P.S. 277 Can’t Say You Weren’t Warned

DSC_2188

Mrs. Fish warned the ENTIRE school by sending out a letter. GerritsenBeach.net warned you. Still… you didn’t care.

Now, three $115 double parking tickets were issued during dismissal at P.S. 277. Two inside the thick solid white line, and one in front of the P.S. 277 playground. They were only issuing tickets if you were double parked and no one was in the car.

Parking within the thick solid white line is only supposed to be a drop off and pick up zone. Example: 15 minutes tops without leaving your car double parked with no one inside.

Favorite line from a parents: “This is F#$!@$# nuts, what are we supposed to do?”

Everyday? Do we really want cops everyday? That’s not reasonable.

I would be happy with a completely random enforcement, lets say once or twice every month or two.

And you sound like one of those small minded parents who have a sense of entitlement to break the law and inconvenience people who don’t have to shuttle rug rats. Kids in the old days were walked to school, I have passed while parents were dropping off the little ankle biters and none of them looked like they were going to work. Most of them looked like burning a few calories by walking wouldn’t hurt them, dressed in their finest sweats looking like they just rolled out of bed. Lazy bastards!

Get over yourself, you can’t break the law just because you’re a parent, get over yourself you self serving, selfish moron.

Obviously you did not pay attention to what i wrote and instead you just want to use this site to rant and rave without using any of your small brain power. I NEVER park illegally, and it is apparent from the responses to the ticketing that the people commenting do not have to deal with the school drop offs. If you did, you would have been crazed this morning when the entrance door did not open at 8am like it is supposed to and parents had to wait until it opened at 810, by that time, the police had started to issue tickets. Now are those parents supposed to leave their 5 and 6 and 7 year olds on the street alone? use your head before you respond, but that might take a while from the sound of you

You wouldn’t have that problem if you left a little earlier and found a legal spot and walked your 5 or 6 or 7 year old to the door. And if you stand there for 10 mins waiting, you spend time with your kid without being stressed about getting a ticket. Common sense eh?

      My Dear “a parent says”
No mudslinging here, I will try to appeal to your common sense.
I guess I’m one of those “Clueless” you spoke of because I’ve been complaining about the situation at 277 for years. Yes, I do have kids and I also took them to school. (never by car). I’m also aware that percentage wise, very few of the parents are showing such blatant disregard for laws that are in place to PROTECT people like you and me. I’m assuming you’re a parent that has little time on his/her hands. I find that interesting because I have observed on a daily basis many of the parents who arrive being 25-30 minutes before dismissal, just so they could jockey into a favorable parking position. So much for not so much leisure time. They also leave their cars and talk about their educational political agendas with other parents while their cars are double and triple park at the bus stop across the street and on Bijou Avenue under the no parking sign.
The person I feel the most sorry for is the over work crossing guard who must oversee three crossing lanes while her vision is restricted by the illegally parked cars at the bus stop. Her problems are compounded by the parents who ignore the traffic light and cross the Avenue with their children, further exasperating the situation. Also on many occasions I’ve found myself stopped at the intersection and unable to make a right turn on to Bijou because an unattended car parked on the corner in front of a fire hydrant while another car is stopped waiting for the light turned green to enter the Avenue, all this while the crossing guard is trying to maneuver 50 children through three crosswalks. Talk about clueless????

    To whom it my concern,

For all that say we as parents are braking the law by double parking to pick up our children, you are all right.

But for years the police department has given what is considered a curtesy between the time of 3 to 4pm in allowing us parents to pick up our kids at a time that takes 30 min or so at schools in the NYC area.
. You all complain to the NYPD because you don’t like being inconvenienced on your daily tips to were ever you go at a time when we have to pick up our children.

I understand this but how are the kids going to be hit by a car if the parent takes them out of the car on the sidewalk side ( assuming there is a smidge of common sense). Most parents do this. I did this when my kids were young. Now that they are older I drop them off around the corner and let them walk by themselves.

That courtsey that was given has been taken advantaged of. The same way you punish your kids when they take advantage is now happening to you. I say thank god, if this is what it takes to keep the kids an parents safe on Gerritsen I say give out more tickets. Maybe if the parents get together and ask Mrs. Fish if she can request a second drop off area by the park be put in. I don’t mean in front where the bus stop is, but on the side and designating the first 10 back in parking spots for drop off and pick up only with a 15 minute limit in effect during school hours things would go much more smoothly in the morning and afternoon.

Alot of what has been said is very true. But there is no respect for the law in GB from the parents or the children, because there are alot of families that are cops, or related to cops. That does not give you a golden ticket to do as you please with no regard to others. I have seen parents (white mini van) getting to school at 1:30 to get their personally reserved spot because they cannot walk 2 or 3 feet without getting out of breath. And it is these same people who sit on the school board that should show a good example and do the right thing. When Sharon was there (the former parent coordinator) she would be at the curb every morning, no matter what the weather, taking the children off the bus and out of parents cars, and watching them or walking the smaller ones into school. And there was usually never a backup of cars, becuase you pulled up, didn’t even have to get out of your car because she opened the door, helped the kids out and closed the door again so you could just pull away. Stop being inconsiderate, show your kids a good example and put their safety first. There is so much me me me and if you don’t like it move attitude, what example does it set for our children. I have 3 children, and another issue that peeves me is parents smoking over their babies strollers. You have every right to do as you please with your children, but please don’t blow your smoke in my babies face, or carelessly flick your ashes into my stroller. If you want to give your kids asthma, or whatever, then I am sorry for you, but please don’t do it to my baby! His life is precious to me. That should be the schools next goal, enforcing no smoking in front of the school, and no idleing cars.

