No Violation for Lundys Historic Sign Removal

Recently, Lundy’s removed their outdoor signage which is wrong (as well as a violation) because its protected as a landmark building.

There was a complaint made to the Department of Buildings and they did inspect. The complaint said that exterior was being removed. DOB determined that the “BLDG EXTERIOR NOT BEING REMOVED/RECONSTRUCTED.” So they resolved the complaint with no violation.

Their determination is technically right. However the complaint was wrong. The complaint did not say that the signage was removed.

I guess you can score one for new Lundy’s owner on this one. Even though I would rather see the existing signs up. I still hope they didn’t throw out those old signs.

Does anyone have an old photo that displays the signs that have since been taken down?

Sorry, but the DOB explanation does not hold water. The average citizen should not be expected to know how to exactly fill out a complaint, that is why the DOB is expected to do responsible inspections. But note that the DOB comments say that “interior” work conforms to approved plans with no mention of the exterior.

The DOB isn’t even capable of inspecting cranes. What do you expect?

It is just the old jump in bed with the developers thing that we are all fed up with.

The complaint for the removal of the signage from the building should not have been made to the Building Department in the first place. Complaints about alterations made to landmarked buildings must be made to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, as they are the proper agency who has the authority to rule on such matters. I believe it was mentioned that the Community Board was going to contact them, but there have been no updates on their progress.

Again, the average guy does not know whom to complain to, nor should we. There are too many agencies with overlapping jobs to make that reasonable. With our high taxes and so many workers on the public dole, someone there should refer the complaint to an agency who can do something.
