For those of us that take the B31, you may have noticed a new model bus. Specific new york city ordered 854 Daimler Commercial Orion VII Hybrid buses were ordered for operations within New York City, to be delivered through 2010.
I’m not sure how many miles per gallon we get on our “normal” buses which should be around 3.5 MPG (conventional diesel). This new hybrid gets 5.3-5.4 MPG.
This should mean that the B31 will wait for you at kings highway, but we all know that the drivers must get some sort of pleasure leaving us all behind.

oh snap!

It makes alot of sense for the MTA to buy new buses then cut service

Has anyone noticed that even with the new bus, the B31 waits until it’s totally full at Kings Highway, then the driver shuts off and we sit there for 10 solid minutes while the B2 and B100s come and go, with 2 of them for every one b31 bus. This waiting usually happens around 7-7:30pm every night.

The other night, the B31 stopped in the middle of 16th Street to let people on – the train pulled in right as he went to drive away so he waited…some guy who got on (only because of the driver stopping) cursed and complained the entire way home about how “these f-ing guys just love to leave” and how “they do it on purpose.” Umm, the bus driver who he was cursing about stopped to let him on and he’s pissed?! (And no the guy didn’t step in front of the bus to make the driver stop.) So yeah, if I was the driver and the next time I saw the cursing guy it was through my rearview mirror as he ran for the bus, I would definitely get some small pleasure out of it!

My thoughts exactly. Cutting service, yet getting new busses? I thought the MTA was “broke”….

Geez! We’ve reduced our carbon footprint by one city bus and all people can think about is the fact that they can’t get home safe and sound at 2am after working a double shift. What nerve! Thank you, MTA, thank you.

I know that was probably sarcastic but seriously hooray for the environment! Too bad the cuts they are making will have more people in their cars or using car service – thus reducing any environmental impact the new hybrid busses would have on the environment.
