Gerritsen Beach once again lived up to it’s reputation as one of the worst Halloween Mischief neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Although there was a stronger police presence this year than in years past, it was not strong enough to prevent dozens of teens from vandalizing the avenue with eggs and shaving cream.
The mischief started in the old section with older “kids”(17+) gathering at Big Al’s early in the afternoon, which is where they started their egging. The police showed up and took the “I’m your friend approach,” and told them to move on. Which they did, to Victoria’s, but started egging again as soon as the cops pulled away.
Eventually everyone in the area made their way to Victoria’s (Everett and Gerritsen), which quickly turned into a very large group. They egged and threw bottles at any marked car or bus.
The police didn’t respond very well to this group. They pulled up, talked to the kids and pulled away. On top of that, every single time a patrol car would drive by or pull up everyone would run into Ice Cream U Scream and Victoria’s. Since when did Ice Cream U Scream and Victoria’s allow these troubled kids safe harbor? As far as I’m concerned, Ice Cream U Scream and Victoria’s enabled this horrible behavior by allowing them to hide in their stores, and by allowing them to hang out in front of their stores.
![]() |
Eventually a store owner on Gerritsen Avenue confronted the group for hitting a school bus with eggs but found himself retaliated against for doing so, forcing him to close early. One “kid” was taken into custody as a result of the retaliation.
Although there was no SkyWatch watch tower like the 4th of July, the patrol size was decent. It peaked at maybe four marked patrol cars at any given time, and the Captain himself made a few visits. The captain was even walking around back weeds at one point behind the little league field containers. The police stopped kids on the avenue to confiscate shaving cream & eggs, and also searched bags. They also were patrolling Seba Avenue Park often enough for that not to become a problem.

The buses were not shut down during rush hour, which was a big plus for commuters. However, for some reason the buses stopped running later in the night around 10 pm. I’m not sure why the buses were shut down at that time because Gerritsen Avenue was empty from trouble makers and no buses had to be cleaned.

Comment Policy: There will be no “outing” of anyone here, no names.

Looks like the cops did a decent job -however some of the pics clearly prove some of these “kids†are beyond ‘old enough to know better’ – they’re old enough to get hauled away. That dude in the black shirt and the red sweater is lucky he wasn’t flattened.

I have to say that in years past, walking with my oldest child (about 8 years ago) I was scared, and we were the “target” walking from the old section to the new section. This year as I picked my child up from school and walked home, I saw the crowd by pizzaria, and was a little nervous, but no one did anything, they were respectful to people walking on the street, and even while trick or treating, thier was no problem. So, maybe their is a change because I do remember the past around here, and this year seemed to be much milder that the past, where anyone was a target.

who the fuck wrote this piece of shit article? who the fuck do u think your are saying this shit about us? the cops don’t do anything maybe they should grow balls and actually try to solve a problem around here. don’t drag any of the store owners into this shit hole you call a problem. stop saying stuff about gerritsen beach thats not true your just jealous that your not as cool as us. were just trying to have a good time and unlike past years on halloween were not causing any pedestrians harm. cops trying to pull the “I’m your friend approach” get the fuck out of here we don’t wanna be your friends. 4th of july was a fucking joke sky watch did nothing at all besides trigger more “kids” to misbehave. having the captain come to gerritsen beach was a joke. no one cares if he was the captain of the police force or fucking captain crunch it makes no difference to us. the buses being shut down was over dramatic. this year was not nearly as bad as the past years. shutting the buses down was just a way to draw more bad attention to gerritsen beach. in the end the 61st precinct only did a decent job because us “kids” were of the streets. what the they didn’t know was that we were at house parties in the neighborhood instead of wasting our time dealing with cops on the avenue. and by saying “there will be no ‘outing’ of anyone here, no names” you just ruined that by putting up those fucking pictures. seriously don’t you remember what it was like being young?.. ohh wait you probably didn’t have friends when you were younger thats why your writing stuff like this.

If the “kids†had a clue they’d realize that people would leave them alone if they ‘bombed’ EACH OTHER with eggs and shaving cream – across the street on the other side of the Ave -it’ll wash up, we know. Use common sense and don’t go throwing bottles and other stuff that can do serious harm; don’t throw stuff at moving vehicles (whether it’s marked or not). Parents and residents are just worried about SAFTEY but would probably be willing to cut the kids some slack if they showed some common sense and respect for others. That’s why the police end up getting involved – complaints about safety from residents. Make it a point to stop and let people walk by without a problem – make them feel as if they know you’re just having fun and that you’lll make sure they get by without feeling harassed – that’s it. It’s too bad once again they decided to hang out by businesses on the ave to throw stuff at cars and buses (even school buses with young kids).

