I think the mayor should issue an order for ALL schools to be close one week to minimize the risk of spreading this extremely contagious disease. Closing a school here and there will not stop the spread of this disease because many families have children going to different schools.

If all schools were closed for a week, then the students would have to make up those missed days in June. Then, the students would have to work in extreme heat….so…..if you are sick just stay home. People are making a big deal over a disease that can be handled by washing their hands and being cautious.

In a perfect world I would certainly agree with you.
Because I have inside information of what actually goes on in a classroom, my wife is a teacher, the reality is that many children, when sick, are sent to school. Many children, too many children, come from one parent or two income parent’s homes. When an unexpected situation arises that the parents are not prepared for, unfortunately they will take the easy way out and send the children to school with sniffles and fevers and then spread the infectious virus every time they wiped their nose with their sleeve or their hands and then pass it on to other children when they interact with them. So far the infectious disease has been mild and has not caused any major medical problems. This virus has been known to mutate and can create a situation like we now have in Mexico.
Personally I prefer to side with caution.

what do kids do when they are off from school? they play together in each other’s backyard or worse at the park. so it’s less likely to get sick if you are outside of school? i don’t think so.

    To Good Neighbor:
Bishop Kearney is a high school, I highly doubt that the students will be “playing in each other’s back yard” or “the park”.

The more people that are exposed to it, the higher the risk of more people getting meaning that there’s a higher risk of this minor epidemic permeating into a more major crisis. Being that I go to Kearney, I’m glad that my school is taking precautions, because I certainly do not want to spend my summer stuck in bed sick with the swine flu when I can be visiting colleges and prepping for my senior year.
