NYPD Guard tower put up on Gerritsen and Gotham avenues in response to the 4th. Maybe everyone should lay low on the fireworks and DWI.
It also sounds like the 61st wants to make arrests, along with confiscating fireworks.
Update: Any stories from the 4th anyone would like to share about the dealing with the 61st?

that’s pretty freaking funny

I believe the authorities have a right, if not an obligation, to monitor some of the things on the internet. If you are not posting anything inappropriate there should not be a problem. In regard to the “Beware” – our local speeders slowed down a great deal and the Avenue was a pleasure. The Beach is known for excessive fireworks which can get very dangerous – don’t mind the boys in blue being around.

Wow, those are the same towers that are in Bed-Stuy, East Flatbush and East NY. GB should be proud to be in that company. What does that say about the people that live in GB?

Ridiculous…. this is not a high crime area, but some of our neighbors think it is…maybe they should move to another area for a while, I lived in another area had my house broken into 1x and almost broken another 2 times … and that was in the 1960′s in a good neighborhood but NOT gerritsen beach I haven’t worried about anything like that in 30 years since I moved here.. maybe these people who complain about our neighborhood need a dose of real life, try living in any other neighborhood in Brooklyn for a while and then see if you should complain

Ha! That’s great.
wow dan… i see how fast you took down your post about banning the city and state official’s IP addresses after someone commented on that you see something wrong with what your posting if you feel the city and state officials should not be viewing the material. I thought this website was for open speech but when someone says something bad about your site i see how fast you remove the posts. Maybe you should think twice next time about what you post about other people, events, and organizations… these people are hard workers and don’t want to be ridiculed just as much as you don’t want to be ridiculed about your site. So if you don’t like when someone says something bad about you or your site dont say anything bad about other people or their doings when they are doing a lot more note worthy things than you. You should be ashamed of your self

Anonymous aka Joe
Actually, I started a sting operation and they all took the bait.
There was a spike of activity from city and state ip’s after i stated that i was going to be banning them. Two city owned ip’s commented, including police @ 1PP and 1 park ranger within a day. I got what information I wanted and I took the comments down.
I wanted this post to discuss the guard tower and not my little operation
No one said anything bad about the site in those comments other than the city employees.
Because I removed the comments I will fill everyone else in. I stated that I was going to be banning all City and State owned IP addresses. For the only reason that they are more trouble than its worth.
These were the comments:
“I guess you see something wrong with what your posting if you feel you should be banning the city and state employees from viewing the material.
Something for you to think about…”
“I believe the authorities have a right, if not an obligation, to monitor some of the things on the internet. If you are not posting anything inappropriate there should not be a problem. “GB.net if you think this site will be better by banning certain IPs, go for it. I wouldn’t however announce it here or make it an open debate. It is your site and you need to run it as you see fit, don’t allow “us” to start dictating to you on how it should or shouldn’t be run. Keep “your” focus, you are doing an excellent job.”
You do know I keep up 99% of comments I guess because of that its considered open speech.
Nobody is doing anything wrong here, that includes the readers and myself. They only people who are “wrong” are the people talking behind closed doors about me and this site. They want to know why I do what I do on this site. They think I have an agenda. They think I am somehow affiliated with elected officials. They are freaked out, even some idiots talking to law enforcement trying to figure out my agenda.
They know I go to these meetings and report back here. Who else does that? Not one of the local papers!
back to the police tower. I hope it’s up for halloween too, since the little darlings of the neighborhood are also quite rambuctious on that holiday too.

Maybe the presence made a difference on the avenue with speeders & fireworks but it didn’t help on the courts. I had officers come down my block 5 times from about midnight until 1:30 am for fireworks & other noise. Blockbusters every 20 minutes or so. The police would walk down my block, they woukd leave & again, “BOOM!”
Last night someone on the next block over started with the loud fireworks at midnight and it went on for hours. Do what you want before 11pm – after that it is just disrespectful.

I don’t get it…..having the information you post here is really like having a newspaper, only on-line, isn’t it? What agenda would there really be other than reporting news and such, only in a more up-to-date manner? Many of us enjoy this site, good, bad or indifferent and I really never figured an agenda behind it all. I just figured you enjoyed doing what you do.

Thank you! but people are paranoid about their faux-power. I do enjoy this website.
Sometimes I check this website and get annoyed that it isn’t updated enough :)
is it true that the gerritsen beach home owner s are responsible for the tower and the high police presence i was told that it was what a disgrace we can calibrate our independence day i felt like a prisoner i seen the cops taking fire works from people putting it in there cars and just leaving it s better then them locking them up but what did they do with the fire works ?

I can understand the need to crackdown on fireworks for safety reasons, but a tower? are you kidding? whats next, mines in the brush to get the kids with their quads? So, you stop some people from lighting them, big deal, the people who are selling them and making them and transporting them have already gotten their monye. Only the lowest level on the chain is suffering as always. Maybe some sector cars in the area might have worked as well. This is just too ridiculous. But what can you expect from a department who pays their rookies 25,000 a year.

we have more crime than you think – people just don’t talk about it. there was a guy arrested for breaking into several house and he was from the new section. Several other robberies can be attributed to him. There are other young people stealing things from neighbors yards. That is besides the quads and racing on the Avenue or the excessive drinking by both children and adults. I also would like to get home from work and wouldn’t mind the tower being on the Avenue on Halloween which is another holiday made undesirable by some of our youth.

