There is an epic battle being fought “Back Weeds” at the recently paved airplane field. It’s being fought between the Radio Controlled Society of Marine Park (RCSMP) and the legal/illegal street & dirt bikes. The street and dirt bikers have been aggressively riding there on the weekends while RCSMP members are trying to fly.
Even though the RCSMP is no stranger of vandalism, recently the harassment has taken a turn. They are constantly having to fight to fly in their own park that they maintain and pay for. The bikers (not “kids” mind you) have harassed, spit on, damaged cars , threatened violence, and in some cases physically attacked RCSMP members.
Before the skate park, there were barricades in place around the field that blocked street access. Now there is a clear path to the airplane field from the street allowing street bikes. The dirt bikes always get back there but that has always been an issue and is for parks enforcement to handle.
Calls have been also made to NYC Parks (Fred Wilkins) by RCSMP members with NO RESPONSE. Calls have also been made to 911 with little or NO RESPONSE
Anger has peaked with RCSMP members and there is a group of members of the society are ready to turn vigilante THIS WEEKEND, if they don’t see any response from law enforcement.

Nothing will be done until one of these a-holes on bikes get killed and then we will have memorials back there. Why isn’t the parks department doing anything about this? They should get planes that drop bombs and have machine guns like the fighter planes from World War Two.

not for anything i would rather see those bikes on the air strip as long as there were no plane people there instead of flying down the ave because they wont kill themselfs they will kill someone innocent

It’s too bad the area wasn’t under the jurisdiction of Gateway Park.
Then the government would step in. Then again, how effective would they be in resolving this situation..?
I would also put in a complaint to the local congressman or other politicians. Someone has to give a damn.

why not put some of those spike strips out and let them run over those with their bikes, might work. otherwise get them parks department to close up the accessway they are using.

NFH, I’m glad you’re not looking to the 61 pct for help, because they don’t cover backweeds. Do you even live down the beach?

My suggestion would be to call 311 and report destruction of park property.

Stretch some paino wire about throat high across the entrance of your park.. After a few accidents they will be gone.

Better yet just put a spike strip or a cement barrier across the entrance where its only wide enough to walk through…

I am grabbing a twelve pack and some chips and I’m going up to the field to watch a good old fashioned RUMBLE!! This will be about as anti-climactic as West side story.
When your a RCSMP your a RCSMP all the way, from your fist RC flight to your last dying day.

My son gave me a link to this page. I’m a retired NY’er and I’m an active member of an R/C club in central Florida. Our club is at an airport utilizing an inactive runway for our aircraft. We have the full support of the administrators and share the space with a sports car club (once a month). We have it full time the rest of the year. We used to have a motorcycle club on the field but they got out of hand and were given the boot.
It seems to me you guys should document all the contacts you have made with law enforcement (names, badge numbers, titles, etc.), politicians and city agencies with times and dates and who you spoke to. If notheing is done to change the situation, go to the newspapers and show them what your hobby is all about with an invite to the field. Then lay the documentation on them and maybe the newspaper will expose the crap that you are subjected to. Community leaders do not like bad press, it leads to lost elections.

Whether it’s the 61st or 63rd who cares neither one of them .As I understand it It’s a police officers duty whether in there juristication or not If someone is doing something wrong it is their duty to respond to the situation!!!!! Apparently every one wants to pass the buck.parks dept…police…etc.barrier…no barrier…wire…no wire…come on guys Get your heads together and think of a real solution instead of just bitching about it..If they are coming to the spot by trailer or truck why not have police trace form of transport..catch these guys..fine them jail them take away the bikes or something realistic..I’m sure you older guys can get some form of control over these rotten kids.Have a great and safe weekend guys

This sucks. I ride and live in the Beach. I also am into my RC toys. What sucks is these bikers give us all a bad name I was raised right and wouldnt even think of riding the way these guys do, and even if I did I would not ruin someone elses fun. If the RC guys loose there cool I dont blame em. I think theses moto guys nedd to learn respect. Wont happen til they are taught a lesson
PS: Is it me or are most of the problems in our neighborhood caused by outsiders. It makes me sick, cause most of us would not go to some other neighborhood and do this carp..Just sickening

you don’t know what your talking about . our homes are in high demand . But unlike some people . I like living here more then making a buck that i’d have to spend on security somewhere el’s . If you like you can sell your house , move somewhere el’s and prove me wrong.I bet that would teach me to keep my mouth shut .

These guys are not from the area, they are simply using the airplane field to practice, intentionally hurting them is not the answer. I ride my dirtbike back there all the time, we take advantage of the dirt trails, we dont bring or leave garbage behind and we dont spray paint everything in our path, If someone did something to hurt me intentionally I would hunt them down and return the favor, It is up to the Police, Parks Dept. to enforce any applicable laws.

For sure the homes in GB are in high demand. You want to see white trash and poverty, drive 90 miles upstate. GB is like Beverly Hills compared to some areas upstate.

I’m an outsider but I’ve been going to the beach since I was a little kid. I take my dirtbike there once in a while but never do I go on the RCP runway when they are there (OR DO MPH on the Avenue). I actually like to stop and watch them fly the planes. How disrespectful can these people be to do that? It ruins the rep for harmless riders who just want to ride and enjoy their interests just like everyone else does.

Well, when you compare GB to white trash and poverty driving 90 miles upstate, I guess GB would look pretty good next to that.

In all the comments made, I have not heard one mention the fact that most of the vehicles on the grounds do not have license plates and therefore no insurance .As far as the neighborhood children are concerned their parents should be enquireing of their children what they are doing after dark. Anyone can go into that area at any time and find little plastic bags which are used to contain drugs thrown all around. Also the parents who have girls in the area should be extra vigilant because there are many condoms strewn about, leading many to believe that the girls in the neighborhood could be at risk.

I beleive its about time we fight back for our fields to fly in. There are thousands of pilots in NY alone who don’t have a place to fly at . There are fields that have been threatened and not respected because they want to see some dumb baseball, soccer or other type of setup put in there. + the parks dept want to ticket people who fly and wont ticket the violators + not hand out permits or setup a small area to fly in, They just to make money. And these fields have been there for decades and there is plenty of space to fly in for ex “queens” longisland.
We have been flying in these fields since the invention of the model airplane and we will continue to fly for decades to come.
Everyone from every flying field in the boroughs should pitch in and put a stop to this.

first of all ball fields and soccer fields are not dumb there are alot more kids who play ball n soccer then there are kids who fly planes but for you people who do fly the planes u do have the right to have a good time and not be bothered by the nitwits on the dirt bikes and quards two things you can do call the cops which nothing will happen or fly a plane into their head you will be doing all of us a favor

I suppose we should all subscribe to "Survivalist" Magazines, build Bomb Shelters and start purging society of all the undesirables. Yes this is an issue! The little issues ARE the important issues. That's not to say you can ignore large social scenarios, but man you have to live!
All you fools sitting at home glued to FOX and AM770 have to realize you're not being spoken to as a constituency but as consumers! Jesus you get all caught up in whatever the media tells you is important.
