Coney Island is being torn apart. The amusement park Astroland closed in September, and its rides have been moved to storage—except for its 70-foot-long silver rocket ride. The rocket, which debuted in 1962, once took riders on a three-minute mock trip to outer space.
Longtime Astroland owners Carol and Jerry Albert, who sold most of their land to New York-based developer Thor Equities last year, donated the rocket to the nonprofit Coney Island History Project and have offered to contribute toward the estimated $15,000 cost for moving the landmark from the top of a building—money the nonprofit doesn’t have.
People from car-wash owners to museum curators have contacted the Coney Island History Project about the Astroland Moon Rocket, including an amusement park in Pakistan.
The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the Brooklyn Museum, the Brooklyn Children’s Museum, the New York Hall of Science, and Floyd Bennet Field in Brooklyn were all unable to provide a new home for the rocket due to lack of space or logistics.
If the rocket was not moved by Jan. 31, it would of become the property of Thor Equities, which now owns most of Coney Island.

Everybody blames Thor Equities. You should be blaming the Alberts who sold it to them. I don’t believe anyone was holding a gun to their heads. They got $30,000,000 plus what they made throughout the years. Mighty nice of them to CONTRIBUTE towards moving the rocket.

Yes, we can blame Joe Sitt for several reasons. But first get your facts straight. Carol Albert and her husband were not the sole owners of the land, even though Carol took responsibility of the operation of Astroland. The land was owned by a group of people. It is not known exactly who owned it. All it takes is 51% of the people to want to sell the land, and the land is sold, even if Carol objected, she didnt have a choice. You can blame the city. Carol, faced with the prospect of being forced to keep Astroland open 12 months a year, had a proposal to transform Astroland, but the city rejected that proposal. You probably did not know that the land owners of Astroland turned down a higher offer from Sitt the previous year. But faced with the idea that the city might take the land from them, the better offer was from Sitt. But they also thought rezoning might have happened sooner then it was. Since he did not happen, Carol fought long and hard to keep Astroland open till rezoning was done, for her employees. Sitt couldnt care less about peoples enjoyment or jobs lost when he refused to let Astroland operate. He rather keep the land empty, like all his other Coney Island land, and that is a sin, to shut down small businesses to force the city to give him the rezoning he so desperately wants so he can flip the land.

even forget Astroland, Joe Sitt is the worlds worst land owner. Take a walk around Coney Island. All that looks terrible is Joe Sitt.

Ive lived in nearby Manhattan, for ten years now and I take my children to Coney island every year after beach activities.I can honestly say that over the years it is not the same cheery place. I’ve watched the board walks lift in different areas even had one of my children trip on one. Something must be done to this historical place and the people should be thought of not just the money.
