Last night was Marty Golden’s public safety “town hall†style meeting. At this meeting, people were given the chance to discuss public safety issues and had their issues addressed directly by the people in charge; the 61st captain and the 63rd inspector. It wasn’t a large crowd. Around 75 people had signed in for the town hall meeting and judging by the seating arrangement there was a larger crowd expected.
Some interesting concerns were raised at the meeting, but nothing was really new. The issues raised included motorcycles, ATV’s, and quads driving on city streets as well as cars parking at the point, and Jet Ski/Wave Runner launching at the point. Also some Marine Park residents were at the meeting to bring up Stewart Street which is a border street of the 61st and 63rd precincts. They were there to raise concerns of out of control “kids†and the lack of police response.
All of the issues brought up were noted by the 61st and 63rd precincts and their respective community affairs officers. Some sort of action will be taken to address the concerns that were raised. For example, the 61st is stepping up patrols on Knapp Street in response to a motorcycle accident that occurred. They will be shifting patrols to include Gerritsen Beach with the main focus as Knapp Street.
In addition, the 61st would like people to anonymously report names and home addresses that have illegal ATV, Quads etc so they can have the vehicles confiscated if they see them on the street.
There were also representatives from the parks department explaining the Mau-Mau/White Island project, but I’m going to post that separately either today or tomorrow, so stay tuned.
Here are some questions for all reading this: Was anyone planning on attending? If you didn’t make it to the town hall why couldn’t you attend? And for the people who didn’t think of attending, do you not care?
If you can bear it the video is below: Just beware it is insanely long, boring and the audio at times is horrible. Funny thing is you will feel like you were there!

I personally planned on attending but had no sitter.
Thanks for always being there, Net and from what I know, reporting back pretty accurately. Hard to argue with what actually occurred especially with video that you’ve taken at previous meetings.

You cant, its not a proper launch site.
Coast Guard and NYPD Harbor have notified and I supposed they will be coming around more than they would of all summer.
and the 61st will be coming around to check for trailers by the point launching boats.
and since this only really happens on the weekends, it will be really easy to concentrate patrols for two days during the day for the summer months.
In all honesty, I didnt even know about this meeting. How was it announced? were people notified by mail?.I think things of this importance should be more widely publicized. or did the senator not want a big turnout for fear of more problems?

I got a piece of mail :)
Why not try to get the city to build a ramp to launch the jet skis, and boats, and charge a fee. that is what they do in my area, and the monies collected go towards maintainance and upkeep of the launch area….

Its illegal to ride an ATV or dirtbike within the city limits. It doesn’t matter if they are registered or not, so don’t get caught.

I would have loved to have come to this meeting,in fact I would love to attend all of the community meetings, but I work nights and they are always held on weeknights. I am sure that I am not the only person in G.B with this dilemma considering many of us are city workers in the city that never sleeps.I very much appreciate this website to at least be able to see and hear what I missed.
