For those that done know, Gerritsen Creek is a no wake zone which prohibits Jetskiing, waterskiing, and wakeboarding in the area. Basically no anything of any kind.
This is meant to protect the wildlife (and plant life) here including the migratory and local birds, terrapins and fish. Consequently because of the wildlife there are also a good amount of photographers in the area that are shooting wildlife and love to post pictures of the no wake zone offenders.
The photographers know that there are limited resources to police the area and feel that taking pictures of the offenders is there only recourse.
This happened last summer as well with Salt Marsh Hall of Shameand Salt Marsh Hall of Shame Continues.
Photographer VictorSiegfried of our forum posted a handful of photographers of recent offenders. Which I could only assume is the first batch.
He stated that he brought the attention to the local park rangers and was told that there is currently a plan to stop all these activities for good with the help of the US Coast Guards and NYPD harbor patrol.
Here are some of his pictures: Check out the rest of the pictures on the forum.

Here is a video of last summer:
Jet Ski In Gerritsen Beach from Gerritsen Beach on Vimeo.ow,

what”s next they going to say you can’t drive your boat? this is a water front community, water activities is what goes on around here during the summer..saying you can’t water ski, jet ski and do other summer activities is just ridiculous..these birds and wildlife are taking over all the beaches and now there taking over our back yards too. :idontgetit:

Geez! What’s the big deal? No one is saying you can’t enjoy your water craft activities. They’re just saying you have to take it a little further from shore. Every water front community in the country has no wake zones. Why do you have to fight it and say “boo hoo” those birds and the NYPD are spoiling my fun? Owning a boat is like owning a car.

This is a waterfront community. I say GO BOATERS. Their rights are of more importance than some birds, especially when Gateway Park contains thousands of acres that are off-limits to humans!
Oh, and I hope those boaters come after you next time you play Peeping Tom on them.

I have to commend the photographers because these are really great pictures. BTW, no one is playing Peeping Tom. Those photogs are down there enjoying a little bit of nature in the middle of a large city and I think it’s really cool that that we live this close to a natural refuge for birds, plants and any other creature that makes this area their home. I think it’s selfish that people who have enough money to own a speed boat think it’s OK to disrupt the these habitats. Take the water craft into deeper waters and respect the environment. Yeah, I know I’m a #@$% and a $#@% so save it and, if you must, write a proper response to this comment.

I was always under the assumption that the “no wake zone” started at the end of the Ave. into the canals, because high wakes cause docked boats to smash up against the walls of the dock.
Victor Siegfried needs to get a grip. This is ridiculous.

I had my first boat in 1983 when i was 8. the no wake zone is from the end of gerritsen ave.
Ihave been kneeboarding and waterskiing around mau-mau island my whole life. Gerritsen beach used to have a water skiing team and they used to ski around the island. the reason the island was so good was because it dont get to rough for the skiiers! I now have 2 boats and i will always drive around the island til i die . and yeah you photographers who just found gerritsen beach, KISS MY IRISH ASS !!!!! Im gonna wash u off the shores with 8' waves lmao

I agree, keep the wakes away from the docks & Kiddie Beach, & be respectful of other craft. Go & fun as long as these rules are obeyed.

I’ve been threatened with summonses for my remote control boat..Also I was told by a park ranger that the no wake zone is between Ave U and the first set of pileons(near the nature center)..And past the first court headed towards TQ..I think that these “officials” have no clue as to what is really legal and not when it comes to the creek…I say let em ride. Also I was told that I would get a summons over jet skiers, etc. because I was easier to catch, and parks only has canoes..nonsense

nick lak you right there is a sign by the point and it is to slow boaters down so they don’t make big waves going into the canal! now there saying no wake for boaters and jet skiers etc…maybe people can ski on the sand, no wait that’s for the birds, rats and possums.

I don’t own a Jet Ski or Speedboat but wouldn’t mind doing so one day when I can finally afford it. I think it obviously needs to be made clear what a ‘no wake zone’ actually is and what its boundaries are – community input would also be fair when it’s being set. Distribute these rules and boundaries and debate it in a community forum. I also wouldn’t mind taking pictures of the natural scenery in my own community backyard but would hate it if some defensive boaters/jet skiers try to harass me and my right to do so.
In my opinion, the wildlife is nice but I think the danger to it posed by boats is sadly exaggerated for various political reasons. At the same time, however, I think boaters/jet skiers should make sure to respect those in the water, as well as motorless and docked vehicles for safety and plain old courtesy. This beach belongs to us all and there should be no reason why it can’t be shared by nature lovers, photographers and boaters/jet skiers in a fair and common-sense way.

Good point Nick. The no wake rules are not just for the environment. Wakes can endanger other recreational boaters, including kayakers and rowers. They can also lead to damage and decay to waterfront structures such as marinas, docks, and piles. It’s hard to pull my boat out when these guys are riding around like maniacs on jet skis. It’s hard to pull onto Gerritsen Avenue sometimes too cause they’re riding their dirt bikes.

Be careful with your boat on the shore at the point. Harbor is out there :)
I mean out of my dock!

I don’t know much about this but can’t they put up something to slow down the wave like a speed bump ?

What would be the hard earned benifit of living in a area such as GB if we could not use our surrounding waterways for all of our different enjoyments, the people complaining about boats, jet ski’s etc, should use there power to prevent the people hanging out on the beach at the point and back the weeds from leaving there trash behind. We all work hard and lately one of the only nice things GB has left is our surrounding waterways. I personally have never seen a bird die from a boat wake, I have seen several from what appears to be from eating garbage or left behind fishooks with bait on them.

The no wake zone was ALWAYS at Abbey Court. About 50 year ago the sign read “SLOW 5 MPH”. The post was cut from an old telephone pole. It came out of the sand about 15 feet high during low tide. It was put up by the residents of Abbey Court. Some of them used it as a mooring.

Ditto to the need for clarification by local authorities. Oh on second thought, aren’t NYC Parks considered “Authorities”? Okay, maybe it is hard to take Park’s seriously unless they are caring a gun and a ticket book. Do they get to give out tickets and shoot litterbugs? Seriously, if NYPD and the Coast Guard get involved and we all get the boundaries of the No Wake zone from them this debate should be put to rest. No?
