I realized the other day how much better the ave. used to be when it was two lanes. Without the lines down the middle it was like old times driving 2 wide on the ave. and I gotta say it was nice.
I have to say the streets look worse now where its completed then before the repavement! They did a pathetic job, the streets look as if they are in 2 pieces and if you look down by Lois ave they broke the sewer drain. Yea real good job DOT. Horrible!
It’s a little over two weeks with no lines in the street and were still alive. Fantastic!
I haven’t decided what’s worse. The pathetic use of street paint to control traffic or to put up a few stops signs along the Ave.
Any thoughts out there?
I haven’t seen anyone stop at a stop sign on the side streets yet – has anyone else. In the morning and evening they will run right over you to come out of Cyrus Ave.
I was being a bit facetious with that observation.
You are right though.
Living around the corner from 277, if I had a nickel for every time someone blew that light, I’d be vacationing in Europe about now.
From Bijoe to the point is about the longest run I could think of in Brooklyn that does not have at least one traffic light or stop signs. I wish someone could tell me why the city hasn’t acted upon that considering some of the other avenues in our area (Ave‘s. W, U, T, and S) that are inundated with stop signs and traffic lights.
GBnet, any thoughts on this subject?
Thanks GBnet,
I concede to your expertise on the subject of red light requirements.
Although I don’t feel comforted with the federal government’s take of what they feel necessitates the need for a red light, especially given the circumstances we have here in GB. We have a unique situation given that all the play areas are on one side of the Avenue and the residents (children) are on the other side with no safe intersections to cross beyond Bijou Avenue.
So the government’s response is to draw lines in the street that create simulated one lane routes for cars and buses to use in hopes that no one would drive on the restricted center of the avenue when traffic is moving slow. I feel better already.
I don’t live in GB but from what I can see from other posts, there is an issue with speeding and drag racing. Have speed bumps ever been considered for the Avenue?
THE LINES ON THE AVENUE: There has been ongoing concern about the confluence of lines on Gerritsen Avenue, from Bijou Avenue to the turn at Avenue W. The problem has usually had to do with double and triple parking of vehicles when dropping-off or picking up children from school. When the avenue was first changed from two-lanes to a single lane to and from, the community was told to give it a chance, and if anything needed changing, it would be ‘tweaked’. It was tweaked once, to allow for bus traffic, and better traffic flow to the right of the turn lane at Avenue W. Nevertheless, from Bijou to Ave. W is usually a mess. Following up on the expressed concerns of residents who called me, today, we had a “conference call”, with Keith Bray of DOT, thanks to Reeves Eisen, of Councilman Lew Fidler’s office. I asked that one simple thing be done: Stop the painting of the traffic lines on Gerritsen Avenue at Bijou Ave., until the engineers, or whomever, came to Ave. W. and Gerritsen and physically watched the traffic flow…. Looking at a plan on a draftsman’s table does not tell the real story. As of now, the lines have been outlined on the avenue, but we will call again to make our concerns known. We must each be proactive. Call DOT at (718) 222-7290/91 or 93.

None of the other intersections ever meet the federal red light requirements.
There isn’t enough traffic, but there is a 25mph speed limit.

I think it looks good & will look better when the bright new paint is on. They should also do the Avenues – they need help.
