PS 277: No Idling With a Bow On It!

DSC_2894

A new sign popped up on the 277 grounds “NO IDLING CHILDREN BREATHING”. While I’m all for clean air for children to breathe, I’m more for saving money by avoiding fines. The city decided to cut the idling time from three minutes to 60 seconds in a school zone. They also gave the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Department of Sanitation, along with the Police and Transportation Departments, to issue summonses, appearance tickets and violation notices for engine idling.

Watch out if your one of the parents who double park, you could get hit up with a few HEAVY taxes fines. This new law the fines range from $220 to $2,000 for repeat offenders.

This is one of those times when I think the city officials are treating us more like criminals then as taxpayers who elected them to represent us, as New York city residents.
Continuing to find more and more ways to separate us from our money while voting themselves raises and perks. As someone who voted for Bloomberg in the last two elections, I find he and the city councils decisions of late have been detrimental for the working class citizens of this city. Circumventing the two-term limits that we overwhelmingly voted for shows disrespect and contempt for the very people who voted them into office.

Please, Mr. Mayor, explained to me why my vote for term limits means less then when I voted for you for mayor?

I think it is a shame people have to be told to shut their engines off after a few minutes. Use your common sense.

I think the real culprits of producing dirty air are the yellow school buses. The black exhaust that spews out of the tail pipes of just about everyone of them is disgusting and I really don’t understand why the city doesn’t address this problem. This city has one of highest asthma rates among children in the country and yet the BOE tolerates these filthy buses.

    1. I’m not 100% on this but as I read it it includes buses. However it includes something about keeping the passengers at a comfortable temperature which I think means A/C & heat.

      I’m working on confirming that.

I believe the signs were meant for the buses. When the windows are open in the school, the exhaust hits the inside of the school, putting the lungs of our little blessings in jeopardy.

Good thinking PS277! Thank you for proptecting our little ones.

IDLING IS NOT MEANT FOR THE BUSES IT’S MEANT FOR CARS AND THOSE SIGNS WENT UP ALL OVER THE CITY, IT’S NOT A NEW LAW…IT’S JUST BEING ENFORCED MORE…IDLING IS AN EXPENSIVE SUMMONS AND THIS IS THE CITY’S WAY OF GETTING MONEY!

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    1. It is meant for buses. The signs did not go up all over the city. It is a new law. It is not being enforced more, enforcement is a problem hence why parks and sanitation can issued tickets. Anything else?

I wouldn’t say its an expensive summons, but you are right, it is a way for the city to make money, that’s why I said a tax above.

      1. anon says:

        it’s not new

I understand that people have the right to do as they wish with their own bodies, but why are they smoking over their strollers and mine? I choose not to expose my children to second hand smoke, nor do I smoke myself being pregnant. Also, why do all these inconsiderates flick their ashes wherever they please? Do you know how many times ashes have landed in my 2 yr old sons mouth? I think it’s disgusting. Isn’t their some kind of law in effect that there is no smoking around schools and playgrounds? If not their should be. Smoking is as bad for little lungs as exhaust is. Stop being selfish and put our children first. Your child didn’t ask to be put here, you put them here, so give them a fighting chance in life.

The no smoking signs have been up in front of the school. Mysteriously, they are removed. Look today, they are up again. Again, it’s common sense. You do have to leave room for the people that just don’t agree with you. These are the people who , both Mom & Dad smoke in their houses in front of their kids. I know, we grew up that way for years.