There was about 10 trillion other things happening this day, at around this time, in and around this area. The shit I’m reading here is more outrageous then the event itself.
The hysteria of this nonsense I think goes hand and hand with Halloween, and I find mildly entertaining….But ALL this pot stirring, divisive, toxic bullshit has got to be put to bed. You people are so much better than this.
If you see a kid throwing a bottle at a car, or acting a way you feel threatens the safety of yourself or someone else —THEN SAY SOMETHING!!!RIGHT THERE!!!. Don’t gasp and run home, fire up your computer, umpteen hours after the fact, and start gossiping and drooling over some other parents shit stain.
How about the big festival that was put together by numerous volunteers yesterday up at Larry Veilingfield?????

This isn’t a Gerritsen Beach problem, this is a city wide if not nationwide issue. I don’t get what thrill people get out of throwing eggs, shaving cream, rocks, etc..
I never felt the urge to do this on Halloween, when I was younger I trick or treated, and as a teenager and adult I love dressing up and going to parties, guess I have better parents and guidance than some unfortunates have. This is still a good neighborhood, look, every place has it’s issues, even the best of neighborhoods but we’re still a strong community that does great things.
The cops can only do so much and I commend them for their vigilance on Friday, what gets me is that they have to babysit a bunch of idiots when they should be able to concentrate on their jobs. I was witness to them being on patrol, following the buses and going after jerks with eggs.
they probably had to do a friendly, politically correct communication with the morons throwing the eggs because then the parents who never taught these creatins correctly would be the first ones out to sue the city and the cops for police brutality, personally, I would love if they had a jail cell for these idiots and let the parents come and get them the next day.
Eggs ruin a car’s finish, so when they throw egss it does ruin someone’s property, if you don’t think so, please give us your address and we will all throw eggs at your house as it doesn’t really damage anything, put your money or house in this case where your mouth is.
Lose/lose situation for the police and I am grateful for them, good job but I realize you are fighting the good fight with little appreciation but realize there are some of us out there that get it. Good job.

oy vey. It is easy for you, you went trick or treating with your kid and gots lots of candy. How about all the people who travel to Manhattan, work all day and then they have to walk home after paying their fare because of this Bull crap. Then they have to be afraid to pass by the egg throwers, because these kids have no respect. By the time they finally get home it is already dark, who the hell can see the Veiling field nevermind partake in the festivities. The kids need to be taught right from wrong by the parents, and egg throwing at people or property is wrong. Let them throw eggs at their house, their car and their parents and lets see how fast an end is put to it. I am not here to gossip or drool so stop judging me.

Oy Vey- I’m not judging you, and am sympathetic to the hard working individuals of this community, such as your self, more than I guess I am coming through. My point was I think all the banter is doing more harm than good.
I wasn’t trick or treating either, that was my wife n child. I was at work as well.

I, personally did not think it was bad this year. I walked pass the kids, checking up on mine, and they were not bothering anyone. I do feel that some parents in the neighborhood do not pay attention what their kids are doing, and thats where the problems begin. That is why there is so much trouble in this neighborhood. I blame the parents, not the kids. If they were taught right from wrong at home, they would know better. People in glass houses should not throw stones. My 5 kids are farrrrrrr from perfect, but they would not mess up others homes or throw things at people or vehicles that could cause an accident. Instead of complaining about the problem, why not come up with a solution for next year? Like a designated egging area , even try to get the kids teachers from the local school, etc to volunteer as targets. Then it will be constructive, and nobodys homes will be bothered. And I am sure other parents would come up with great ideas. And I am sure neighborhood people and storeowners would support it not to have all the mess. Give the kids an outlet, and will not need to be problems.

Solution…..Obey the law…If you think its ok for your kids to egg and make a mess. Do it in your own yard so the mess is contained to your property…..

I would also like to see posts & pics of all the good things that have happened here in the past couple of days – not just ‘Halloween Mischief 2008′. It’s not the only thing representative of the neighborhood around this time of year. Last year you also had some cute photos of the kids trick-or-treating.

