A Ton of Dirt on a Car
![]() |
Its never a good thing when a ton of dirt is on top of your car.
According to witnesses T&T Industry was hauling away a full dumpster filled with topsoil on Burnett street, when the dumpster emptied onto the street and onto a parked car.
Workers were frantically trying to cleanup the mess with shovels and a bobcat. They were blocking traffic while the bobcat was in the middle of the street which delayed the traffic. However it didn’t look like there was any major damage to the car, but I didn’t stick around, so I could be wrong.
They definitely did not like me taking pictures as one of them asked me to take a picture of something that I would need a microscope to see. Oh! Zing!

Breaking: Stop Work Order at Lundys
![]() |
Cherry Hill Gourmet Market A food market and cafe is going to open in lundys soon, but since the store owners are altering the building’s landmark interior and exterior, the landmarks preservation commission has issued a stop work order.
State Senator Kruger, held a news conference outside Lundy’s on Monday afternoon, saying the store owners were “desecrating” the old building by placing a tile sidewalk out front and removing the old Lundy’s signs, planters and other artifacts.
He said that the New York Landmarks Preservation Commission had issued a stop-work order on construction at the site. John Weiss, the commission’s deputy counsel, said the order was issued last week because no permits had been given for work on the facade or on the sidewalk.
Both Senator Kruger and Theresa Scavo, the chairwoman of Community Board 15, said that Lundy’s should have been rented to another restaurateur.
The owner of the new gourmet market, David Isaev, said he was stunned by all the attention. Furious better described his mood when he arrived at Lundy’s after Senator Kruger’s news conference. He led a high-speed tour in and around the dilapidated building to show the effort he was making to restore it. Craftsmen had taken down the iron letters of Lundy’s sign, and were cleaning them with an iron brush, and there were new floors. Alexander Rabinovich, an architect working with Mr. Isaev, tried to explain the resistance to the food store. “They don’t want change,” he said.

No Violation for Lundys Historic Sign Removal
|
Recently, Lundy’s removed their outdoor signage which is wrong (as well as a violation) because its protected as a landmark building.
There was a complaint made to the Department of Buildings and they did inspect. The complaint said that exterior was being removed. DOB determined that the “BLDG EXTERIOR NOT BEING REMOVED/RECONSTRUCTED.” So they resolved the complaint with no violation.
Their determination is technically right. However the complaint was wrong. The complaint did not say that the signage was removed.
I guess you can score one for new Lundy’s owner on this one. Even though I would rather see the existing signs up. I still hope they didn’t throw out those old signs.

Roll N Roaster Still Keeping Change from Gift Certificates
![]() |
Back last year there was a letter to the editor in the now defunct Brooklyn View newspaper about how Roll n Roaster decided to keep the change from a gift certificate. The person was very upset as you can read here: Roll N Roaster keeps change from gift certificates
It looks as though their illegal policy still has not changed at all and they are berating customers who demand their change. GerritsenBeach.net received an email that explains an incident but its being withheld until they want it published.
Customers who buy these coins from RnR are told they are as good as cash, with no other disclosure.
The FTC has said “Consumers have a right to know when gift cards come with strings attached,” “If fees or restrictions apply, gift card issuers must fully and clearly disclose them.”
I’m not sure why Roll N Roaster uses gift coins, most retailers use gift cards. They use them to disclose the terms in using them.
I’m sure if Roll N Roaster disclosed that no change will be given no one will buy them.

Lundys Landmark Signage Removed
![]() |
Three sets of signs, over the doors and windows, on the Ocean Avenue side of Lundy’s have been removed. Lets hope they didn’t throw them out.
Being a landmark building, nothing can be done without specific permission from the Landmarks Preservation Commision.
The NYC Landmarks Preservation Commision is in charge of overseeing landmark buildings as well as the work done to them, CB 15 Chair Theresa Scavo expects to hear back from officials soon about the work.

Brooklyn Ballgame Raises Thousands for Breast Cancer
![]() |
The Annual Timmy “Tub” Girardot Pagans /Women’s Softball Game is a neighborhood tradition in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn for good reason. The game, now in its fourth year, has raised a total of $15,000 for the American Cancer Society. Each year the proceeds are brought to the Prospect Park Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk by a group of Gerritsen Beach residents registered as Team Hope. Last year’s game raised $8,000, making Team Hope the only non-commercial group on the American Cancer Society’s list of top ten Brooklyn fundraisers. The success is an example of how one small Brooklyn Community can make a difference in the fight against breast cancer.
On Saturday, September 27, 2008 the Gerritsen Beach community will gather at Larry Veiling Field on Gerritsen Avenue to enjoy the game and festivities. The event is free of charge and funds are raised by selling raffles, chances, food and beverages. You can expect to find hotdogs, hamburgers, barbecued chicken and hot or sweet Italian sausages for a suggested donation of $1-2. Local vendors like the Knights of Columbus and the Cort Club donate food and supplies, and everyone takes turns flipping burgers behind the grill.
When breast cancer survivor Jinny LeDonne Hanson mentioned the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk to her softball coach, Ernie Blundell, the idea for a fundraiser was born. The Annual Timmy “Tub” Girardot Pagans/Women’s Softball Game, named in remembrance of a beloved friend, would feature the local men’s team, The Pagans, playing against the Women’s Softball league. Last year’s game drew a huge crowd including representatives from the American Cancer Society and local assemblyman Alan Meisel. This year’s game will be more successful and - if possible - more fun.
Team Hope leader Jinny Hanson was recognized by the American Cancer Society for the fundraising efforts of the Gerritsen Beach community and was awarded a proclamation from the New York City Council in a ceremony at City Hall in 2006.

International Coastal Cleanup
![]() |
This year’s International Coastal Cleanup will be held September 20th. But this is more than a one-day event it’s a year-round movement. The ocean is essential to the health of everything on our planet. But harmful impacts like climate change and overfishing are taking its toll. The International Coastal Cleanup provides a direct tangible way to make a difference. Trash in the ocean kills countless seabirds, marine mammals and sea turtles each year through ingestion and entanglement. The International Coastal Cleanup brings awareness and action to one of the largest problems we face. The 2007 International Coastal Cleanup Data Report is a global snapshot of the hazardous effects of trash in the ocean.
