth noting that Marty Golden will be holding a meeting with Frank Court residents on May 15th, Golden was originally approached with this situation by residents a year or so ago after his town hall meeting, Frank Court residents are holding out hope that Lew will pull through for them instead.
Police Report
Notes: Police response times in Gerritsen Beach are atrocious, 25 minutes or more to respond to 911 calls regarding a fight on Ebony and Channel, then there is no record of the call. This is not the first time this has happened, as noted in the meeting. “Nothing in Gerritsen Beach ever gets reported”.
A joint operation between the DEC and NYPD will be held shortly to enforce restrictions regarding unloading and riding ATV’s.

No wonder why nothing gets done. All the complaints regarding the backweeds should be addressed at the 63 precinct meeting. And if you are having a meeting making accusations that the police were called and took 25 mins to show up, bring documentation. Where is the person who actually made the call? Where are the witnesses to how long the fight went on and where are the people who were there when the call was made and the police were being clocked for 25 mins? This is just speculation by people who aren’t even at the meeting.
If you are walking your grandkids you should have a cell phone handy, call 911 and give the location. You may have legitimate complaints but you are looking a little like nothing but complainers with nothing to back you up. Prepare yourself or keep your mouth closed. The lady with the fire and wrestling stories put everyone to sleep and the 61 doesn’t handle that!

If ‘anonymous’ will attend the next GBPOA meeting on Wednesday, June 3rd, the person who witnessed the brawl and made the call, will be in attendance. We will try to get other witnesses to attend, and confirm that a call was made. Since neither you (?) nor I were at the brawl, neither of us can attest to how long it took the police to arrive. We were told 25 minutes, and that it was clocked…. The night before our meeting, I spoke with the officer who usually addresses these issues at our meetings, to give him a “heads-up”. The reason being, he can’t be expected to have every detail for every incident when he comes, so it was appropriate to ask that he be prepared for that matter. He gave us his honest knowledge on the matter. I attended, and will continue to attend the 61st Council meetings, and from notes of the last meeting, there may be a communication glitch, that is not intentional. We will also be attending the 63rd Precinct Council meetings, because I don’t see a record that they have been attended by us in the past. There is more, but I’ll spare you. We can only hope you are not upset because you are the wrestler who is setting the fires.

Further to the 61st Precinct… There was a super-quick response earlier (around 5 pm) when two young boys saw an AK-47 in the water at low tide. The location of the weapon was just below Gain Court. The police officer, from the 61st, who responded, Officer Samulyn (sp?) took every precaution to assure the safety of the young boys, while he retrieved the weapon. It was real, so he called for officers involved with ordnance. They confirmed it was unloaded, real, and that the registration marks were visible. Just as they were about to leave the scene, along came “Casey the Crime Photographer”. Obviously, there will be more to this story.

Thanks for posting the meeting. I think the video shows how important it is to have more people attend – myself included.
It’s pretty obvious that streets should slope in toward the middle just enough to have the water move freely toward drains placed slightly below the street level. On too many Gerritsen streets however the water simply can’t move properly because of improperly placed drains and uneven road. In front of my own home rain water ends up in a puddle and dirty water ends up splashing onto my property. I think Gerritsen, with these issues and so many civil servants, is entitled to enough federal stimulus dollars to have its streets repaved properly – not just Frank Court. I see many streets around the City being redone without real need.
Anyway – thanks again for posting.

In response to at least two other questions that arose at the meeting, we are passing along the information received from Joan Byrnes, Director of Community Affairs for State Senator Marty Golden’s office: 1. The sinkhole located at Joval and Everett was reported to DEP and it is to be taken care of as soon as possible. The sink hole just outside of the Tamaqua parking lot has been filled in.
2. Another follow-up was made to DOT about a request for a traffic light at Florence and Gerritsen (Senator Golden made an official request, February, 2008, but it was denied). There is a limit to requesting an investigation by DOT for a traffic light–to once every 18 months. However, there are no term limits….

When is Tracy Realty on the corner of devon and Gerritsen Ave going to fix their awning? It looks terrible. It needs to be recovered. It looks worse than graffiti!

“That woman” is the Pastor of St. James Church. If you take pride in your ability as a wrestler, you should also take pride in being a person of some character. There are those among us who do not like the limitations on use of what used to be our personal playground–the back weeds–but unfortunately, it is now a Park, with legal restrictions. You may not agree with what was written, but you would be more of a man, if you took a moment to write a simple apology.

why would i apologize? she stated things that are not true. i stand by my statement. when did i i say anything about the limitations of the weeds? you just blew things out of proportion. i just want it to be known that her statements were not true.