They make sure their kids are in the best classes, get the best teachers, best parts in plays, get to go on class trips, etc. When my last baby is finally old enough for school, i will run and show how to organize a pta and welcome ALL parents, not just certain ones, and work together with parents to do what is best for the school

I just don’t understand why this much effort isn’t put into stopping the racing up and down the avenue all night long. Or, if everyone is so concerned about the kids, how about a light on Channel?? We’ve got plenty of other issues in this community that I feel are so much more dangerous. I just wish that same cop would sit on the avenue every night. The amount of motorcycles, cars, four wheelers that race up and down all night long is disgusting. PS 277 also issued a note about “stop and drop” However, the doors were not open on time for the parents to do that. Not the parents fault, but because it was the schools error, it’s ok? Everyones situation is different. Not one of us should judge who walks and who doesn’t. Rule breakers should be penalized, end of story. Dropping your children off in the morning, following the RULES that the PRINCIPAL asked of us is NOT a cause for all this backlash. However, if she wants her rules followed she should at least be prompt.

To all you assholes above, yes I did say assholes. give me a freaking break. You have jumped from every subject imaginable. Let me please address a few because I just can’t stand it anymore. The Parent Coordiators job was not to go outside and pull your children out of your car, walk them to the door, etc etc. That was nice of Sharon to do but she overextended herself. Period the end on that one. Mrs. Pat Rego, who picks up her grandchildren is disabled. Where is her disabled parking spot in front of the school? None. that’s probably a no no for the Dept of Education. We’ll leave that alone because that will never get done. Lets stop picking on the old people. after all, it is you young ones that keep making the U turns, having your kids hang out the side of your mini van when you run from door to door because they closed in your face, yes I have seen that, and it’s you young ones that park half way in the middle of the street and than shoo your kids along in front of traffic to get into school. As far as the PA, yes folks it is a Parent Association. NOT A Parent Teacher Assocation. 450 kids in the school, countless, countless, probably too much paper work, going home and nobody knows it’s a PA not a PTA???? Wow, that is why there are only 10 people that give a shit and show up at the PA meetings. And by the way, those people are hard working individuals who got elected, yes, there was a big process call and election. It was advertised, yes advertised is a big word, and everything. Approx 10 or 12 people came out for that one. Can you say D E M O C R A C Y? This current PA has raised more money for PS277 that any in the past. That is not a dig to any of the other prior members just a mere fact. Nobody gets perks, better classes, more trips, are you insane? This is the Dept of Education we are talking about. Here’s a dollar, get a clue. By the way, PA elections are coming up. Anybody want to run???? I didn’t think so. Mrs. Foti is to be commended for the great job she is doing. Let’s jump back to parking, Mrs. Fish and Mrs Kennedy part right in fron or across the street. All the other teachers follow suit or park on Aster, Bevy and Celeste. That then frees up appros 20 spots for the 300 people that need to pick up their children. Don’t you guys get it, there is no answer. None that will ever work. None that will ever make people happy. These complaints have been happening since the school opened. They get worse every year because the population explosion gets worse. Why you people are having more than one child anyway is amazing.

I got lost around # 12 I think, what was the original topic anyway? everyone just started name calling and picking on one another and blaming everyone else for what goes on. Then we have the group who check for spelling errors so they can pick on someone for that if nothing else. The bottom line is we are each responsible for our own kids and our own actions. If you wanna keep double and triple parking by the school, you will run the risk of a ticket. If you are one of the parents who drop in the street and run off, you may run the risk of your child getting injured or killed by another vehicle whose driver dosen’t expect to have a child run past them out of the street. I wish there were space for everyone by the school but there is not and there will never be so forget it. Some parents can walk their child to school because of their schedule and some can not, thats the way it is. We each have to take what is there for us when it comes to pickups and dropoffs, try and do the right thing and park legally, somewhere close hopefully but maybe not. Some mornings I get lucky and some I dont also but you have to take it in stride. No one is entitled to a guaranteed spot but some get there early and grab one and sit there, nothing anyone else can do about it. Some of us get there right as our child is coming out, gotta make the best of it and not endanger the kids, they are the most important. Ok, got that out of my system, how about we all start showing up at PA meetings, myself included, and support them and the school.

No one wants to inconvenience themselves a little bit by parking out of a hazardous spot and walking? How is this even an issue? When a child gets seriously hurt, dare I say killed, by the hazardous situation that is caused by the “responsible” adults, will it then change one’s attitude? It will be too late then. Wisen up people. An ounce of prevention is worth a ton of cure.
