Short Answer: Never
Long Answer: Unless you live on a block with 3-5 houses it’s not your spot. Even then it’s not your spot. If someone is parked there park elsewhere. It might be annoying if you cant park 5 feet from your house or gate, get over it and walk.
This happens in both sections so this applies to everyone. People are leaving harshly written notes on others cars not to park in “their spot”. People will honk if a car is in “their spot”. Its complete crap and crazy. People who leave notes are like Mr. Wilson from Dennis the menace, a crotchety old man
DON’T BICKER with your neighbors about whose spot is whose. For instance, recently a family moved in on my block, they have two cars which threw off the daily parking scheme. People were leaving notes on their cars not to park where they were parking. No matter where they parked they received notes.
Does that make that family welcome? Don’t they have a right to park wherever? Even if it was just a single man or woman doesn’t he have the same right?
So, park wherever you want.

I completely agree with you, no one owns the spot in front of your house, you don’t even own the sidewalk but still have to maintain it. My brother who’s a former police officer actually was threatened by his neighbor for parking in “his” spot, until my brother warned him that might not be a good idea considering it’s against the law and my brother was a cop. Put the end to that bully but how many times must that have worked?
Having said that we have to be considerate of our neighbors, if parking is at a premium you don’t need to hog parking spots, some people have four cars which isn’t fair to the other neighbors? I actually had a neighbor who had three cars parked on the block and only one car ran. Come on! But I never told him he couldn’t park there, as pissed off as I was he had a right to the spot, but all I am saying be reasonable.

I agree no one own’s a spot, unless of course is your
“DRIVE WAY”. Funny some people have them, they just don’t use them. They should try!!! Because that’s there spot!!!!
Other wise if it’s there and it’s open “IT’S Mine”

Actually 3 cars that don’t move can not stay in a spot indefinately. Those cars should have been moved. Most people down here consider there driveways the playground for the children (see comments about danza’s development). The one time it would be CONSIDERATE not to park in a spot is when someone cleaned out the snow from that spot (that could get you injured & justifiably)

Agree – I live between Gerritsen & Lois & everyone is pretty considerate because we don’t have a lot of people parking here who don’t live here. All my guests park on Lois Avenue (taking up other people’s spots I’m sure).
My problem is people who park in front of my house & block my driveway. It’s hard enough getting in & out of a driveway in the old section without someone being parked too far forward or back – at least pull all the way in to the spot!

Your right we don’t own the spot but some courtsey would be nice. When I moved onto my block I met and discussed the parking with my neighbors and we worked out the parking. I am on a court off of a court so parking is limited and I get upset when I find a car sticking 3 feet out from the so called curb or blocking my entrance gate so I cannot enter or leave. Don’t be arrogant and state you will just take the spot and not be considerate of a neighbor or to the people that live there. Bickering does not come from a parking spot it…no consideration starts bickering and feuds. (For the guy who posted the second comment)

My neighbors driveway is never blocked there is friction on the block so visitors are over considerate not to block. they don’t check to see they have a good foot from the driveway so they park to far back & if I have someone behind me, I’m blocked in that way. Its disconcerting as I’ve had a car Hit by my sister pulling out from behind me without backing up a little & clipping my car SO I wish people could give a little space between cars.
Doesn’t pay to have a nice car if it has all these dings from having cars parked in front or behind.

growing up in gb its really not about “your spot” i always
felt it as a respect for your neighbor. nobody owns the
street but giving a courtesy to your neighbor especially
if they are elderly was in my opinion the right thing to do
also if my neighbor was having company and they were
parked where i always park my car i just park somewhere
else and when they leave i pull my car back to where i normally park it. Remember years ago that if a family had
one car you were doing good. Parking is becoming a big problem due to the fact that many families today have 3-4 cars.

Agreed above. Its just being considerate of one other. Its no big deal to me if I don’t have a ‘spot’ once in a while. Most of the time there is one, so for the minor inconvenience of no parking spot once in a while, big deal, I park on one of the avenues and walk. God gave me two legs to use. I do know things get pretty hairy over parking situations though.

How bout the house at **** dare, this guy always had “his” front of house spot, but now he has a metal handicapped parking sign holding his spot! Its one thing to have the handicap sign and plates but c’mon, you can drive but you can’t walk up 1 car spot? It is very inconsiderate to all the neighbors.

with so many things going on in the world we are worried
about a parking “spot” . Lucky we are not
drowning in water like the midwest who can’ t even find
there house or car or even a “spot ” where they wish they
could park it. consider yourselfs lucky to even have a “spot” no matter where it is.

Sorry GB.net, maybe you can get a pic of it without his address? It is a sight for sure.
It isn’t legit, I just hope it doesn’t start to become a new thing around here. The handicapped permits and plates are great for the handicapped (and some not so handicapped) but this is borderline arrogant.

Agreed … it is not your spot. I only wish that the families with more than one car would be more considerate. If you own 2 or more cars (some families have 4 cars all parked in front of their houses,) please consider parking one of them off the block. Most times I don’t mind parking off the block when it happens (rarely). I just think about friends who live in downtown Brooklyn and Bay Ridge who circle and circle hoping for a spot within a 5 block radius. Oh and I love the “driveway” thing. If you have a driveway (especially if it is on the parking side of the street,) you should park in it, not put your patio set or your kids’ toys in it.

There is no winning here….if you move your car around the block your friend over there cares, if you leave your car too long on your own block your next door buddy comments. the best bet is don’t be rude & park in one spot all week. these are public streets & it is 1st come 1st served. There is NO RESERVED PARKING on NYC streets. I don’t care how long you or your father hogged this space, if it is in the street, it is fair game. Drop the bully mentality & realize this is 2008.

June 27 8:55am…Still showing your an arrogant ass with the YELLING. Read my post again… I don’t own the street I just know how to be considerate. If you talk with your neighbors and work out a parking scheme (a practice in the area for 40 + years) there wont be any problems and eveyone will be able to park. Consideration should be given to the residents of the block especially if parking is limited, this is common sense…the “ME” mentality is what is killing a great neighborhood.

Park in front of your house and be courtious, two weeks ago a guest of my neighbor parked in my spot which forced me to park on Lois ave, My care was broken into and I lost a couple thousand $$ in property, since then I refuse to park anywhere other than in front of my own house where I have been for the past 2 years.

Hey,
isnt there a (mandatory) 5 year waiting list for your spot?, at least thats the way it was when i lived on lois avenue, and yes people used to block my driveway all the time…

Although I like to park in front of my house, it is not always gonna happen, I am only here a few years but my neighbors and I are pretty respectful of each other, but of course druing the holidays and when someone is having a party, things arent gonna be perfect. I lived in bay ridge and park slope prior and if you think parking in front of your house is nice, try just being happy to park within 10 blocks of your house. So why dont we worry about more important things than parking spaces

June 27th 9:27 am You are an ass theres no doubt about it.
Ya I live on Brigham St. you try talking to everybody on the block. No one on my block really cares if you talk to them about a spot. There NOT going to leave it open for you because you say it’s yours. Parking is very hard on my block ok. And if a spot is open well pretty much your lucky if you can get it befor some one else does. If it works on your small block well that’s great for you! Don’t talk for anybody else.
I might have yelled to express a point because you can’t read correctley. But look who’s calling people names. Conversation over. Because obv there’s no talking to somebody like you.

The only parking spot that you own is in your own driveway. What I find inconsiderate is people who take up two spaces at a time. sometimes it is hard to judge when you are in the car. Many times I’ve got out of the car and seen that if I move up or back a little another car could fit. So out of courtesy for the next person I get back in the car and move .It only takes a few seconds.