I think this website does post a lot of positive pictures and articles. Why does everybody get upset when there is focus on the negative? As I said in a previous post, THESE ARE ALL GERRITSEN BEACH KIDS!!!!! WAKE UP AND TAKE A LOOK AT YOUR BIG BAD KIDS THROWING STUFF AT INNOCENT CARS AND BUSES!!!!! I bet you if it was one of their Mommies or Daddies, they would be pissed. One previous post said people wouldn’t care if they did it to each other, CORRECT!!! Kill yourselves if that is what you want to but, alas, however, you guys get off on picking on other people. Sounds like Physcological issues here!!! One thing I am surprised to see is that the derelict that was posting all the potty mouth stuff at 1:00 am was inside, has a computer, and seemingly is literate. What a surprise. I just have to say that all that big bad stuff that came out of your mouth really scares me. Please refrain from speaking that way again. Probably slept with a blanky and sucked his thumb until 13. Not loved, never hugged, blah blah blah, all that BS.

@BB – There is a ton of positive stuff on the site and i agree with you that people freak out when there is a bit of negative stuff. Oh and yes it would be legal, but im not going to do that.
@ Hazel Court – Im not taking anything down, I think I might be making a difference in the community with this site. I am helping and a thousand people a day agree by coming to this site, who else goes to these local meetings?
@ Turned Angry – Yes the language is not the best, but im not going to take anything down.
@ Joe (Nov 2, 2008 at 1:56 pm) – I’m not embarrassed, I do a ton of positive stuff, Halloween is a big negative thing down here and people need to know about it.
@ Everyone – Relax! It was not insanely bad this year.
Personally, I like the idea of a water cannon. like what was use on people in the sixties during Freedom Marches, to be used on these “kids”.
I wasn’t in the Beach this Halloween, but I’d love to see the 61st, make a few more arrest and more aggressive approach with these “kids”, not this “I”m your friend attitude”.
Unlike most of you cowards, I signed my name.

Stop blaming the kids, stop blaming the police and stop blaming the storeowners who allowed these kids in their stores while the police were patrolling. Unless these children were created in a test tube, they have parents, That’s Right, Parents. It’s the parents responsibility for their children’s behavior. Parents should get off their butts and start behaving like parents and take responsibility for creating a human life.
Many years ago when I worked part-time in a supermarket it was a common practice to remove eggs from the shelves the night before Halloween so the kids couldn’t buy them. Perhaps next year the community board could suggest that to the local food stores along the Avenue.

Did anyone see what the little bastards did Saturday? Many cars were vandalized, trash cans strewn about and large flower pots tossed into the street. I went to church Sunday and was deeply saddened that these kids live in this neighborhood. Do they not see it as their home? Do they not see it as theirs?

In response to the first Anonymous: Joel Garson has done alot of good for this community..ask any parent from PS277..also ask any sports group in the area or ask any organization…He supports them all.. He has a degree in accounting and has had an accounting business for more than 30 years and has thousands of clients… He makes the newspaper to encourage businesses and local people to support each other. Not everyone uses computer, believe it or not. I think he’s a good guy and he got involved with the egg throwers because 16 and 17 year olds were throwing eggs at a school bus filled with children. When he yelled at them to stop…. they threw eggs at him and the store………
I guess you think that was OK. I think he deserves alot more respect than that.

I also think Joel is a good guy……………Remember that time he walked all the way to that volcano to throw in that ring to save the world, man that was cool. Or that time him and Austin Powers saved the world from Docotr E….wait im sorry this is gonna end up bad I know it. Back onto the subject at hand I will be letting it known that next year I will be riding up and down the ave. waiting for some little punk to throw something at my car. When that does happen know that I will retaliate with a super-soaker full of nair and then you can explain to your parents why you all look like eggs now.
Sexton Out!!

The whole Garson/Greenwood clan are all great people. Hey Joel, maybe next year you can be out with you camera and take pics of all the little darlings and post them so the parents can’t say “Not my little darlings” lol!! Then, let their parents clean up after them and pay for any damage done. Its about time parents took responsibility for their kids actions.

I am a kid from Gerritsen Beach & I understand why people complain about the eggs, the shaving cream and everything else. But really we are just having fun on halloween. Don't think oh they throw eggs, that there bad kids. Some are actually really nice kids who are having fun ONE day out of the whole year. & do you really expect kids from 12 to 17 to trick or treat & dress up? If we dress up we feel like barbie dolls that are played with by 3 years old. Honestly people sometimes over exaggerate on halloween.

The teenagers are just trying to have that fun that they can run from the cops. I am not saying the cops aren't hardworking but, on HALLOWEEN it's like they "can't do anything about it". The kids may be bad on Halloween, but if the police want them to stop, the better lay down the law in 2010.
