Brighman Street Park and the $250,000 Disappearing Act

Remember Anthony Weiner? We used to be represented “more” by him until his district got remapped to include more of queens,  so  its understandable that we dont see him as much.

When Anthony Weiner was a councilman representing the area, he had allocated at least 250K in capital funds to build a park at Brigham St. No one knows whether that money was spent or not because he was then elected to congress, and then Mike Nelson was the councilman, and then the area was re-redistricted, and then Lew Fidler was the Councilman.

Now the capital funds remain in the treasury unless they are used to for its purpose or some other city Council order re-allocates it. So we’re wondering where the money is. Weiner has offered his help to look for it by asking for a search of it.

  • Council Info

The Brigham Park money, which of course is about 6 million dollars short of actually building the park, was lost years ago. Some of it was transitioned to finish a parks project for Norton Playground and the rest was removed from the budget since it was insufficient to do a parks job. This happened many years ago when Mike Nelson was the area CM.
I hope this information resolves any questions as to the status of this money.

  • Congressman Weiner brought the topic up at the Dec. SB/PB Civic meeting. While definitely worth investigating, I think everyone kind of figured that the money went to benefit another area, but it’s good to have confirmation of that.

Thanks to Councilman Fidler for his diligence in supplying correct information to our Association.

In any event, the Park Project moves forward, creating its Strategic Planning Committee in January. News will be forthcoming soon!
