Our State Senator Marty Golden is in the news a lot recently, he is passing a resolution around the state senate that calls for Senator-elect Hiram Monserrate not to file his oath of office until the charges from his alleged assault on his girlfriend are resolved. While it’s an obvious political maneuver, it also sounds like a good idea.
There is a lot for Marty and state republicans to gain from having Hiram Monserrate not take his seat, there is this whole power struggle going on in the state senate. And democrats desperately need to hold Monserrate’s seat for Malcom Smith to become majority leader. Smith is three votes shy of the 32 he needs to be majority leader. Losing Monserrate would put Smith at 28 votes.
To be honest, I try to follow these local and state politics, it is hard to follow only because there are so many players, but lets say Marty does get this resolution past in the state senate it effects us as a community.
If the Republicans (ie Marty) stay in power, Gerritsen Beach continues to benefit by having Marty bring back resources to the community (well, maybe not “Bay Ridge” money, but more than we would’ve gotten!). Take ‘em for what they’re worth!
Marty did addressed concerns that it was political motivated on the NYDaily News Blog:
“Corruption is not tolerable; bribery is not tolerable,” Golden said. “If you’re guilty and you commit acts of bribery and corruption, you should go to jail. Someone should have put a bill forward then.”
“Those are different crimes. Are they equally bad or worse? Not worse, but bad. This is a physical, violent, B felony. It’s totally different. I’m moving against this because this is an act I believe is intolerable, and sends a signal across the state”
Asked if this is really about the leadership battle in the Senate, Golden replied:
“This is not about leadership. This is not about Malcolm Smith’s spin machine. This is about right and wrong. This is about a woman who got 20 stitches in her face.

I agree with you. Everything’s politically motivated, but Marty was a cop, and probably doesn’t want to be associated with woman-beaters. So what if it’s a political move if he’s also fighting for what he believes in at the same time!

From NY Newsday, on 12/20/08. By ROCCO PARASCANDOLA and MICHAEL FRAZIER
Senator-elect Hiram Monserrate was charged with assaulting his girlfriend after accusing her of cheating, police sources said.
Karla Giraldo, 30, needed 20 stitches to close a gash by her left eye, inflicted when Monserrate broke a drinking glass and struck her in the face, Queens prosecutors said.
The attack took place at about 1 a.m. in Monserrate’s Jackson Heights apartment, according to the Queens district attorney’s office. But surveillance video captures other parts of the drama, according to sources who have seen the video. Giraldo, the sources said, tried in vain to prevent Monserrate, 41, a former city police officer, from throwing her bag down the garbage chute.
Then after the assault, she emerged from the apartment, a towel on her face, and banged on a neighbor’s door for help. But the video shows Monserrate grabbing her by the arm and dragging her outside, where he put his arm around her in an attempt to make it look like they were an affectionate couple, sources said.
At that point, Monserrate could have taken Giraldo to Elmhurst Medical Center, a half-mile away, but instead opted to drive Giraldo to Long Island Jewish Medical Center, more than 12 miles away. Monserrate suffered minor cuts on his hand, officials said.
If this guy Monserrate was a Republican, the media would have had this story front and center in all NYC’s liberal slanted media outlets, and the public outcry would have sealed his fate already. Good for Marty Golden and good for GB.net for bringing this story to it’s readers.

What a crock. Hiram Monserrate, a former cop, may be a complete piece of garbage, but keeping him from office before he is found guilty of a crime is grotesquely unconstitutional. Where were Marty’s principles when Joe Bruno wa accused of steering our tax money to his business friends illegally? When Guy Vellella, Marty’s REpublican colleague was actually INDICTED for stealing our money, Marty was mum. NOW, he tries to say that Monserratte is worse than Velella. Who made HIM Judge and Jury? What this is is a blatantly political move. Don’t attribute a sudden growth of conscience to Marty. He’s a nice guy but he is playing politics with JUSTICE. And that is something a good Republican, a good citizen, a ggood AMERICAN should NEVER do.
