NY State 8th Worst in Water Quality. Kiddie Beach 2nd Worst in City.

The water quality at New York State’s beaches is getting worse, according to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The number of water samples taken at coastal and Great Lakes beaches that exceeded state standards for bacteria reached 11 percent in 2007, up from 9 percent in 2006. New York ranks eighth worse (out of 30 coastal states ) in terms of the percent of water samples taken at beaches that exceeded health standards. And it seems New York may have snagged the council’s prize for least forthcoming state.

On that measure, at least, the city does better by providing lots of data. And the environmental group’s report applauded the city’s monitoring of its beaches and its method of issuing advisories. But in describing the city’s pollution of its water, the report paints a sickening picture (particularly if you’ve been at the beach recently) of a witch’s brew of stormwater and sewage flowing into the sound and the ocean.

Despite that, the city’s beaches are cleaner than some of those on Long Island or along the Great Lakes.

As in previous years, the private Douglas Manor Beach was the city’s dirtiest by the report’s measure, with 20 percent of its samples exceeding standards. It was followed by Gerritsen/Kiddie where 14 percent of the sample did not meet health standards.

No city beaches ranked among New York’s worst. Fully 44 percent of the samples taken at the foulest beach — Suffolk’s County’s Tanner Park — exceeded state standards for bacteria. Next was Wright Park West in Chautauqua at 38 percent, Ontario Beach in Monroe (37 percent), Venetian Shores in Suffolk (33 percent), and Hamburg Bathing Beach and Woodlawn Beach-Woodlawn Beach State Park in Erie (both at 31 percent).

Kiddie/Gerritsen: threshold levels of 0.2 inch per 2 hours or 0.4 inch per 24 hours (advisory duration is 72 hours).

Whats scares me is the long term effects this could have on our children who swim in this water. The cancer rates are so high in our area…could this have anything to do with it?

anyone dumb enough to swim in that water should be thrown out of court if they try & sue. We live across the water from a sewer plant DO YOU THINK THE WATER IS CLEAN??

It amases me how dumb people can be. the 72 hour rule for swimming aftyer a rain has been in effect for at least 10 years. Did this clue anyone in that the water has problems???

I heard about the 72 hour rule when I first moved here and it stopped me from joining I would think that people who have livef here their whole lives would have figured it out sooner, and from some of the residents I have observed it does appear that the water affect people neurologically

kiddie beach is a staple in gb. what people haven’t learned
yet is if we lost it, it would be like loosing a best friend.
where can you go in your own neighborhood have a great
bite to eat and a very reasonable price have your kids meet
new friends, play and for such a reasonable price? even if you swim or not we need to keep the beach alive. do you
wanna travel in your car on 90 degree day pay tolls, gas when you have a great beach right in your own backyard?
all the beaches have problems. The best is that our beach
is private and fenced in to so that our kids can feel safe.
If we lost this beach hmm….what do you think would replace it???

  • I agree with you and I allow 99% of comments. Especially when things get heated.

When someone with an obvious grudge comes here and floods the site with nasty hate filled comments, im going to remove them.

    • Frank

@GerritsenBeach.net, What does “Negative” mean? I have never read this forum about Kiddie Beach. Is there an issue with the water that we should be concerned about? I would not think that GBPOA would put our children at risk, but if we are #2 in the worst beaches catagory then I think there is concern. Our children are our future, not Kiddie Beach .. Please let us know if there is a problem.

Looks like I have to come up with a commenting policy

    • Beachwalker

@GerritsenBeach.net, Sometimes the people who are making the nasty comments aren’t even from the Beach and although most comments are posted GB.net has not only the right but the obligation to block what is just nasty, divisive, unnecessary, mean and unproductive.

I thought that comments were confidencial, I think that posting someones private information on here is terrible, I think that everyone should think twice before posting a comment up here for now on. I think that it should be removed, I have seen plenty of comments on here that were not called for and never seen information posted. This is a public website and I don’t think that posting information on people is even legal, you should warn people that names will be given if comments are not approved of. Please do not give my name or address or social or anything else out on here because you do not agree.

I posted about this because its news.

What the DOH is testing for and how often they test compared to storm run-off, the results are understandable.

I haven’t been to kiddie beach in over 20 years & I knew about the 72 hour rule without seeing a sign.

Some long time residents don’t beleive there is anything wrong with the water & you know what more power to ya, I personally stopped swimming in that water in the 70′s and beleive that is one reason I’m still healthy

where did it say where someone worked?

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • fyi, the (so called) 72 hour rule refers to the fact that rain water overflow washes down the sewer system, and eventually into the water, it takes a while to (filter) this water out (tides & current), it is good common sense not to swim with the water in this cond, because there is danger of ingesting bacteria (mouth, nose, ears etc), it would be a good idea to test the water on a regular basis (much like a pool test) there are kits available……

@N.F.H., We should then sue the sewer plant? just a thought cause there should be no run off into the canal. This is not only dangerous to our enviornment but way more dangerous to our children! They are so strict with fishing regulations why not with the sewer plant?

Information in this article is VERY wrong.

No beach has ever been closed.

City beaches are much cleaner than they ever have been.

A beach cant be closed for a vague term pollution.

although the water is a concern, so is the beach itself, I have been there on 3 occasions for various ceremonies and each time, I have noticed more than a minimal amount of litter in the sand, cigarette butts and water bottle caos, and I even saw a few crushed cans. I realize that to keep the beach completly clean is a stretch, but I would think that for a ceremony, and this includes openign day at the beach, it would have been spotless for that day anyway.

All the comments made about Kiddie Beach being closed and their #’s being off are not true. Plain and simple. Look them up. There are most defintely signs about the rules up. Maybe you guys don’t know how to read or maybe you are just stupid. Probably a bit of both. I would much rather be swimming in the canal then drowning in the ocean. Why do you people, you know who you are, always have to ruin a good thing. Come on, I’m sure there are more comments you can make. Let’s hear about how bad the GB Games will be, the Labor Day weekend will suck, PS 277 and their parking will suck, the Library will suck….GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!!!! You are probably all the people who are supporting the makers of Prozac. You are such downers. Why don’t you enjoy life? Really really enjoy it. Just sit back and take a breath and say, wow, it’s great to be alive. If you don’t like it hear, don’t like anything about Gerritsen Beach, just shut up and move. Move now. We are sick and tired of listening to all the negativitey. Don’t bother writing be a response, I won’t be answering. Too much negative breaths wasted already.

the signs dont say swim at your own risk

Like or Dislike: Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

    • Frank

@mary, Actually the signs do not say swim at your own risk cause if they did not many people would participate and the beach would lose money..Swimming at your own risk is when there is no lifeguard on duty. Swimming in contaminated water which is possibly polluted and may cause cancer or disease is another thing, Sorry just an educated guess in advertising. We need to be informed of the levels and yes the water should be tested everyday!!

Kiddie beach should get a huge built in pool like the Breezy clubs. The community could have a fund raising day or events to pay for it.
