What do you get when you park a patrol car with flashing lights at the PS 277 entrance? A lot of freaked out parents! but obviously not all got the message.
Some parents heeded our earlier warning and avoided the area by parking further away from 277, or dropping off their kids within the solid white lines and not sticking around to chit-chat, pulling away.
There was a good number of parents still double parking, making U-turns, all in front of an officer. What happened to them you ask? Well nothing… turns out the officer is just going to sit in his idling patrol car. Maybe just having a presence is “enforcement”.
At the last Property Owners meeting it was said that a traffic/moving violation would have to be witness by an officer, what good is having an officer present, if he’s not going to walk around, or enforce anything once in a while?
The whole situation might be a work in progress but my favorite moment came when someone said “I would stay and chat with you but I’m afraid of getting a ticket.”
Update: Dismissal
Same thing, different time, more proof . This time a guy that got out of his car to curse me out for stopping for a school bus stop sign. People are amazing.

Someone blew by the bus, while an officer witnessed it. I love selective enforcement. Why even call it enforcement when its just a presence?
Update: Letter (March 4th) Mrs. Fish
As you know double and triple parking is a serious problem in front of our school and across the street, in the bus stop at arrival and dismissal time. We have received
numerous complaints from many of you and from other members of the Gerritsen Beach community. I am once again asking your cooperation to solve this issue which affects the safety and well-being of our children. When driving your child to school, please stop long enough to drop off your child and proceed so that other parents may do the same. When picking up your child, I urge you not to park illegally. Do not park in the city bus stop, in the school bus stops and/or double or triple park in front of the school. In addition to being illegal it also presents a serious safety hazard for our children.
After receiving many complaints from parents and members of the Gerritsen Beach community, Community Affairs Liaison, Police Officer Grant of the 61·t Precinct, has
informed me that beginning next week, traffic violations will be issued for the above mentioned infractions. I would not like to see any of you receiving a summons, but more importantly, I want to avoid any of our children becoming seriously injured.I thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

It’s nice to see a community come together to keep our children safe. LOL

Nothing is going to change until someone gets hurt. I don’t wish it on anyone but if you want to drop off your kid and make sure they are safe, drive around the corner and drop them off by the park. It will take you a block out of your way but the kids will be safe. Let the kids walk the 100 feet to the school it is not going to hurt them. Yes I am a parent, my son graduated from 277 a few years ago.

Keep up the good work GB Net. You are right about this issue and the ATV issue. Where has common sense gone?

That’s a great solution but what if your kids are 5 or 6 years old. Is there parking at that corner so that you can walk them to the front door?

On that block is the back in only parking that most of the teachers use. There should be spots available if not, it is alot safer to double park there than on the avenue. It also saves the hassle of making a u-turn in the middle of the avenue.

Your right bagels, 277 should have someone out side the school to help the kids get out of the car so the parents can just drop and go. What is that parent coordinator doing?? We have to help each other out.

The other parent coordinator used to do this (Sharon). A stop, drop and roll situation. She was out there every morning without fail.

i heard 312 has a drop off where someone helps the children out of the car and watches them enter the building. The parent I know there is very happy.

I do not condone parents who are reckless by the school and that absolutely should be stopped. However, not all of us are “lazy”. I happen to drop off my second grader before bringing my infant to daycare. For me, it’s just easier to stop and let my child out and run into the building. Today, in the rain. I parked 2 blocks away, took out my carriage, put my sleeping 6 month old in the carriage, put the rain cover on, took my 7 year old out, and ran to the school. By the time I got back to my car, my pants and shoes were soaked and so was my carriage. I then had to load everything back into the car and put my baby into the car seat a second time. Something most infants DO NOT enjoy. This for me was a totally wasted and stressful 20 minutes. Isn’t there an easier solution? A drop off line? Someone enforcing traffic violators? I just cannot see that parents dropping their kids off in the morning is such a horrible offense. On that note, where are the police when cars are drag racing up and down the avenue all night? Or when there are a bunch of drunk lunatics hanging out on every corner causing trouble? Every single night all I hear is screetching and LOUD motorcycles and 4 wheelers. Priorities…

I think the priority is that small children do not get hit by cars because no one can see them due to double parking. As annoying as it may have been, if your 20 minute ordeal saved a potential life, it was worth it.

