Cherry Hill Gourmet Market A food market and cafe is going to open in lundys soon, but since the store owners are altering the building’s landmark interior and exterior, the landmarks preservation commission has issued a stop work order.
State Senator Kruger, held a news conference outside Lundy’s on Monday afternoon, saying the store owners were “desecrating†the old building by placing a tile sidewalk out front and removing the old Lundy’s signs, planters and other artifacts.
He said that the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission had issued a stop-work order on construction at the site. John Weiss, the commission’s deputy counsel, said the order was issued last week because no permits had been given for work on the facade or on the sidewalk.
Both Senator Kruger and Theresa Scavo, the chairwoman of Community Board 15, said that Lundy’s should have been rented to another restaurateur.
The owner of the new gourmet market, David Isaev, said he was stunned by all the attention. Furious better described his mood when he arrived at Lundy’s after Senator Kruger’s news conference. He led a high-speed tour in and around the dilapidated building to show the effort he was making to restore it. Craftsmen had taken down the iron letters of Lundy’s sign, and were cleaning them with an iron brush, and there were new floors. Alexander Rabinovich, an architect working with Mr. Isaev, tried to explain the resistance to the food store. “They don’t want change,†he said.

Who cares, bring back the city worker rebel rousers, its too boring now.

Lundy’s is long gone. What is wrong with a tile sidewalk? This business is taking a chance on this neighborhood with all its food stamp russians, give them a break. Lundy’s just could not hack it anymore, we should not honor them, if anything they let us down.

Kruger has to go. Vote him out. The building is dilapidated. Common sense should prevail, but not when Kruger is involved. The man is trying to start a business that will also improve the area. The person who posted at 2:39 hit the nail on the head.

I agree that nothing should be done to alter the outside of the building. I presume the signage and awnings were taken down so that workmen could repair & paint the exterior walls. As far as the sidewalk, I think Senator Kruger is carrying things a bit too far. The tile work on the sidewalk looks great, and I am sure that the dilapidated concrete sidewalk is not protected under the Landmarks Commission status which covers the building. They probably stopped the contractor from finishing the sidewalk only because he did not have the proper building permit at the time of the work. I seriously doubt it had anything to do with being landmarked. It’s not as if the original sidewalk, which has no doubt been replaced many times over the years, was made of any special material other then common cement. Hopefully the signage & awnings will be re-installed soon to preserve the historic look of the building.
