Mau Mau Island is Killing Hundreds of Horseshoe Crabs

Mau Mau/White Island is surrounded by hundred if not thousands of black sand bags which are holding the entire island together. Most of these bags are completely worn out from weather, tides and time. Over the last few years, these bags have been killing horseshoe crabs. You can see from the pictures (above and below) that the crabs are coming up to the shore line and getting tangled in the fibers of the broken bags. Killing them
With all of the recent talk of horseshoe crab poaching and Park Police stepping up enforcement in the area to catch poachers, it seems ironic that the Horseshoe Crabs are dying on Parks property.

When I was growing up in the beach the kids killed hundreds every summer. I am sure some of them regret it. They used to blow them up with ash cans and cherry bombs too. It was terrible.

Well maybe the’ll do something about this now that it has been brought to the public’s attention. Esp since they made such a big what to do about Mau Mau Island and that dame bird. Now they have something else to prserve.

I check out this site every week. It has interesting information, news, comments, and gives people the chance to express concerns. I have noticed for some time that many of the people use it to slam kids or each other. Many times the information submitted in the comments are incorrect or misleading. Although most of the time it is not intentional, it is just from people that are not actively involved in the volunteer efforts in GB. GB is run by hundreds of people that volunteer time to run programs, events, and organizations. They contribute thousands of hours. Most do it because they care… and others because they have some type of interest that makes them care. Maybe a business or a child that gets involved with a sports program and the parent steps up to coach.
Please remember we live in the best community around with thousands of people that care in one way or another. We have our Trash and so does every other community. Let’s make sure this PUBLIC site does not make all the kids or the entire community look bad.
I know for many it will be hard not to TRASH each other. Give it a try and get involved and show you really care.

maybe people should worry more about the rumors of what there doing to mau, mau island and what that work is going to do to the water and air and how it’s going to affect the space for water fun and how crowded and dangerous it’s going to be when you want to take your boat or jet ski for a ride and you can’t go around mau mau or dock you boat on the beach and just relax and everyone is going to be stuck right in the front of mau mau with nowhere to go….has anyone thought about that i think the dying horsecrabs are the least of the problems to come….can’t blame everything on the gb kids….this one has nothing to do with them…blame the city and parks dept for taking something else from us….are people in gerritsen beach willing to fight for mau, mau island?

It has come to my attention that the city has decided to bulldoze MAU MAU Island (White Island).I live in Gerritsen Beach and fish around MAU MAU Island all the time. This is a tragedy this island is home to osprey, owls, racoons, opossoms, rabbits, muskrats, turtles,and geese that is just to name a few.I have personally drited behind the island and watched osprey swoop out of the sky grab a fish and perch on the island to eat it.Also to deny the public access around the island to fish, jet ski, water ski, or even a boating is absurd. This will not only stir up old sediment, it will also pollute the water for people (KIDDIE BEACH.)In addition, many different fish and crabs live and breed around this island dredging will destroy thier habitat as well. The island also use to be a garbage dump site now that it has vegatation on it and has settled all these years, why would you unearth it in to the air? By keeping the island the way it is people use the shore line to hang out with boats and jet skis never going into the thick vegatation so by the island looking so wild it protects all the wildlife on it. I also would like to say none of the people on thier water crafts are disrupting any habitat. In the summer it screams with life but even in the winter if your there its great also, this past March there was a seal there I saw it . WHO DO WE CONTACT TO STOP THIS I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE BULLDOZERS HAVE ALREADY STARTED PLEASE LET ME KNOW?

Interesting that you thought my whole 4 lines about other negative comments was whining, while your own comment was doing the same. As for a solution to the horseshoe crab problem?? I care more about that Island staying in one piece than I do about a few sandbags killing crabs. I’ve been to all the community and civic meetings and I voice my opinion and concerns there. I don’t however come to posting boards to talk shit about things I know nothing about.

I am reading posts on all subjects on this site because fortunately it is a place to find out important things going on in our neighborhood. It just made me really sad to see how much hatred there is among neighbors in
Gerritsen Beach and how much the kids are put down and talked about like they are just alot of trash. I resent that since I have lived here for 30 years and always found most of the neighbors helpful, friendly and basically good hard working people. I have an 18 year old who does NOT hang out on the avenue, does NOT destroy property or mess up our neighborhood because I WOULD
Break his a– if he did. . When he is out he is either at the movies, skating (ice) , playing some sport or at one of his friends house ( not in the beach). I see this also with other kids on my block and believe that there is a bunch of kids that do hang out in the beach and do the things that everyone complains about but I think it is only a small number of the large amount of kids in this neighborhood, so Please when you talk about GB kids talk about the ones who hang out on the Avenue . DON’T INCLUDE ALL THE KIDS IN GERRITSEN BEACH.

Instead of complaining about the kids misbehaving and hanging out on the streets causing trouble, why don’t some of you wonderful, upstanding adults (that spend there time bad mouthing and arguing here) put some time and effort in to organizing youth groups and activities to keep the kids occupied.

I agree with you wholeheartedly. Growing up here and now living here and raising my kids here by choice, I resent being lumped in with those that give GB a bad name because we all aren’t like that. I came from a hard working family and I certainly wasn’t that way as a kid and I forbid my kids to be that way either. I’d open a can of whoop ass if I ever found out my kid was doing half the things talked about on here.