I agree that there is plenty of crime in the neighborhood but this just seems excessive. Why not just get some foot or scooter patrols assigned in the area? This just seems too much like Big Brother watching and was this mentioned at the town hall meeting? This sounds like something the residents should have been told of. Were towers put up anywhere else? Or were we singled out?

No this was not mentioned at the Town Hall.
Hey this was the quietest fourth i can ever remeber. It was very pleasant. If the tower had something to do with it than great.

Except the subsequent days following the fourth were not so quiet, at least around my blocks. For Halloween, I definitely agree, not a bad idea to have it around.

having patrols would not work since many residents work for the 61. in the past a neighbor had his party every 4th, fireworks and some of his guests were off duty cops from the 61. how do you call and complain about drinking & fireworks ( accident waiting to happen) when the guys shooting them off are cops?
It seems “big brother” is the only thing that works down the beach.
We had more noise a few weeks ago when a new resident had a party & blasted the music until after 2 AM. try sleeping with a base pounding in your head.
This weekend not only was the firworks practically non existent the cars racing up & down the avenues vanished

what amazes me is that for the past couple of years or maybe even longer the beach has been pretty quiet on the
4th. people it is 4th of july and no matter what their will
always be fireworks. much better improvement over the
last years even when their was no tower!!!!!

Fireworks are fine, at least the rocket that display colors but there is no need for m80, block busters etc. How many seemingly responsible adults see nothing wrong with letting their children shoot off these explosives, many times with no supervision whatsoever. these same people would not hand the kid a loaded gun but an M80 is fine.
Grucci & other professionals hire trained explosive experts to shoot off there display, they dont grab some day worker off the corner & hand them a lighter & say go blow up the fireworks so what makes these backyard firework displays safe? does the guy who normally delivers mail or tend bar or police our streets etc. really have the expertise to be shooting off these rockets, possibly with a few beers under his belt?

The subject of cameras was brought up to the Captain of the 61st Pct. by an elderly resident who attended the town meeting. He was requesting cameras to monitor the dirt bikes & quads. I believe the conversation took place in the back of the room & outside the Cort Club after the safety portion of the meeting was over. At the time, the Captain said that he did not think it was a feasable and appeared to dismiss the idea outright. Go figure.

FYI the tower was mentioned by a Lt. of the 61st Pct. at the GBPOA meeting July 2. They also mentioned that the Mayor was cracking down on fireworks coming into NY so the supplies were down. They made a seizure on E22 and Z which would have blown up the entire block – there is zero tolerence.
Regarding the cameras, the way I understood it. Apparently the camera idea was shot down since they would need someone to go through the videos to locate the info then they would have to get someone to find the people in the picutre. That process would take more manpower than unmarked cars in the neighbor hood or other conventional methods.
We were supposed to get a beat cop in July but he was in an accident and has not returned to work. Hopefully, this will happen soon.

That request for the cameras was addressed in an open forum and was dismissed because even with a camera it would be almost impossible to identify someone wearing a full helmet/face mask and most of the illegal bikes and quads do not have license plates. Do you really want cameras watching everything you do?? Talk about taking away rights and freedom.. ick!

What rights & freedoms are being taken away? Having the camera present is equal to having a Cop walking a beat. If anyone is foolish enough to break the law out in public, it matters not if they are seen by the Officer on the beat or the camera. They still warrant being prosecuted for their crime. Any intrusion on rights or freedoms is moot. If I am out enjoying the park or neighborhood lawfully with my family, I have absolutely nothing to fear. It is only those who are afraid of getting caught breaking the law that need to have worry on their minds, and rightfully so.

Wrong. Im not even going to get into “if you have nothing to fear” Did you know the CCTV dont even really work.
http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23412867-details/Tens+of+thousands+of+CCTV+cameras,+yet+80%25+of+crime+unsolved/article.do
and it would be a ton of money to setup and operate.
That nothing to fear is the reasoning the government gives to moitor its citizens. I amnot breaking the law but still do not want my phone calls monitored or my actions recorded. We still have the right to privacy.
Getting old, memory is slipping but I think the book was called 1984 – BIG BROTHER.

While I agree that monitoring should not be excessive and stifling to the population at large, if you’re walking down a public street, you have no claim to privacy. According to the liberal thinking of some, I guess we should remove all Police Officers off the streets because they might see you walking or talking when you are out and about.

There is a difference between police officers walking a beat and 24 hr camera surveillance. Who gets to decide what is excessive monitoring. For every “right” we willingly give up there can be one that is taken away.
The book was 1984, by George Orwell which was written in 1949 and should be on the suggested summer reading list.
It can be frustrating & infuriating to know who did what and not have proof. Many ex’s have been known to tape phone conversations for divorces. Neighbors have mounted cameras on their property for law suits and while it makes sense it also skates the issue of privacy.
I do beleive the men & women in Irag etc. are fighting for our rights. why should we just give them up willingly?

I am so glad these measures were taken this year to discourage illegal fireworks. Last year was a nightmare. So many fireworks landed on the roof or our home putting us in danger of a fire. We got very little sleep because the irresponsible people lighting fireworks went at it all night. I hope the police makes this a July 4th tradition.

If people would grow up and balance the mix of fun and consideration of their neighbors we wouldn’t need to be watched. An awful lot of people defend GB kids, me too, but I wish more of us would lead by example and show these kids how to act and be considerate.

Those terrorists in Gerritsen Beach must have be very afraid to conduct their attack with all the police presence. Nice to see how tax dollars are spent harassing white middle class people. That precinct is know all over the city for its corruption. it would make more sense to put those towers up outside each cop’s home. That’d be taking a bite out of crime.
