Remember Good Ol’ Green Streets? It was that proposal to put a concrete “curb” down the center of Gerritsen Avenue, if you remember it failed…miserably, flames should of been involved to show how much the proposal failed.
Anyway check out the original post here: Green Streets Dead and Check out the Green Streets Meeting Photo Gallery

Here is the actual moment Marty Golden killed Green Streets, for the sake of the DOT:

And people are actually proud of this?

Getting trapped behind a double parked car or behind a bus traveling at 10mph… Ah, but the poorly up-kept greenery running down the middle of the avenue will calm all drivers… NOT.

And what a sin, those poor U-Turning and triple parking parents at 277, whatever will they do? Probably run right over it, curb plants and all!

Not traffic calming- traffic jamming. Not more greenery-more trash and weeds. Who would maintain it? You? Gerrittsen Cares does a great job, its not easy to put together those events, but they have a limited number of people who regularly give time. Ditto for GBPOA. And all the other great groups that do alot. They kept saying that the Parks dept. would maintain it but anyone who has lived here for any amount of time knows the truth. When the city budgets get cut, we are like the first to go. Anyone who remembers the old park on Seba Ave., Needle Park, knows that what happened to that park was losing the parkie that used to come down regularly to clean it, from 277 park. 277 had a parkhouse and a full time guy. Then in the 70′s, during the last city fiscal meltdown they got rid of the parkie. Seba Park was vandalized completely and the parkhouse was burned down in 277 park. That park also became unusable due to glass, trash and broken rides. Yeah, you could say that the kids in the community destroyed it , but anything like that needs maintainence and the truth is that the City abandoned both of those parks. Thats just one thing wrong with the Greenstreets idea, another thing was that emergency vehicles couldn’t get thru if that only lane was blocked. Say that one lane was blocked by an accident and your house was on fire in the old section, would you want them to have to back out and go around Aster Ct? Or try to divert traffic heading North? Wow, maybe I am a smartass. No sense beating a dead horse though, level heads prevailed and the idea was killed. R.I.P.

Green streets is a great idea, the problem was poor planning on the cities part, Marty’s part and the residents of Gerritsen who were on the board. There were many ways to revise the plan to make it work, but the powers that be chose to let it die. That’s the real shame.

Wasn’t it the residents of our neighborhood that killed the deal?

Actually no, we had brought concerns regarding the narrow areas of the ave specifically near Gotham Ave and how emergency vehicles would pass in the case of an accident and the design engineer had no response. Also, the design engineer’s drawings depicted incorrect measurements and dimensions that were not DOT code compliant in which the DOT engineer agreed with that night. I did ask that we meet again to go over some of the problem areas and concerns we had with the plan but no one got back to us. Looking at the picture it does seem that I was against the project but that is not how it was. I simply went there to discuss with the DOT representative the inconsistencies within the plan, then the next thing new the plan was dead. I still believe that the plan could work with a few changes and I also believe that the community as a hole should review any plan before it goes out the way it did the last time.
Marty Golden if you read this revive Green Streets.

Well, I believe that’s what the Senator’s meeting was for….to determine changes in the plan. I heard alot of screaming from residents and very nasty remarks from some people towards the people on the stage that were there to listen to changes. It looked to me that the rude people took over the meeting and made everyone else be quiet. I know alot of people left the room in disgust on the residents behavior….I know I did. I was very disgusted to see my neighbors act in that manner towards the Senator. There was no respect….Yes the people that were the loudest are responsible for killing the deal….You know who you are…
At least the Senator asked what the nieghborhood wanted.. and the neighborhood said they didn’t want anything….. Did anyone ask if we wanted Seba Avenue Park,,,,No, we just got it…

Did you even read Jim’s message before you criticized him? He said, “Also, the design engineer’s drawings depicted incorrect measurements and dimensions that were not DOT code compliant in which the DOT engineer agreed with that night. I did ask that we meet again to go over some of the problem areas and concerns we had with the plan but no one got back to us.”
People felt disrespected when an incomplete, inconsistent plan was presented. It was as if they expected people to sit there and accept anything that was thrown at them. Why should anyone show respect for people who treated them with none?

Sorry Grandma, I was not one of the screamers, I am in the picture above going over the details with the engineer and pointing out to him that the design he created did not work as they presented it. As I said before, it was not my intention to kill green streets; my intention was to bring to the attention of the engineers that their plan was not accurate and not NY City Code compliant. What ensued after my presentation I do not agree with. You’re right there was no discussion; there were angry people shouting and when that happens nothing gets done, that’s when green streets died. There was plenty of room for discussion and maybe we could have salvaged the meeting and the plan. In my opinion, the meeting itself was poorly handled, poorly scheduled and poorly presented. People were only given a few days to prepare for this huge project that effects all of us. I said it before and I say it again, those drawings and specifications should have been presented to the community long before we had the meeting which was labeled the final review of green streets. Now if that was done, as a community if we all had access to the entire scope of work we could have had a coordinated effort to the issues raised, but that was not done and we all know the result. There was a board representing GB during the scope phase in the early design. Where were they that night? I saw some hiding in the corner then they were gone, because they realized they made a mistake and did not stand up and say so.
My final comment on this is again to Marty Golden, revive green streets and present it to the community the right way, maybe we can still get something done.

Jim,
Green streets is done. The money is gone. It wont come back. Marty isnt exactly in a position of power anymore. It might suck, but golden cant do anything.
Why would he want to help when we shot him down. Maybe it was his staff who should of done a better job.
We would need to find the money else where

Well you never know what can happen if you push the right buttons with the right people. In fact it is not clear if the money is actually gone, I hope to know by next week and I’ll keep you all posted. Marty is not a Senator because he runs from a fight, I believe that that was round one and he will be back.

Maybe you should look at yourself and maybe you should stop pointing fingers and blameing everyone else. I know his staff worked very hard and were shot down too.

No do-overs….GB had their chance. With all the nasty disrespectful remarks made at the meeting we not only lost green streets, we lost the B31 at nite!

I could be wrong but wasn’t part of it to make the sidewalk narrower by 277 to allow for more pick-up/drop off space and a space for buses? Why can’t that still be done? Thats the place everyone complains about the most.

Everyone who didnt want it ruined it for the rest. Increase safety and possibly property values and the overall look of the area…bahh who would want that. It might slow them down from picking up their daily 6pack