Do you know any of the parents in your childs class. You could possibly car pool and you wouldn’t have to take your child out of the car seat. The other parent could walk the second grader and all you would have to do is drop the other parent off. Should be on your way and take a lot less time than twenty minutes.

How about dropping off the baby first at daycare?

My God people…get over it. Yes you have to take your smaller children out of the car to drop your school age children off. This is life. Stop being lazy. Your actions can seriously hurt others…get it? Just like you have to take your sleeping child out of the car to run in stores…it would be easier to lock the car and run in…but it is unsafe and illegal!! I take my infant in and out of the car every day to drop my 7 yr old off at school everyday. Its not fun. This is life. Its my job.

Unfortunately the cop was supposed to be a deterent. He just sat there and never got out of his car. In the morning and in the afternnon, parents double parked made U turns and did some crazy things. Not sure why he allowed this but, there haven’t been back.

They were out again today in full force. Did any one see all the cars they pulled over for U turns, or all the tickets they gave out for double parked cars. Wake up Gerristten Beach these are your children, WHY would you ever want to put them in harms way. Please as a prarent of this community stop trying to hurt the children with you wreackless driving.

P.S. Just wanted to say once again there was nothing done about the parking or u turns this morning. The cops (TWO cars this time) just sat there to see what was going on. LOL Way to look out for the kids

MY SON AND TWO OTHER THIRD GRADERS WERE ALMOST HIT BY A CAR TWO WEEKS AGO. THEY CROSSED AT THE LIGHT, WITH THE CROSSING GUARD ON BIJOU AVENUE. THE CARS WERE TRIPLE PARKED IN THE BUS STOP. ONE OF THESE TRIPLE PARKED CARS GOT THEIR CHILD AND PROCEEDED TO GO THROUGH THE RED LIGHT AND ALMOST HIT THESE CHILDREN AS WELL AS THE CROSSING GUARD. I CALLED THE PRECINCT. INSTEAD OF EVERYONE COMPLAINING AND DOING NOTHING CALL THE 61ST PRECINCT. ASK FOR SGT. DOYLE OR POLICE OFFICER GRANT. MAYBE IF THEY GET ENOUGH CALLS THEY WILL HAVE THE OFFICER GET OUT OF HIS CAR AND ACTUALLY TICKET THESE PEOPLE WHO ONLY CARE ABOUT THEIR CONVENIENCE AND NOT THE SAFETY OF CHILDREN. THE PHONE NUMBER IS 718-627-6611

Are you kidding me…you are trying to justify people double and triple parking to get their kids. They obstruct the view of the drivers trying to get past the school. Kids trying to cross to get to their parents car cannot be seen. Like I said in a previous post…go a block out of the way and park on the side street where you have to back in to the spot and walk around the corner to get your kid or have your child meet you.

You can park by your house and walk up to the school to get your children. Would you rather put other children in harms way that to leave you house an extra 15min. earlier. It is illigal to double and triple park. Park your car some were and get your kids.

Where is the the crossing guard?????? She’s always late or never there. The parents are partly guilty, but should not get all the blame!!!!!

Are you for real? The school crossing guard is there to walk your kids across the street, not park your dam car! Park legally and stop blaming others. You parents claim to be so perfect, why don’t you all get together and take turns escorting the kids into and out of the school building. Put up or shut up.

All the cars double parked in the morning make it a pain for us and city buses that have to drive by for the rest of us who have to work, park your car and get out, the exercise will be good for you and the kids. The rain never was a problem when I walked my kids from my parked car ( in the courts) to the door of the school. We did it every school day rain, snow or cold for 6 years.
